Mariah Carey's Career-Saving Single Earns Another Major Win

Mariah Carey dominated the Billboard charts throughout the 1990s like few before her ever had, and she mounted something of a career comeback in the mid-2000s. After a few years of relative commercial disappointments, the song that helped relaunch her to the top of the rankings and cemented her status as a true hitmaker once again has earned a new platinum certification — and in doing so, breaks out of a tie. "We Belong Together" has now been certified seven times-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The track was previously awarded a six-times platinum plaque in September 2022. In the nearly three years since then, it has shifted another one million equivalent units, combining pure purchases and streaming activity. As it moves up from six- to seven-times platinum, "We Belong Together" breaks its tie with "Fantasy" and now stands alone as Carey's second most-certified single ever. "Fantasy" dips to third place on Carey's all-time certified songs ranking. Leading the way in a very distant first place among Carey's major wins is "All I Want for Christmas Is You." This past December, that track was advanced to 16-times platinum, meaning it has moved 16 million equivalent units in the U.S. alone. The holiday smash is currently tied with "God's Plan" by Drake and "Goosebumps" by Travis Scott as one of the seventh most-certified tunes in American history. Carey released "We Belong Together" in March 2005 as the second single from The Emancipation of Mimi, which wouldn't arrive for another month. By that point, "It's Like That" — her collaboration with Jermaine Dupri and Fatman Scoop — had already returned her to the top 20 on the Hot 100, but its follow-up would prove to be much bigger. "We Belong Together" shot straight to No. 1 on the most important songs tally in America, becoming her sixteenth career leader. It held onto the throne for 14 nonconsecutive frames during its lifetime, and the tune effectively put her back on top and reestablished her as a pop superstar. As "We Belong Together" earns its seventh platinum plaque, The Emancipation of Mimi – the album on which it's featured – also becomes a bestseller once again, albeit in a different way. Carey recently released a twentieth anniversary edition of the beloved project, and as of the time of writing, it sits at No. 18 on the iTunes Top Albums list as fans rush to purchase the newly reissued collection.

Drake Makes History As First Ever Artist With 10 Diamond Records, Social Media Reminds Haters

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Drake set a wild new record; he's now the only artist with 10 diamond-certified tracks under his belt. The RIAA confirmed that both 'Hold On, We're Going Home' and his breakout banger 'Best I Ever Had' have officially gone diamond, meaning each has moved over 10 million units. That puts him at the top, passing every other artist in the game when it comes to diamond hits. Once the news hit Instagram, the reactions were all over the place. Some fans gave him his flowers, with one person writing, 'You can't hate on this… greatness right here.' But the Kendrick vs. Drake debate popped right back up. A Kendrick fan jumped in saying, 'Nobody said Drake didn't have hits, we just saying Dot raps better. The machine behind Drake been running strong for years.' While everyone's talking numbers, Drake's already back in the lab. He told Adin Ross during a stream on Kick that he's cooking up something new, calling the next project a 'slap.' His post on IG with the caption 'Iceman' had fans guessing that it might be tied to the name or vibe of his next drop. If true, it'll be his first solo album since For All the Dogs in 2023. On top of that, he's linking up with Kai Cenat for a new music video for 'SOMEBODY LOVES ME.' They're running a contest where fans can submit their ideas for a chance to win $15K and get featured in the final cut. Drake even popped up at Cenat's 'Streamer University' event last weekend, keeping his finger on the pulse of what's hot online. At this point, Drake isn't just breaking records, he's rewriting the rules. Metallica's Number Of Platinum Hits Explodes

