Mass. health care leaders want RFK Jr. to expand telehealth
Massachusetts hospital leaders met Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s request for deregulation suggestions with a wish list that includes reducing telehealth restrictions. The big picture: The controversial Health and Human Services secretary is accepting input from hospitals and health care groups nationwide to cut red tape. State of play: The Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association (MHA) sent its wish list last week, asking the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to standardize the process for obtaining prior authorization across health plans, reviving certain home health programs and expanding telehealth. The MHA also asked the federal government to eliminate prior authorization requirements for Medicare Advantage patients who receive certain services after they're discharged from a hospital. Zoom in: Telehealth has become increasingly common since the COVID-19 pandemic, but several barriers to access and coverage remain, health officials say. The MHA's asks range from expanding coverage for audio-only telehealth to letting more practitioners perform telehealth visits and get paid (think occupational therapy, physical therapy or speech-language pathology appointments). The MHA also asked the CMS to revive a pandemic-era program that lets patients do cardiac or pulmonary rehab from home, among other programs that have since lapsed. The MHA did not respond to requests for an interview about its recommendations. Zoom out: Kennedy has previously expressed support for telehealth, in part to increase health care access in rural communities. He and other federal officials pledged last month to cut red tape that complicates the prior authorization process. That pledge includes standardizing electronic prior authorization requests, reducing the number of medical services that require it and ensuring medical professionals review all clinical denials, NPR reported. Yes, but: The focus of MHA's request for information (RFI) is to cut red tape and spending, which may not bode well for requests to revive old programs. The executive order that sparked the RFI called for implementing the 10-to-1 rule, meaning that "for every new regulation introduced, at least 10 existing regulations must be eliminated."

Delhi HC allows new office-bearers to take charge at RFI
Pune: Balaji Maradappa, a former rower and coach, has taken over as president of the Rowing Federation of India after the Delhi High Court allowed the results of the national body's elections held last year to be declared and the new set of office-bearers to take charge. Maradappa, who was treasurer in the previous administration, took over from Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, who served as president for three terms. He tallied 36 votes against 14 by rival candidate Harpal Singh. Subhashish Mukherjee won the contest for the secretary's post with a 35-15 win against Rajpal Singh; Chiranjit Phukan beat Rajiv Sharma 37-11 for the treasurer's position. "Ramalinga Reddy of the Karnataka rowing association was barred because he was 70 years and three months. He is the state transport minister, he had helped build a beautiful (rowing) facility," Maradappa said. The Delhi Rowing Association had filed a petition in the Delhi HC early last year, seeking a stay on the elections citing RFI's non-compliance with the National Sports Code of 2011 as well as the ruling of a Division bench of the Delhi HC in the Rahul Mehra vs the Union of India case in August 2022. In response, the RFI brought to the court's attention that the petitioner itself was in violation of the Sports Code, prompting the court to allow the elections to go ahead on February 25, 2024, but with the ballot boxes to remain sealed. The court also asked the then set of office-bearers to continue to be in-charge till further orders and make the RFI code-compliant. In their latest order dated July 2nd, Justices Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, and Tushar Rao Gedela noted that the grievances of the DRA were relevant but keeping the results of the elections in abeyance indefinitely was "not conducive either to the institutions or the democratic values". "It is in the interest of administration of any institution, that too in a democratic setup like ours, to ensure that a duly elected body is in place to manage and administer the affairs of the institution," the judges wrote. "... keeping in view that the petitioner itself was, concededly, not eligible to participate in the elections ... coupled with the fact that more than one and half year has already passed since the elections were held, it does not appeal to reason as to why the result of the elections should not be declared and why the elected body should not be handed charge." The judges added that "the results of such election would be subject to the outcome of the present writ petition" as well as the Supreme Court's final verdict in the case involving the All India Football Federation. Shahrukh Ejaz, advocate in the Delhi HC for RFI, said the federation was confident about the final verdict as it had completed the compliance process. "We have also shared the new charter with the state associations and all of them except three associations have complied and provided an affidavit to that effect," he said. The three non-compliant units are Goa, Delhi and Manipur, Ejaz said.

