(AP Photo/Lynne Sladky) MIAMI (AP) — Kyle Tucker had a homer among his three hits and knocked in the tiebreaking run with a single and fielding error by Miami in the eighth inning as the Chicago Cubs beat the Marlins 2-1 on Wednesday. The NL Central-leading Cubs took two games of the three-game set against Miami after a walk-off loss on Monday and have won seven of their last nine games. Advertisement Chicago rookie Matt Shaw drew a leadoff walk against Marlins reliever Anthony Bender (1-3) in the eighth and stole second. Tucker's second single advanced Shaw, who then sprinted home with the eventual game-winning run when Marlins left-fielder Kyle Stowers overran the ball. Brad Keller (1-0) threw 1 1/3 innings of relief and earned his first win since 2023. Daniel Palencia worked a perfect ninth for his first save. For the second consecutive day, Tucker gave the Cubs a first inning lead with a solo homer. Tucker sent a slider from Marlins starter Max Meyer 385 feet over the wall in right for his 12th homer. The Marlins tied it in the bottom half on Connor Norby's RBI infield single. Advertisement Meyer allowed one run and five hits over six innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Making his second major league start, Cubs right-hander Cade Horton threw 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three. Key moment With the bases loaded and two outs, the Marlins had an opportunity for additional runs in the first when Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner dove and caught Matt Mervis' grounder and threw him out. Key stat The Marlins had all six of their hits through the first three innings. Up next The Cubs have not announced a starter for the opener of a three-game series at Cincinnati on Friday. The Marlins open a three-game set at the Los Angeles Angels on Friday with RHP Sandy Alcántara (2-6, 7.99) scheduled to pitch. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Abbie Parr) MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ty France singled in the 10th inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 4-3 victory Wednesday over the New York Mets, who had rallied with a three-run eighth. With the speedy Byron Buxton conveniently on second as the automatic runner, France smacked a 1-1 pitch from Reed Garrett (0-1) with none out that bounced in center field with no chance for Tyrone Taylor to get his glove down. Advertisement Buxton, Harrison Bader and Willi Castro had RBI singles for the Twins (7-12), who won just their second series in six sets this season. First base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt had to leave in the sixth after being hit in the head by a foul ball by Taylor. Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker hit RBI doubles to end a 12-inning scoreless streak for the Mets (11-7) in the eighth against Griffin Jax, and Luisangel Acuña tied it with a two-out single. Bader saved the Twins another run or two with a diving catch of Taylor's line drive to end the eighth. Bader, who played for the Mets last year, threw out Winker at the plate in the second. Advertisement The Mets got 3 1/3 solid innings from Justin Hagenman in his major league debut after his call-up from Triple-A Syracuse in a bullpen game after Griffin Canning was scratched for illness. Key moment Castro's RBI single in the sixth came after a diving stop by Alonso at first and a throw to pitcher José Buttó. The Mets unsuccessfully used their challenge earlier and thus couldn't request a review, but replays appeared to show Buttó's foot beat Castro's to the bag. Key stat Francisco Lindor singled in the eighth and has a 20-game hitting streak at Target Field since Aug. 8, 2019, the longest by an opponent in the ballpark's 16-year history. Advertisement Up next The Mets host St. Louis for four games starting Thursday. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Canning would likely re-enter the rotation early in the series, but he wasn't ready to annpounce a starter for the opener, when RHP Andre Pallante (2-0, 2.20 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals. The Twins begin a three-game series Friday at Atlanta when RHP Chris Paddack (0-2, 9.49 ERA) starts opposite Braves RHP Bryce Elder (0-1, 7.20 ERA). ___ AP MLB:

Why Karen Weekly says she pulled Karlyn Pickens after first inning of Tennessee softball vs Texas

Junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens started Tennessee softball's matchup with No. 1 Texas on April 11, but she threw only one inning before she was pulled from the game. Pickens (15-4) struck out two and walked one walk. She didn't return to the circle with the game still 0-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman pitcher Erin Nuwer entered the game instead. When Tennessee coach Karen Weekly was asked about Pickens' status during her interview between the third and fourth inning, Weekly said Pickens was fine and it was part of the game plan. "There's nothing wrong with Karlyn, she's great," Weekly said with an upbeat tone. "Just something that we've kind of thought about doing, kind of see how the game is flowing, and I kind of stuck with my game plan going in." Going into Friday's matchup, Pickens ranked No. 4 in the nation with a 0.94 ERA, No. 5 in hits allowed per seven innings (3.75) and No. 10 in strikeouts (153). Pickens is having an unprecedented junior season after winning SEC Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore. She threw the fastest pitch ever recorded at 78 mph against Arkansas on March 25, besting her previous fastest pitch of 77 mph that tied Monica Abbott's record. PICKENS: Lady Vols softball pitcher Karlyn Pickens proving last season was no fluke. Just ask Duke Nuwer gave up a single before forcing three ground outs to end the second inning. But in the third inning, Texas' offense started getting hot. Nuwer struck out the first hitter, but the Longhorns got on base the next at-bat by getting hit by a pitch. Then they hit a double and scored two runs on the following single. Texas took a 3-0 lead by the end of the third inning with another RBI-single. Nuwer was relieved in the fourth inning by freshman pitcher Peyton Tanner, who had only thrown 20⅔ innings this season going into the matchup. Nuwer finished the night with five hits allowed in two innings and three earned runs. Cora Hall covers University of Tennessee women's athletics. Email her at and follow her on X @corahalll. Jesus Luzardo fans 11 in Phillies' debut to defeat Nationals

March 29 - Kyle Schwarber homered for the second consecutive game, Jesus Luzardo pitched five solid innings in his Philadelphia debut and the visiting Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 11-6 on Saturday. Brandon Marsh had three hits including a three-run homer, and Bryson Stott had a homer and a double for the Phillies. Acquired last December in a trade with the Miami Marlins, the 27-year-old Luzardo (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits. Making his first Major League appearance since last June, Luzardo struck out 11 and walked three. Phillies shortstop Trea Turner was scratched before first pitch with a low back spasm. Keibert Ruiz hit his second home run in as many games for the Nationals, and Ahmed Rosario and Nathaniel Lowe also went deep. Washington starter Jake Irvin gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. Nationals' pitchers walked eight batters, six of whom came around to score. Rosario led off the bottom of the Washington second with a single and, with one out, Ruiz homered to center off a 1-0 changeup to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Max Kepler walked with one out and Stott lined a two-out homer to the right-field corner to tie it 2-2. The Phillies broke it open with a five-run sixth. Nick Castellanos and Stott drew one-out walks against Colin Poche (0-2). After Marsh singled to load the bases, Lucas Sims came on to face Edmundo Sosa, who walked to force in a run. Another run scored on a wild pitch and then Schwarber hit a three-run homer to right-center to make it 7-2. Washington got a run back when Rosario homered in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Castellanos and Stott walked against Orlando Ribalto and Marsh followed with a three-run shot to right to make it 10-3. Bryce Harper scored on an infield single by Johan Rojas to increase the lead to 11-3 in the eighth, but Lowe hit a two-run shot in the bottom half to make it 11-5 and added an RBI-single in the ninth.