Metallica has ranked as one of the bestselling rock bands of all time for decades, but the group's commercial success has largely been centered around albums, not singles — at least as far as certifications are concerned. For an act that has remained hugely popular for so long, many might be surprised to learn that the rock outfit claimed only a relatively small number of RIAA-certified hits — meaning tunes that have been named gold or platinum in the U.S. – until recently. That has changed, as Metallica scores dozens of new honors from the music industry organization, and in one fell swoop, the band proves once again just how massively popular its back catalog remains. Before May 28, when the RIAA handed down a new swath of certifications to Metallica, the band had only ever scored one platinum-certified hit in the U.S. 'Enter Sandman' was named a gold smash in 2008 and a platinum success in 2009. Now, it has advanced to nine-times platinum status, which means it has shifted nine million equivalent units in the U.S. One more of these awards, and it will become the rock outfit's first diamond-certified tune — a prestigious honor that is surely within reach. Nine other smashes by Metallica earn some kind of platinum status, with many moving up from gold, which any piece of music reaches after half a million units shifted. Some had never claimed any certification before. 'For Whom the Bell Tolls,' 'Master of Puppets,' 'Fade to Black,' 'Sad but True,' and 'The Unforgiven' all move up from gold to multi-platinum status. The greatest gainer of that bunch is one that jumps from half a million units to five million, or quintuple platinum. Several others reach the triple platinum tier, and the last three are now double platinum successes. Three other cuts — 'Seek & Destroy,' 'Turn the Page,' and 'Wherever I May Roam' — jump from no recognition to platinum, as they have now moved at least one million equivalent units in the U.S. alone. At the same time, 13 songs by Metallica snag their first plaques and are named gold-certified wins. That roundup includes 'Battery,' 'Blackened,' 'Creeping Death,' 'Don't Tread on Me,' 'Hardwired,' 'Hero of the Day,' 'I Disappear,' 'King Nothing,' 'Ride the Lightning,' 'The Four Horsemen,' 'The Memory Remains,' 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium),' and '...And Justice for All.'

Country music superstars perform chart-topping duet at Boston Calling

The first night of Boston Calling ended with two country music stars sharing the stage for an electrifying duet. Luke Combs brought out Megan Moroney to perform Combs' 2019 smash hit 'Beer Never Broke My Heart.' The song, which was the lead single from Combs' sophomore album 'What You See Is What You Get,' topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart, becoming Combs' sixth consecutive No. 1 on the chart. 'Beer Never Broke My Heart' has been certified six-times platinum by the RIAA as of August 23, 2023. The performance marked a full-circle moment for Moroney as the self-proclaimed 'Emo Cowgirl' appeared as an unpaid extra in the song's music video back in 2019, Combs told the crowd. Moroney also told fans about it during a VIP pre-show at a May 15 concert at the Amory in Minneapolis, Country Chord reported. The 'Am I Okay?' said her best friend drove her to Nashville so she could appear in Combs' video. 'If you literally look at the Spotify canvas, I even made it into the 8 seconds,' Moroney told fans. 'I was supposed to be the drunk girl at the bar, so I was holding up a fake beer.' The 'Tennessee Orange' singer can be seen around the 2:20 mark of the video. Moroney shows up a few more times as well. Combs' closed out night one of Boston Calling on Friday, May 23. ‘80s music icon says she went to Hawaii ‘to die' while battling colon cancer

Taylor Dayne shared some personal details regarding her past bout with cancer. The 'Prove Your Love' singer exclusively told Parade that she previously traveled to Hawaii 'to die' after being diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2022. 'I was at the Blue Note in Hawaii because I said I'm going to go there to die,' Dayne, 63, told the outlet. The 'Don't Rush Me' singer also expressed an interest in playing at the renowned jazz club. 'I'll walk on stage. I'll sit at night [on] my little stool, and I promise you, I'll go back and forth [to the hospital there],' Dayne said. The singer, who has remained cancer-free, added that she met the 'most loving, helping, caring' people in the Aloha State. 'I could receive this incredible blanket and a hug and understanding [from them], and that's when I understood what being an artist really is,' Dayne told Parade. Dayne rose to stardom through the success of her first two albums: 1987's 'Tell It to My Heart' and 1989's 'Can't Fight Fate.' Both albums were certified two-times platinum by the RIAA. Dayne has achieved three gold singles and seven top 10 singles, including 'I'll Always Love You,' 'Tell It to My Heart,' and the chart-topping 'Love Will Lead You Back.' Among Dayne's accolades are an American Music Award, multiple New York Music Awards and nominations for two Grammy Awards. The 'Heart of Stone' singer also told Parade she started working on 'new music about a month ago.' 'The new music we're working on. I think an album's actually in the works,' Dayne said. 'I spoke to my management about it, and we're getting such interesting feedback that we might put [out] a lot more.'
