Binghamton University team wins $50K grant from SUNY Startup Summer School Demo Day
Binghamton University is no stranger to success in the STEM fields, and the school is celebrating a recent win at season four of the SUNY Startup Summer School Demo Day.
The program, in which teams compete for a $100,000 prize pool to accelerate startups and new technologies, was attended by 15 teams and 222 students from 30 different SUNY schools. It is designed to help students and faculty secure funding necessary to bring new products to markets, with each team selected for season four having access to industry experts in a mentorship role.
All participating teams have access to mentoring, but only three receive startup seed funding. Binghamton University's REMIX team, led by assistant professor Jayson Boubin, will receive a $50,000 grant for its first-place finish.
REMIX, a real-time hyperspectral imaging technology, can help humanitarian agencies detect landmines, with future applications possible in ecology, agriculture and energy sectors.

Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said REMIX has the potential to truly create change across multiple fields.
"Jayson's innovative work is happening at the intersection of autonomous drones, machine learning models, and problem-solving in fields including agriculture, landmine detection, and infrastructure inspection," Stenger said in a statement. "Our faculty are constantly making discoveries that make our world a better place and I am excited to see that Jayson is being recognized and supported as a leader in research and scholarship by SUNY.'
The program's two other winners, University at Albany's sxRNA Technologies and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University's Vasocure, will both receive $25,000 grants through the program. Winners for season four were selected by a panel of business leaders from across New York.
In a statement, SUNY Chancellor John King congratulated the three winning teams and said the work put in by all participants is part of shaping the future of technology and research.
"SUNY is the home to groundbreaking and life-saving research, and our campuses are filled with talented and innovative researchers ready to apply what they learn in the classroom into real-life solutions for our society's most complex issues,' King said. "The SUNY Startup Summer School Demo Day is an opportunity to showcase innovators from throughout the SUNY system, and provide support for these entrepreneurs to unleash their full potential."
