Michael Palin says he's preparing for the end of his life in moving update

Sir Michael Palin says he has made preparations for the end of his life. In a new interview, the Monty Python star spoke about his will and how his kids "know where to find what they need to find should I die". The TV star has opened up about the devastating loss of his wife, Helen, who died in 2023, reports The Mirror. Speaking about their romance and life together, he said: "Helen and I met on holiday in 1959. I was about 16 at the time. It was a holiday romance that built up to a long marriage. There was always a feeling that we were a unit – I hadn't really realised until that after she'd died. "That was a difficult thing: there was half of your life gone. I still say, 'We've got in our garden...', 'We have two grandchildren...' although she's still here. I still use the 'we'. I find it almost impossible to say, 'I am...'." In an interview for the On the Marie Curie Couch podcast, Michael explained that his wife had been in pain for years following a knee replacement before a "number of different things were diagnosed". "She had some problems with her heart. The gradual withdrawal from life was something I think she found very, very difficult; she was a gregarious person and full of fun. In the end, she was diagnosed with kidney failure. Then she got pneumonia and we went into hospital. We had a pretty bad experience there," he explained. Michael Palin with his late wife, Helen (Image: Alan Davidson/REX/Shutterstock) He said the care she had received at a Marie Curie hospice had made all the difference and that she was happier during her last few days than in the previous six years of her life. Michael has three children with his late wife Helen - William, Rachel and Thomas. He admitted: "I do think about death and the family are rather wonderful about it: 'Have you made a will?' 'Can I be in your will?' "I've made my will and all that. My family, my children, know where to find what they need to find should I die." He insisted he doesn't dwell on mortality and lives for each day but admits he's "slightly unsteady" on his feet from time to time. He said: "I'm 82 now, which is longer than any Palin male has lived for 200 years. I keep fit and I'm working, fortunately, and doing some quite difficult stuff, filming and all that. "I kid myself that I'm going to be alright, and yet I know that I won't because you feel tired at certain times. You're slightly unsteady as you get out of bed, and you think, 'what's happening?' Well, the old car's getting a bit rusty." Michael had open heart surgery back in 2019 and says the death of his wife Helen had helped the whole family look at death in a more direct way, something which he was discouraged from doing as a kid. Vogue Williams set to take on Olympic boxer for Gladiators special

TV star Vogue Williams is set to compete against Nicola Adams on Celebrity Gladiators. The 39-year-old Dubliner - who won the first series of Bear Grylls: Mission Survive - and the 42-year-old Olympic boxer will battle it out against the famous Gladiators before going head-to-head in the final round of the competition. Vogue has yet to comment on being the new sign-up but the mother-of-three has just returned from her Spanish holiday with husband Spencer Matthews. On the men's side, fitness guru Joe Wicks, 39, and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! former champion Sam Thompson will be taking part. (Image: ITV/REX/Shutterstock) Filming on the show took place on Tuesday for broadcast later this year, and bosses are said to be looking to make the episode more competitive than the previous star-studded special, which featured comedians Rob Beckett, Joel Dommett and Ellie Taylor, and presenter Louise Minchin. A source told The Sun newspaper: "Last year, producers of the debut celebrity version played it for laughs with three comedians taking part — with hilarious results for viewers. "But this year they've assembled four celebrities who can give the Gladiators a serious run for their money, and serve up a clash to savour." Ellie previously admitted she felt like she'd been "hit by a bus" after going up against the elite female Gladiators. She told the Metro newspaper of the experience: "While 'Strictly' was a marathon, 'Gladiators' was like a sprint - a sprint lined with muscly women. "Afterwards I felt like I'd been hit by a bus made of women who love protein powder. They are machines. Just being in the same room as a load of Gladiators when they've had their hair and makeup done and are in their outfits with fake tan … they look like a different breed. It's like popping up and visiting the gods but you're actually in a locker room in Sheffield. "It was really fun, and my little girl was in the audience. It fuelled me on in quite a pathetic way to try to please her. I watched it as a kid - it's proper family viewing." The celebrity special will broadcast ahead of the third season of the rebooted game show, which will be filmed next week and broadcast early next year. Bradley Walsh and his son Barney will return as hosts. Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here.

