Participants geared up for Durban and Coast SPCA Kennel Sleepover

DURBAN residents Claudette Lingenfelder and Robyn Meloni are among those who will brave the night at the Durban & Coast SPCA Kennel Sleepover on Saturday, August 16, and are looking for sponsors to support their fundraising efforts. 'Yip, I'm back for my favourite, fluffiest fundraiser,' said Meloni, who will spend Saturday night at the Springfield Park premises for the third time. She said, 'For one night, I'll be swapping my cosy bed for a kennel – all in the name of raising funds for the animals in care at the SPCA Durban & Coast. You can get involved too. 'Adopt' me for the night and help me reach my target of R10 000, although I'm going to aim to match or surpass my 2024 amount of R15 000.' Lingenfelder is looking to raise a minimum of R3500 by 'spending 24 hours in a cage at the SPCA'. The passionate animal lover said, 'I'm doing this to understand a small part of what they go through. Hundreds of animals are abandoned or surrendered to shelters on a daily basis. They go from loving, warm homes to being put in a cages – and in some instances put down. 'Please help by supporting this initiative to raise funds. Every rand counts and your donation goes directly to the SPCA to help re-home these animals, cover veterinary bills (as some animals surrendered come through in terrible condition), food, shelter and rescuing animals from dangerous and neglectful situations. Help me turn one night of discomfort into a lifetime of comfort for them.' First time sleepover guest is Durban & Coast SPCA spokesperson, Tanya Fleischer. 'I organise it every year and I like to give back in some way. I love animals and the SPCA and earlier this year I raised funds at the 10km ABSA Run Your City event in Durban. When you think that our SPCA sees more than 13 000 homeless animals through our doors each year, some abandoned, some unwanted, some living on the streets and collected, some abused, hungry, cold, frightened, this is what makes nights like this so important,' she said. NPOs race against time in trolley dash [Pics]

GIVING back never looked so fun, as a trolley dash like no other whizzed its way through Arbour Crossing on June 6. The initiative, hosted by Arbour Crossing Retail Centre, in partnership with Pick n Pay Hypermarket, aimed to support NPOs while also raising awareness for the selfless work each of them do. Also read: Fairytale doors open world of reading for learners [Pics] The NPOs manning the trolleys included Seed of Hope, Amanzimtoti SPCA and the Jona Vaughan Home. The trolley dash, which has become an exciting staple of Arbour Crossing's corporate social investment initiatives, blends fast-paced fun with goodwill and charity. Each representative of the three NPOs had a partner in order to split the responsibilities evenly to cover as much ground of the store as possible, filling their trolleys with items from their respective needs lists. General manager of Arbour Crossing Retail Centre, Kurt Hoggan, put his trolley skills to the test alongside Seed of Hope's Wandile Nxumalo. The SUN's sales manager, Shereen Maharaj, joined Lanthis Lombard to fill trolleys for the Jona Vaughan Home. Lastly, Michelle Hannan, of Amanzimtoti SPCA, was joined by Styles Mbatha, of East Coast Radio. 'We are incredibly proud to support such organisations, all of which do remarkable work in our community. Hosting this event is our way of giving back to a community that continuously supports us. These NPOs touch lives in meaningful ways and we are honoured to stand alongside them in their efforts. Together, we can make a real difference,' said Hoggan. And what a difference they made, as Arbour Crossing sponsored R3500 for each trolley, while Pick n Pay sponsored an additional R1500. Boy runs away to join initiation school, family unsuccessful in securing his return

