PHOTO: RADIO PAKISTAN Pakistan on Tuesday signed an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) that establishes a legal framework for all marine and maritime activities. DPM Ishaq Dar signed the agreement at the United Nations Headquarters here, during his eight-day visit to the United States of America. Pakistan played a leading role during the BBNJ negotiations, serving as Chair of the Group of 77 and China during the two main sessions in 2022.

PHOTO: RADIO PAKISTAN Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will travel to the United States next week to participate in high-level events marking Pakistan's presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York, the Foreign Office said has confirmed. Dar will chair multiple signature events at the UN headquarters, including a high-level open debate on "Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Settlement of Disputes." The session aims to reinforce multilateral diplomacy and mediation as key tools for resolving global conflicts. He will also preside over the UNSC's quarterly open debate on the "Situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question," underscoring Pakistan's continued focus on long-standing international disputes, the FO added. In addition, Dar is scheduled to chair a special UNSC briefing on strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), part of Pakistan's broader diplomatic push to link multilateral institutions in pursuit of peace. To reaffirm Pakistan's solidarity with Palestine, the deputy prime minister will attend a high-level conference on the "Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution." The event is expected to spotlight Islamabad's call for an end to occupation and a just resolution to the decades-old conflict. During his stay in New York, Dar is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with fellow foreign ministers and senior UN officials. He will later travel to Washington for additional engagements, though specific details of the visit have not yet been announced.

During the meeting, he conveyed warm wishes from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Malaysia. He also appreciated Malaysia's leadership as ASEAN Chair for the year 2025. Dar also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Prak Sokhonn, on sidelines of 32nd ARF in Kuala Lumpur.

In his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, both the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening of bilateral relations and agreed to meet again next week during SCO council of Ministers meeting, a DPM's Office statement said. Dar also met Australian Foreign Minister Senator Hon Penny Wong. They reiterated strong Pakistan-Australia ties and commitment to enhance cooperation in trade, education, and people-to-people links. In a "productive and forward-looking engagement," he said Pakistani diaspora and cricket were a living bridge between the countries. Both sides agreed to boost bilateral trade, currently at $1.186 billion, promote academic partnerships, and increase high-level political exchanges. Separately, Dar met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and reaffirmed the enduring strength of Pakistan-Sri Lanka bilateral relations. During the meeting, both ministers expressed satisfaction over the robustness of ties between the two countries and pledged to further deepen cooperation in key areas. The discussions focused on high-level political exchanges, expanding economic partnerships, religious tourism, and educational collaboration, a DPM's Office statement said. Dar emphasized the importance of promoting people-to-people contacts and sectoral cooperation, noting that the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is rooted in shared regional interests and historical bonds. The two ministers also held in-depth discussions on regional and global developments, including recent geopolitical shifts in South Asia and beyond. They agreed on the need to strengthen multilateral collaboration and continue supporting peace, stability, and inclusive growth across the region.

PHOTO: RADIO PAKISTAN Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will represent Pakistan at the 32nd Ministerial Meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 11 (tomorrow). The high-level meeting will bring together foreign ministers and senior representatives from 27 ARF member countries, as well as the secretary-general of ASEAN, to deliberate on key political and security challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region, a DPM's Office statement said. The agenda will emphasise strengthening peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation through constructive dialogue. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dar will articulate Pakistan's perspective on regional and global developments, underscoring the country's commitment to multilateralism and peaceful conflict resolution. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his Malaysian counterpart and other foreign ministers attending the forum. During his stay in Kuala Lumpur, the DPM will also interact with members of the Pakistani diaspora in Malaysia. Established in 1994, the ARF is a premier multilateral platform for political and security consultations in the Asia-Pacific.
