The legendary Indian hockey star, sports medicine expert and administrator Vece Paes, father of tennis star Leander, reached his heavenly abode on the 14th of August, 2025.
Vece, who was part of the bronze-winning Indian Hockey Team at the 1972 Munich Olympics, transcended the limitations of a sporting individual thanks to his innovations in sport science and his contribution to anti-doping awareness activities.
Dr. Vece Paes, a true sports icon, sadly passed away this morning. His achievements on and off the field inspired generations. Vece contributed to the Indian Hockey team at the Munich Olympics and competed in cricket, football, and rugby at divisional levels. He also served as President of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.
A certified doctor in sports medicine, Vece combined his medical expertise with athletic insight. He also collaborated with the Asian Cricket Council and BCCI on anti-doping education programs.
Vece held the position of President of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, one of the world's oldest sports clubs.
Vece married Jennifer Dutton, a former Indian basketball player and great-granddaughter of Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
His son, Leander Paes, followed in his footsteps as an Olympic medalist in tennis, making them the only father-son duo in India to achieve this feat.