The family was met with a list of items demanded by the initiation school in order to either release or house the teenager. A family spent the weekend negotiating with traditional leaders for the release of a young boy from an initiation school. The 17-year-old fled his home near Kwamhlanga in Mpumalanga at roughly 5pm on Friday evening, admitting himself without consent, placing the family at the mercy of the school. Negotiations have since resolved tensions between the parties, with the boy being allowed to stay at the initiation school. Initiation school's demands After learning that the teenager — a Grade 10 pupil — had enrolled in the school, the family's attempts to bring him back were met with a demand for R1 000, citing an alleged breach of initiation school protocol The police visited the initiation school, but the rogue initiate hid from authorities, fearing he would be forced to return home. A representative of the initiation school spoke to The Citizen on Monday and clarified that the family went on to sign a consent form after an early round of negotiations. The boy's father is currently unavailable to resolve the matter due to work commitments in Johannesburg, leaving negotiations to the rogue initiate's older brother. The initiate's older brother argued that the initiate had not undergone a medical or other necessary tests required before admission. As negotiations evolved, the initiation school demanded 50kg of maize meal, two blankets, toiletries, Umqombothi ingredients, and R3500 for the entire initiation process. On Sunday, initiate's brother was granted an audience with the area's chiefs, where he presented some items on the list of demands. The family was then issued with a receipt, which The Citizen has seen, stating that, in addition, R3500 and 25kg of maize were still outstanding. 'Cultural implications' The initiate's brother was unable to elaborate on his brother's intentions, guessing that it may be due to peer pressure or personal conviction. He explained to The Citizen the several concerns the family had, namely the physical safety of the boy, the costs incurred and the traditional repercussions.' 'The family doesn't traditionally practice initiation ceremonies, being Xhosa, and his participation might have cultural implications for his future life,' said the initiate's brother 'It's alarming that some initiation schools are accepting them without involving their families. I think it's crucial to focus on the potential risks and consequences of such actions, including physical harm, emotional trauma, and cultural conflicts. 'We need to ensure that these young boys are protected and that their rights are respected. Initiation schools should prioritise the boys' safety and involve their families in the decision-making process,' he explained. Initiation costs The 17-year-old is likely to be away from home for roughly two months to complete the initiation, after which the family could incur more costs. 'The reasons the family has to pay the things mentioned are because, as he is there at the initiation school, there is no coming back without finishing the process,' said John. 'They likely feel these demands are necessary for the traditional initiation process and expect the family to cover these costs as part of the initiation ritual,' he added. The initiation school's representative stressed that the school was registered with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and operated within the Customary Initiation Act. Safety at initiation schools has been on Cogta's agenda this year, with Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa launching an initiative to improve oversight at initiation schools. 'As Cogta, we stand firm in our resolve to work alongside traditional leaders to preserve our heritage while safeguarding the lives of initiates. Our shared goal is clear — zero deaths in the upcoming winter initiation season,' Hlabisa said in February. Overpriced? Springboks vs Barbarians ticket prices angers fans

The Springboks' first match of the year against the Barbarians- or BaaBaas- at Cape Town's DHL Stadium has been marred by criticism from rugby fans over its 'exorbitant' ticket prices. The South African and British-based invitational rugby unions will face off on Saturday, 28 June. Tickets cost between R250 and R3500. The Boks will play other countries in 2025, including test matches against Italy, Georgia, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Ireland, and Wales. On social media, South African rugby fans have shared their dissatisfaction at having to fork out a small fortune to watch the Springboks play the Barbarians next month. The tickets are being sold via Ticketmaster. The cheapest seat costs R250, and the most expensive is priced at over R3 000. However, the limited low-cost tickets – allocated by an electronic system – were sold out before tickets officially opened on Tuesday, 6 May. This was due to the Stormers – whose home stadium is the DHL Stadium – giving their season ticket holders early access a week earlier. TikToker @nazeer_hoosen said in a video clip: 'I'm sorry for whoever set these prices. And it's a friendly match, not even a normal test match. If it wasn't in Cape Town, these prices wouldn't be it. It would be much lower. @nazeer_hoosen I wonder if it will be sold out with these prices 😳 #springboksrugby #springboks #sarugby #rugbyunion ♬ original sound – Nazeer Hoosen In the comments section, others agreed. 'We can't afford to see our own national team.' 'Stronger together, but middle-class citizens can't afford a decent ticket'. 'DHL Stadium is never bearing the greedy allegations.' 'Rugby is a sport for VIP people and landowners!' 'Springboks pretend to stand for unity and doing it for South Africa, but profits are all that matter to them. The prices are ridiculous and they know we cannot afford those tickets'. It's not the first time Springbok fans have complained about the price of test match tickets at the DHL Stadium. But why are they so expensive? According to stadium management, this is because of the venues… Modern, world-class features Limited availability and high demand Cape Town is being hailed as a top tourist destination Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
