With Four Wins in Five Races, Alex Palou is Writing His Name in IndyCar's History Book
Last year, Alex Palou won the Indianapolis Grand Prix to start the 'Month of May'; at the time, Chip Ganassi Racing hoped that Palou might finally secure an Indianapolis 500 victory to end the month. One of the only accolades in IndyCar that the Spanish driver is lacking. This year, after starting on the pole and losing the lead to Graham Rahal in the opening corner of the IMS road course, he starts IndyCar's month-long stay in Indiana the same way. This was Palou's fourth win in five races for a driver's best start to a season since AJ Foyt in 1964. That season, Foyt won 10 of 13 races with an average finish of 5.8 through the first five races, Palou now has an average finish of 1.2, and leads by 97 points. A lot happened at the start of the race as Josef Newgarden went to the pits before the start with a broken radio, falling from sixth to the back. Newgarden would end up having one of the drives of the day to rebound to 12th. All three Rahal Lanigan Racing drivers made the Fast Six in qualifying and were able to hold their own up front due to an interesting strategy. This race weekend marked the first race where both sets of hard tires and two sets of soft tires were required for the race, ensuring that all drivers would be on a three-stop pitstop strategy. The RLL drivers chose to go soft-soft for their first two stints, gaining speed and holding position early. The only problem was is that means they would have to try to hold position late against a field on the preferred softer tire at the end of the race. The race started under yellow as the first start was aborted, while not a proper caution, it was a preview of what was to come. Seventy laps into the race, IndyCar had its first caution after 400+ caution-free laps. Meaning the last three races were decided strictly on pitstop strategy, qualifying, and speed. Palou was out front by 10.2 seconds when the caution came out shortening his lead, The race resumed with 13 laps to go. Palou took the win over the McLaren of Pato O'Ward by 5.614 seconds. O'Ward started eight and steadily made his way through the field. Will Power rounded out the podium after starting seventh, followed by his teammate Scott McLaughlin. Unusual Suspects Seek Breakthrough Win from Up Front Saturday
INDYCAR Roughly half of the drivers in Saturday's Sonsio Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway have won at least one NTT INDYCAR SERIES race in their career. Which means, the other half of the 27-car field has not. It's 14 former race winners on the grid, 13 who drive to become one. The question is, which driver will be the next to move from the latter category to the former? There has been at least one first-time winner in five of the past six seasons, and only six seasons since 2000 have not had a first-time winner. Four years ago this week, Rinus VeeKay scored his first series victory by winning the road course race at IMS in May. Christian Lundgaard nearly grabbed his maiden series victory on this 14-turn, 2.439-mile circuit, finishing second in a race in July 2022, and he finished third in last year's Sonsio Grand Prix. The subject of non-winners is relevant to this 85-lap race, where four drivers seeking their first series victory will start in the top 11. Two of those drivers earned a spot in the Firestone Fast Six, with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing rookie Louis Foster starting from a season-high third position, two spots ahead of teammate Devlin DeFrancesco, who tied his career best. Chip Ganassi Racing's Kyffin Simpson will start a career-best 10th for the second consecutive race while AJ Foyt Racing's Santino Ferrucci will line up 11th. All figure to be on the charge when the green flag drops shortly after 4:30 p.m. ET (FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). There is reason to believe any of those four non-winners – and maybe others – could contend for a spot on the podium, if not the race win, as this circuit has seen six different winners in the past seven races. Foster is certainly one to watch in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda, and he posted the second-quickest time in Friday's second practice. Last year's INDY NXT by Firestone champion won a race in that series here last May, and RLL has had considerable success on this circuit. Bobby Rahal's team helped Lundgaard win two of IMS road course races and a pole. Graham Rahal dominated the August 2023 race from the pole, finishing second only because Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon used exceptional pit strategy to beat him. 'This is the first track I've come to in INDYCAR that I've actually won in a junior category,' Foster said. 'The previous rounds, two of them I had never raced at and the other two I had never won at. I know this track really well. It's always been quoted as a European-esque track. Europeans tend to do well here.' RLL will have all three of its current drivers starting in the top six, with Rahal lining up second in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda. DeFrancesco, who drives the No. 30 EVTEC Honda, also started fifth in a 2023 race here, jumping to the lead in the opening two corners and leading the first eight laps. All three RLL drivers have been eager for this event since last year's race. 'A lot of work has gone into this program and from the offseason to now, particularly on the 30 (car),' DeFrancesco said. 'I think there was a lot of frustration leaving Barber (Motorsports Park, site of last week's Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix presented by AmFirst), because I think we had the potential to be up front. It just came down to execution. It's good to see us making steady progress as a group.' Simpson is one of Dixon's teammates, and he has set career bests in each of the past two events. The driver of the No. 8 Journie Rewards Chip Ganassi Racing Honda finished 10th in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach and qualified 10th in the Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix powered by AmFirst. Like Daly, Ferrucci has had exceptional drives in the '500.' All six of his starts have ended with top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish in 2023. He has led 16 laps overall. He drives the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing/Sexton Properties Chevrolet. Marcus Armstrong finished fifth in last year's Sonsio Grand Prix. That result was posted with Chip Ganassi Racing; he's now driving the No. 66 SiriusXM/Root Insurance Honda of Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb-Agajanian. He will start 15th in Saturday's race. All will be chasing Alex Palou in the race to Turn 1. The driver of the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda seeks his fourth win in five races this season. The 14 active drivers who have won races in this series have done so a combined 194 times. The list: Scott Dixon, 58 wins Will Power, 44 Josef Newgarden, 31 Alex Palou, 14 Colton Herta, 9 Alexander Rossi, 8 Scott McLaughlin, 7 Pato O'Ward, 7 Graham Rahal, 6 Marcus Ericsson, 4 Kyle Kirkwood, 3 Felix Rosenqvist, 1 Rinus VeeKay, 1 Christian Lundgaard, 1 recommended