Italy reveals new earthquake warning system that halts trains automatically
The country's first earthquake early warning system is now in use on the Rome-Naples line, Italian national railway operator Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has announced, with sensors capable of stopping trains before a major quake hits. RFI brought in the system in partnership with Japan's Railway Technical Research Institute (JR RTRI) and the physics department of the University of Naples Federico II. The Early Seismic Warning system (EWS), a network of sensors installed along the high-speed line between the two southern cities, can detect the first seismic waves in real time before automatically slowing or stopping approaching trains, researchers at the University of Naples explained. The system was first used on May 3rd, according to RFI. On May 13th, it was successfully tested when a 4.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Naples area, leading to high-speed trains being halted. Similar warning systems are now set to be brought in on other railway lines around Italy and Europe, according to reports, under the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) initiative aimed at standardising rail control and signalling systems. Though Italy rarely sees severe earthquakes which pose a risk to life, smaller quakes are a regular occurrence in many areas, particularly in the Campi Flegrei area near Naples. The region, which is home to around half a million people, is Europe's largest volcanic 'caldera', a basin-like depression formed when a volcano collapses into itself. Seismic activity in Campi Flegrei has increased in recent years due to a phenomenon known as 'bradyseism' – the slow, vertical movement of the Earth's surface due to changes in the volume of magma and hot gases beneath. The increasing frequency and intensity of seismic events has raised fears of a future volcanic eruption, but Italian scientists have said this is unlikely.

Football's digital frontier is shifting: How UEFA wants to lead charge?
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has ignited the engines of change, launching a sweeping evaluation of its over-the-top (OTT) platform, in what could lead to a complete technical reboot. This move signals the governing body's intent to future-proof its streaming presence, potentially replacing its current tech partner, Endeavor Streaming, and reimagining the service from the ground up. From modest beginnings to monumental ambitions which debuted in June 2019 as a free global service, has steadily offered fans a taste of European football beyond the mainstream. Powered by Endeavor's Vesper technology, the platform currently hosts over 250 live events per season, covering youth, women's, and futsal competitions. Now, UEFA is preparing to blow past those numbers, envisioning a quadrupled output of up to 1,000 live events annually. This includes not just matches, but draws, real-time data overlays, and sophisticated enforcement of global geo-rights—all wrapped in layers of DRM and anti-piracy protection. Monetisation mission: Beyond free access No longer content with an ad-supported model, UEFA is actively exploring tiered pay-per-view pricing, including per-match, competition-wide, monthly, and annual payment plans. Also on the agenda: dynamic ad insertions, branded content hubs, and strategic sponsorship integration. The goal? To elevate from free platform to revenue engine, without losing its global reach or integrity. In a strategic move, UEFA has issued a Request for Information (RFI), a precursor to a possible Request for Proposal (RFP). The RFI invites leading tech providers to reimagine the future of while making it crystal clear that nothing is set in stone. "UEFA seeks to gather insights from industry-leading suppliers… whether through enhancing the existing service or transitioning to a new technical partner," the organisation stated. Importantly, UEFA emphasised that the RFI is informational, not contractual. The outcome might be a refinement, or a full supplier switch. Endeavor's position under review Earlier this year, Endeavor Streaming led a user experience refresh, updating interface and expanding its content offerings. But even those enhancements may not be enough to secure their future role. A new agreement, should UEFA move forward with an RFP, would come into effect in April 2026. From niche to necessity: The expansion blueprint While traditionally focused on less mainstream competitions, has shown glimpses of its growing ambition. In early 2024, it streamed Nations League matches for Italian users in English, until Sky Italia swooped in with a third-party deal covering the semis, final, and qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Clock Ticking: Who will stream UEFA's Future? The deadline for RFI submissions is August 22 at noon CET. UEFA plans to issue the full RFP in mid-October, with first-round bids due by December 5. In an increasingly crowded streaming landscape, stands at a crossroads—and the world's biggest tech players may soon battle to control the screen where Europe's future football stories unfold.