9 thriller movies we'll probably never get to see – and the reasons why

Link is copied Comments Whether you're a fan of gritty crime dramas, tense courtroom encounters, psychological shockers or murder mysteries, the thriller is one of the widest and most popular genres in cinema. All types of movies fall under this banner (and it's a genre which has kept us glued to the screen for decades, and has continued to do so in 2025), from the likes of Black Bag and Drop through to the upcoming remake of The Running Man and the big screen version of best-selling novel The Housemaid. But for every dose of thrills keeping us on the edge of our seat, the path is littered with those that never quite made it. Here's 10 from all sub-genres of thriller that once could have been box office gold, yet never saw the light of day... (Picture: REX/Shutterstock) First up, we have this intriguing sounding action thriller which was all set to be made courtesy of Lethal Weapon producer Joel Silver, with Wesley Snipes taking the lead. Sandblast, which was originally tipped to star Eddie Murphy, told the story of a landmine expert navigating a dangerous desert. But despite the interesting premise and big name cast, it never became a reality, and the reason isn't clear. However YouTube channel TheItalianStallion has taken a closer look at the film that never was, citing everything from its similarity to 90s movie Broken Arrow, to creative issues around co-star Jean-Claude Van Damme (Photo by) The Wachowskis have given the movie world hits such as the Matrix franchise, Cloud Atlas and the 90s indie gem Bound. But one project of theirs which never became a reality was their adaptation of Joseph R Garber's 1995 best-seller Vertical Run. Kurt Russell had been tipped to star in the movie about an executive who has the work day from hell, after his boss - and everyone else he meets - tries to kill him. But despite all the big-name talent attached, and the backing of Warner Bros, this one never made it past pre-production. It's not clear why, but we can't pretend this wouldn't have made a cracking film (Picture:) Nothing to do with the social media behemoth, Tick-Tock was originally announced in 2001 with a stellar cast that included the likes of Samuel L Jackson and Jennifer Lopez. The plot centred on an amnesiac who wakes up in the custody of the FBI and finds out he is the prime suspect for a string of bomb attacks in Los Angeles. The film was set to go into production in early 2002, however reports at the time suggested it was shelved following the 9/11 attacks that same year. Filmmaker Stephen Norrington, who was attached to the project, went on to make The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but has since retired from directing (Picture: John Nacion/Variety via Getty Images) Vince Vaughn has been a familiar face on screens over the past few decades thanks to his roles in the likes of Dodgeball, The Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up and recent Netflix smash Nonnas. But one movie he was attached to that we never got to see was the big-screen version of Ridley Pearson's suspense thriller The Risk Agent. The actor was announced in 2012 to have acquired the film rights to the novel, about a military contractor who joins forces with a Chinese intelligence officer to investigate a kidnapping. All of which sounds like cinematic gold. Except, 13 years later, we're still waiting to see it, with reports suggesting it's still 'in development'. Could it happen? In theory, yes, but with no release date or production date forthcoming, who knows if it'll ever become a reality (Picture:) So this one might tip into the realms of romance, but it's a romantic thriller more than anything else, so we'll include it. The Bodyguard, which stars Kevin Costner as a former Secret Service agent turned reluctant bodyguard to a superstar singer (Whitney Houston), was pretty much imprinted on the brain of anyone who grew up in the 90s. Mainly for Houston's smash hit track I Will Always Love You, of course. And it was so huge that it's not surprising there were plans for a sequel, which this time would have featured Costner starring alongside the late Princess Diana. Following her tragic, premature death in 1997, however, plans ground to a halt. And while that put an end to all plans for a sequel, the Bodyguard has lived on as a hit stage musical - and Deadline revealed in April a remake of the original is in development (Picture: Warner Bros) You'd think a filmmaker as revered as Alfred Hitchcock would have no problem getting a movie before the cameras, right? Well, that's where you're wrong. The creative genius behind such classic films as Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window and Strangers On A Train did have some projects which never made it to screen. Notably, 1967's Kaleidoscope, the dark tale of a New York bodybuilder-turned-serial killer, who lures his female victims to their deaths near water. Unfortunately, we'll never know what might have been with this low-budget effort - as executives at MCA/Universal turned the script down, deciding it was just too explicit for them. Hitchcock went on to make espionage thriller Topaz instead, before releasing serial killer thriller Frenzy in 1972 (Photo) Spike Lee's 2006 crime thriller starring Denzel Washington and Chiwitel Ajiofor was a critical and commercial hit when it was released, scoring an impressive 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes - and becoming the director's highest-grossing movie ahead of previous champion Malcolm X. So it's no surprise that a sequel was planned for the movie, which centred on an elaborate bank-heist turned hostage drama on Wall Street. However, Lee himself revealed in 2011 that plans for the follow-up had been shelved as he could not secure funding. 'Inside Man was my most successful film, but we can't get the sequel made,' he said at the time. Instead, film fans had to make do with a belated follow-up, 2019's Inside Man: Most Wanted, with a whole new cast and director. You can see that one on Netflix, while being left to wonder how Lee's version might have been (Picture: Lee/Universal/Kobal/Shutterstock) Now here's one that had a pretty top-notch cast attached, with the likes of Gerard Butler, Matthew McConaughey and Sam Worthington all reported to be on board at the time. The film, based on the novel Thunder Run - The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad by David Zucchino, about the capture of the Iraqi capital by US forces in 2003, was originally announced in 2011. And aside from the cast, it promised some pretty impressive visuals too, with the movie set to be shot in 3D and feature CGI motion-capture technology. It never became a reality, though. Why, we're not sure, but we can't pretend we're not a little disappointed by its non-appearance (Picture:for Tribeca Festival) Considering his track record in action thrillers over the decades, Jason Statham seems like the perfect choice to topline a movie based on a novel by Andy McNab. And so it was that the Beekeeper star was revealed to be starring as an SAS agent in Echelon, based on McNab's book Firewall. Except the author revealed in 2011 that scheduling clashes had forced the star to quit. 'There are so many films he's got lined up, there wouldn't be a slot for him to do it,' he told Digital Spy. We've not heard a peep from this adaptation since then, so whether or not it'll get made, with Statham or another star, remains to be seen (Picture: Max Cisotti/Dave Benett/WireImage) Next Gallery