Alex Palou Pounces at Last Second To Cruise to Sonsio GP Pole
INDYCAR The Alex Palou Show continued Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, as the dominant leader of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings used deft tire strategy and a fast car to run away with the NTT P1 Award for the Sonsio Grand Prix. Palou, who has won three of the first four races this season, earned his second straight pole of the year and his second in a row for this race in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. He saved a set of new Firestone Firehawk alternate tires for his last run in the Firestone Fast Six and took the top spot with his final lap of 1 minute, 9.3417 seconds. SEE: Qualifying Results 'We had a bit of an advantage there with a set of new soft tires,' Palou said. 'I think some people used them in Q1 (first round of qualifying), and we didn't. Maybe that's where the time comes. 'But that No. 10 DHL car was amazing. Super-fast. It's been super-fast all season, honestly, but today it's been on fire.' It was the eighth career pole for Palou, whose gap to No. 2 qualifier Graham Rahal was a whopping .4099 of a second. Rahal's best lap was 1:09.7516 in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Rahal led a historic day for RLL, which put three drivers into the Firestone Fast Six for the first time. Rookie Louis Foster qualified a career-best third in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda of RLL at 1:09.8801. His previous best was 10th in March at The Thermal Club. 'It feels so good,' Rahal said. 'What a lap. The balance was really consistent and matched my best of the whole day. It feels great for this entire team. We needed this. We expect to be good at Indy road course, but to see it come together and have three cars in the top five is amazing.' Devlin DeFrancesco kept the good times rolling for RLL by qualifying fifth at 1:09.9432 in the No. 30 EVTEC Honda, tying his career best set in August 2023 on this circuit when he drove for Andretti Global. Scott McLaughlin will start fourth in the 85-lap race Saturday (4:30 p.m. ET, FOX, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network) after his best lap of 1:09.8910 in the No. 3 Sonsio Vehicle Protection Chevrolet fielded by Team Penske. Two-time series champion and two-time reigning Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Josef Newgarden rounded out the Firestone Fast Six with his best lap of 1:09.9829 in the No. 2 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet. Five-time IMS road course winner Will Power just missed putting three Team Penske cars into the Firestone Fast Six for the first time this season, as he ended up seventh at 1:09.9973 in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. Second-year driver Kyffin Simpson continued to show his increasing pace in the No. 8 Journie Rewards Chip Ganassi Racing Honda by qualifying 10th, tying his career-best starting spot from the race last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach winner Kyle Kirkwood, the only driver besides Palou to win this season, qualified a disappointing 21st in the No. 27 PreFab Honda fielded by Andretti Global. A 25-minute warmup session at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (FS1, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network) will precede the race. recommended

RLL Trio Charges to Top in Second Sonsio GP Practice
INDYCAR The Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course has been fast ground for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in recent years, a trend that continued Friday afternoon in the second practice for the Sonsio Grand Prix. RLL's three drivers finished 1-2-3 on the speed chart, with Graham Rahal leading at 1 minute, 9.7242 seconds in the No. 15 Fifth Third Bank Honda. Rookie Louis Foster was second at 1:09.8626 in the No. 45 Mi-Jack Honda, and Devlin DeFrancesco ended up third at 1:10.0690 in the No. 30 EVTEC Honda. SEE: Practice Results Rahal's time was the quickest among the two practice sessions today on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. The performance of RLL should come as no surprise, as Rahal won the pole and finished second on this circuit in an August 2023 race. Christian Lundgaard, now with Arrow McLaren, finished third in this race last year for RLL and second here in July 2022. The top six drivers in today's second practice all turned their best laps on the Firestone Firehawk alternate tire, which offers more grip but less durability. 'We're just not in that place yet as a team where we can be overconfident,' Rahal said. 'It hurt us at Barber. At Barber, we should have gone red-red (two sets of alternate tires) in qualifying, and we didn't. I didn't get a good run on reds because of a mechanical problem on Friday at Barber, and it's haunted me. It's kind of really angered me this week. I felt like we kind of gave up a race weekend by not being a little more thorough in our thinking there. 'This one really came down to first session. If we thought we were good in the first session, we were not going to do it (use alternate tires in second session). But we weren't that good, so we had to. We needed to get a good taste to understand what we need for qualifying.' NTT P1 Award qualifying starts at 4:35 p.m. ET today (FS1, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). Sting Ray Robb was fourth in the second practice today at 1:10.1657 in the No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet. His teammate, Conor Daly, rounded out the top five at 1:10.1919 in the No. 76 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet. NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship leader Alex Palou was the quickest driver on the harder Firestone Firehawk primary tires, seventh at 1:10.2943 in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Palou, who has won this race the last two years, has captured three of the first four races this season. 'Guys like Palou, if you have his confidence level, you know you're good (on alternate tires),' Rahal said of his rival's decision to stay on primary tires for this practice. Live coverage of the 85-lap race starts at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday on FOX, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network. recommended
