Ministry approves new site for 188-year-old Sung Siew

SANDAKAN: The Education Ministry approved the relocation of the 118-year-old Sekolah Menengah Sung Siew here to a new 25-acre site at Batu 4 near Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Sung Siew. The approval letter was handed over during a ceremony at the school on Saturday, witnessed by Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh during his official working visit here. Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan District Education Officer Roslin Siabok, school principal Kwok Chee Yen, SM Sung Siew School Board Chairman Vun Soon Chong and representatives from the Sabah Education Department and alumni. The Ministry granted the approval on June 25, following a request submitted four years ago by the school, Sandakan District Education Office and Sabah Education Department. Kah Woh hopes the relocation approval would expedite the construction process. The current school, built on 2.24 acres owned by the Basel Christian Church Malaysia, would move to the new site at Batu 4, where Sung Siew's primary and preschool sections have already been operating for several years after relocating there. 'Over 80 per cent of students live near Batu 4 residential areas which was a key factor in the decision. Our priority is to provide the best educational access for all students here,' he said. Meanwhile, Vun Soon Chong thanked the Ministry, the Sabah Education Department and the District Education Office for the approval, adding that the school board, parents and staff had been actively fundraising for the new campus through charity events and marathons. Earlier, Kah Woh visited SK Sri Tanjung Papat I and SK Sri Tanjung Papat II in Kampung Sim-Sim, which currently share premises after the latter was destroyed by tidal waves in 2018. Following discussions with parents, the Ministry would seek a new site for SK Sri Tanjung Papat II to accommodate the growing number of students. The Deputy Minister also inspected SK St Mary Town and SK St Mary Labuk, where the Ministry has allocated RM185,000 for upgrading works, including a new canteen. Unapproved cosmetic products seized in Kuala Lumpur raids
KUALA LUMPUR: Various cosmetic products and food supplements lacking approval from the Ministry of Health (MOH) were seized during raids on two premises in Segambut. The items, intended for online sale via social media platforms, were discovered in an operation led by Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA). Director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim stated that the first raid resulted in the arrest of a 40-year-old man, believed to be the premises owner, along with two foreign women aged between 28 and 30. Authorities confiscated 1,972 boxes and 2,551 bottles of unapproved products. 'The suspect then led enforcement officers to another location, where an additional 180 boxes and 895 bottles of non-compliant items were seized. The total estimated value of the confiscated goods is RM185,515,' Azmi said in a statement. The operation was conducted in collaboration with MOH and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers. Investigations are ongoing under Regulations 18A and 7(1)(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Azmi also revealed broader enforcement efforts, noting that from January to July 16, police conducted 167 raids, arresting 300 individuals for offences including smuggling, illegal trade of controlled goods, and wildlife trafficking. The total seizure value during this period exceeded RM541 million. Bukit Aman internal security and public order department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said that in the first raid, they arrested a man and two foreign women, aged from 28 to 30, and seized 1,972 boxes and 2,551 bottles of various types of cosmetic products and food supplements. "A 40-year-old man, who is also the premises owner, then led police personnel to another residence, where we found 180 boxes and 895 bottles of various types of cosmetic products and food supplements without ministry approval, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM185,515," he said in a statement on Sunday (July 20). He said the operation also involved enforcement officers from the Health Ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), adding that the cases are being investigated under Regulations 18A and 7(1)(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Meanwhile, Azmi said that from January to July 16, police carried out 167 raids and arrested 300 people for various offences, including smuggling undeclared goods, leakage of controlled and subsidised goods, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife smuggling and e-waste operations. "The total value of the seizures during that period is estimated at RM541,033,501. Thousands of unapproved health and cosmetic products seized in KL raids
KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities have seized over 5,000 units of unapproved cosmetic and dietary supplement products worth more than RM185,000 in two raids on residential premises in Segambut here. The joint operation, conducted on July 16 by police, the Health Ministry (MOH) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), led to the arrest of a 40-year-old local man and two foreign women, aged 28 and 30. In the first raid, enforcement personnel found 1,972 boxes and 2,551 bottles of various products stored in a house, believed to be used as a warehouse for online sales. Further inspection of a second premises revealed an additional 180 boxes and 895 bottles of unregistered cosmetic products. In a statement, Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the operation was launched following intelligence on the sale of products without MOH approval, marketed via social media platforms. The case is being investigated under Regulations 18A and 7(1)(a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Offenders face fines of up to RM25,000 or three years' jail for the first offence, and RM50,000 or five years' jail for subsequent offences. Companies face higher fines of up to RM100,000. DBKL also issued a notice under Section 26(1)(a) of the Federal Territory (Planning) Act for the unauthorised use of residential premises for business purposes. Police advise the public to be cautious when purchasing health and cosmetic products, and warned social media and e-commerce platform operators against facilitating the sale of unapproved goods. From Jan 1 to July 16, the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence and Investigation Unit (WCB/PSK) under Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department carried out 167 operations nationwide, arresting 300 people for offences including contraband smuggling, controlled goods leaks, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife trafficking, and illegal e-waste processing. The total value of seizures during this period is estimated at RM541 million.
