Barcelona star to miss Espanyol clash after undergoing emergency surgery
A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona will play no part in the club's upcoming showdown with Espanyol. That's according to RAC1, amongst others, who point towards Ferran Torres as the player in question. Frontman Ferran had been widely tipped to maintain his place as Barcelona's attacking spearhead tomorrow night, when the Blaugrana lock horns with the aforementioned Espanyol in the latest edition of the Derbi Barceloní. This, however, will not be the case. As confirmed by RAC1, the Spanish international was on Wednesday called in for emergency surgery, owing to a case of appendicitis. Ferran will play no part on Thursday as a result. Robert Lewandowski, continuing to ramp up his fitness levels following a spell on the sidelines with a muscular injury, is the leading candidate to replace the former Manchester City man in Hansi Flick's frontline for the derby. ‼️ Explicat a @EsportsRAC1 🎙️ Marta Ramon👉🏻 Ferran Torres, operat d'urgència per una apendicitis👉🏻 Baixa d'última hora per al derbi👉🏻 Ho ha avançat @culemanias i ho hem confirmat a @rac1 #frac1 — El Barça juga a RAC1 (@FCBRAC1) May 14, 2025 Conor Laird – GSFN

Toxic cloud sparks lockdown for 160,000 in Spain's Catalonia
A couple, wearing face masks, walks near of a fire at a swimming pool cleaning products company, which caused a toxic cloud of chlorine, in Vilanova i la Geltru, south-west of Barcelona, Spain May 10, 2025. PHOTO:REUTERS Listen to article Authorities in north-eastern Spain in Catalonia, lifted a shelter-in-place order on Saturday after a fire at an industrial warehouse released a toxic cloud of chlorine gas, forcing around 160,000 residents to remain indoors for several hours. The blaze began at approximately 2:20am local time (0020 GMT) at a facility storing swimming pool cleaning chemicals in the coastal town of Vilanova i la Geltrú, roughly 48 kilometres (30 miles) south of Barcelona. The resulting plume of chlorine prompted regional emergency services to advise residents in five nearby towns to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid outdoor activity. Civil Protection issued alerts via mobile phones and social media, urging people to remain at home. Train services through the area were suspended, roads closed, and public events cancelled as a precaution. By early afternoon, Catalonia's interior minister, Núria Parlon, announced that the lockdown was being lifted. However, she cautioned that children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions should stay indoors until further notice, and advised against outdoor exercise. 'There are no casualties,' the Catalan fire service reported, while confirming that a large deployment of emergency crews had successfully brought the fire under control. The fire service added that teams continued to monitor air quality, tracking wind shifts and toxic gas levels in case renewed confinement was necessary. The warehouse owner, Jorge Viñuales Alonso, said the blaze may have been caused by a lithium battery. 'It's very difficult for chlorine to ignite, but once it does, it is extremely hard to put out,' he told local broadcaster RAC1. Emergency services remain on standby in case conditions worsen.

Spanish court overturns football player Dani Alves' rape conviction on appeal
ADVERTISEMENT Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves has won his appeal against a sexual assault conviction as a Spanish court overturned the ruling in a case that lasted more than three years and saw the former Barcelona defender spend 14 months in jail. Alves was found guilty in February 2024 of raping a woman in a nightclub in December 2022 and sentenced to four years, six months in prison. Alves denied wrongdoing during the three-day trial. That court ruled that there was 'insufficient evidence' to rule out Alves' presumption of innocence. 'Dani Alves is innocent and that has been proven,' his defence lawyer Inés Guardiola told Catalan radio RAC1. 'Justice has finally been served.' The Alves trial was the first high-profile case since Spain overhauled its laws in 2022 to make consent central to defining a sex crime in response to an upswell of protests after a gang-rape case during the San Fermin bull-running festival in Pamplona in 2016. Brazilian football player Dani Alves leaves Brians 2 penitentiary in Sant Esteve Sesrovires near Barcelona, 25 March, 2024 AP Photo The legislation popularly known as the 'only yes means yes' law defines consent as an explicit expression of a person's will, making it clear that silence or passivity do not equal consent. But the four judges of a Barcelona-based appeals court ruled unanimously to overturn the conviction after reviewing the evidence and testimonies given to the lower court. In their ruling, they wrote that the testimony of the plaintiff 'differed notably' from evidence of video footage taken before the woman and Alves entered the bathroom where she said he forced her to have sex without her consent. Alves, now 41, was kept in jail from January 2023 until March 2024 until he was released after paying €1 million for bail while awaiting his appeal. He also handed over his passports, with prosecutors having argued against releasing him on bail because of a possible flight risk. Prosecutors wanted his prison sentence increased to nine years while the victim's lawyer wanted him to stay behind bars for 12 years. This decision could be appealed to the Spanish supreme court in Madrid.

