MIRI (Aug 7): The upgrading project for the Sungai Tujoh Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security Complex (CIQS) in Miri is lagging significantly behind schedule, prompting urgent calls for the Public Works Department (JKR) to accelerate completion efforts.
Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who recently visited the site for a progress briefing, expressed concern over the sluggish pace of work.
'It was reported that the project is 20 per cent behind schedule – with only 25 per cent of the works completed to date, compared to the planned progress of 45 per cent,' Lee noted.
He emphasised that the contractor must make up for the delay promptly, particularly after completing the road remilling and resurfacing works by the end of this month.
'JKR has also been instructed to monitor the project very closely to ensure it is completed on time,' he said.
The CIQS upgrading project, valued at RM3.576 million, is scheduled for completion by December 9 this year.
The project is critical to easing heavy traffic congestion, particularly during festive periods, and includes several infrastructure improvements such as construction of new lanes, addition of 10 immigration counters, installations of public toilets, LED lighting upgrades, and new air conditioning systems.