Lord of dancing into the Áras? Michael Flatley to make presidency bid, court told

Riverdance star Michael Flatley is to seek a nomination to become Ireland's next president, a court has heard. The choreographer's barrister made the announcement during a High Court case he has taken in relation to works carried out at his mansion in Co Cork, the Castlehyde. Barrister Ronnie Hudson notified the court of a 'material change in circumstances' for Flatley, and said he is to move back to Ireland within the next 14 days and look to run in the presidential election this autumn. Pic:for The Irish Post An affidavit, signed by Flatley's solicitor Maxwell Mooney, was submitted to the court stating that the Irish-American is 'to seek nominations to run for president of Ireland'. Lord Of The Dance star Flatley, who is eligible to run as an Irish citizen, had strongly hinted at a presidential bid last week, but said he had not made a final decision. He said during a radio interview that he did not believe the Irish people 'have a voice – not a true proper deep voice that speaks their language'. Michael Flatley. Pic: David Rose/REX/Shutterstock Flatley said he hears concerns from the 'average person on the street' and they are not 'happy right now'. 'Somebody has to speak for the Irish people,' he said. He was in Ireland earlier this month where he performed on a flute at a July 4 celebration hosted at the residence of the US Ambassador to Ireland, Edward Walsh, who was recently appointed to the role by Donald Trump. Michael Flatley. Pic: David M. Benett/for Audi UK An election for the largely ceremonial role is expected towards the end of October, as it must take place in the 60 days before outgoing President Michael D Higgins's term ends on November 11. To be eligible to run, a candidate must be an Irish citizen who is 35 or older. They must be nominated either by at least 20 members of the Irish parliament or at least four local authorities. Michael Flatley. Pic:for The Irish Post So far, two candidates have secured sufficient backing to enter the race: former farming journalist and EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness, who is the Fine Gael nominee; and Catherine Connolly, a left-wing independent and former Galway mayor who has received the backing of opposition parties and independents. Several other figures have hinted at their intention to run, including MMA fighter Conor McGregor, who has criticised the Irish Government's policies on immigration and public safety. At the High Court on Friday, defence barristers in Flatley's case argued against the affidavit being accepted by the court, and stated that it was an attempt by Flatley to 'move the goalposts'. Andrew Fitzpatrick SC said Flatley had said before in 2024 that he intended to move to Paris and then Valencia. 'That didn't happen,' he told the court. He also said that if the court was prepared to admit the affidavit, it would undermine previous assertions made by Flatley's side that the reason he is living in Monaco and cannot return to the state is because of the condition of the Castlehyde. Ms Justice Eileen Roberts said that as Flatley's residence 'is so central to the issue of security of costs' in the case, she would allow the affidavit to be taken into account, but said she 'entirely' heard submissions made by the defence about the characteristics of the affidavit and what weight it should be afforded. She said she expected the judgment in relation to the costs application to be delivered in a 'reasonably short period', and that it would be given 'shortly after' the end of the courts term.