Spanish court overturns soccer player Dani Alves' rape conviction on appeal
Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves won his appeal against a sexual assault conviction as a Spanish court overturned the ruling Friday in a case that lasted more than three years and saw the former Barcelona defender spend 14 months in jail. Alves was found guilty in February 2024 of raping a woman in a nightclub in December 2022 and sentenced to four years, six months in prison. Alves denied wrongdoing during the three-day trial. That court ruled Friday that there was 'insufficient evidence' to rule out Alves' presumption of innocence. 'Dani Alves is innocent, and that has been proven,' his defense lawyer Inés Guardiola told Catalan radio RAC1. ' Justice has finally been served.' The plaintiff's lawyer did not immediately respond to The Associated Press when emailed and messaged asking for comment. The Alves trial was the first high-profile case since Spain overhauled its laws in 2022 to make consent central to defining a sex crime in response to an upswell of protests after a gang-rape case during the San Fermin bull-running festival in Pamplona in 2016. The legislation popularly known as the 'only yes means yes' law defines consent as an explicit expression of a person's will, making it clear that silence or passivity do not equal consent. Different versions Before last year's trial, the alleged victim told state prosecutors that she had danced with Alves at the nightclub and willingly entered the bathroom, but that later when she wanted to leave he would not let her. She said he slapped her, insulted her and forced her to have sex against her will. Alves denied those accusations at the three-day trial. 'She never told me to stop. We were both enjoying ourselves,' Alves said, while repeating that the woman never asked to leave or made any indication that she did not want to have sex with him. He also denied having slapped or insulted her. Already out on bail Alves, now 41, was kept in jail from Jan. 20, 2023 until March 2024 until he was released after paying 1 million euros (then $1.2 million) for bail while awaiting his appeal. Alves' playing career Alves was one of the most successful players of his generation and won dozens of titles with elite clubs including Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. He also helped Brazil win two Copa Americas and an Olympic gold medal at age 38. He played at his third World Cup, the only major title he hasn't won, in 2022. He played for Barcelona from 2008-16, helping the team win three Champions Leagues and six Spanish leagues, and briefly rejoined the club in 2022. He still has a residence near the city. He was with Mexican club Pumas when he was arrested. Pumas terminated his contract immediately. ___

Dani Alves acquitted of rape
Dani Alves, the former Barcelona and Brazil defender, has won his appeal against a sexual assault conviction. On Friday, the top court in Catalonia said it had overturned the 41-year-old's conviction because the original ruling presented 'inconsistencies and contradictions'. Alves was found guilty in February 2024 of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022, and sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. He was then released in March last year on bail of €1 million (£830,000), pending the appeal. In its ruling to overturn the conviction, the Catalan high court said the alleged victim's testimony lacked reliability and that 'what she recounted does not correspond to reality'. The four judges of the appeal court wrote that the testimony of the alleged victim 'differed notably' from evidence of video footage. Travel restrictions on Alves have now been lifted, allowing him to leave the country, but the ruling could yet be appealed to the Spanish supreme court in Madrid. Last year, the decision to free Alves from prison on bail was condemned by the alleged victim's lawyer as justice 'for the rich'. Ester Garcia told Spain's El món a RAC1 podcast: 'It is a scandal that they let him go free... It seems that justice is being done for the rich. 'They said that he has a small financial capacity right now, but I have no doubt that he will get the million from wherever he is.' Alves is regarded as one of the finest defenders in the history of the game, having won numerous trophies during a career that included spells at Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris St-Germain. The Brazilian won three Champions League titles with Barcelona and was a domestic league title winner in Spain, Italy and France. He made 126 appearances for the Brazil national team.
