Vape sales persist in Perlis despite ban, products worth RM315,900 seized

KUALA LUMPUR: The police Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Intelligence Unit raided two premises selling electronic cigarettes illegally in Kangar, Perlis, seizing goods worth RM315,900 on Friday. Federal police Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said the Integrated Operation Op Taring Alpha 3 was conducted together with the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) in the district. He said the raid followed intelligence and public complaints over the illegal sale of e-cigarettes in the state. "The first raid was carried out in Kampung Baru, Kangar, where 2,083 units of devices and electronic cigarette liquids of various brands worth RM104,150 were seized. "The second raid in Kampung Padang Behor, Kangar, resulted in the seizure of 4,235 units of devices and electronic cigarette liquids of various brands worth RM211,750," he said in a statement. Azmi said the total number of items seized was 6,318 units valued at RM315,900. "MPK issued offence notices and compound offers to the premises caretakers for violations under the Local Government Act 1976. "All the seized items were believed to be intended for sale despite the Perlis government having enforced a ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes and vape liquids since Aug 1," he said. He added that the operation was carried out under the "reform" approach, a collaboration of expertise across various agencies to maximise enforcement effectiveness. "Police together with related agencies will continue to conduct operations periodically to curb the sale of illegal vape and safeguard community wellbeing," he said.

Spurs sign forward Kudus from West Ham on long-term contract

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur have signed forward Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United on a long-term contract, the North London club said late on Thursday. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed but British media reported the deal is worth around £55 million (RM315 million) for the Ghana international, who turns 25 next month. Spurs did not reveal the exact length of the contract but British media reported that Kudus had signed a six-year deal until 2031. "One of the most important parts of why I came here is the project and how the manager (Thomas Frank) sees it, and to develop under him," Kudus said in a statement. "With the history of where he's come from, I've seen the amount of talent he's developed to become great players. It's a big sign of why I wanted to work under him as well." Spurs appointed former Brentford boss Frank in June to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou. Kudus joined West Ham from Ajax Amsterdam in 2023 for around €40 million (RM199 million) and scored 13 goals and registered 12 assists across two league seasons with the club. Though he managed just five goals during West Ham's disappointing league campaign last season, his explosive energy and dribbling prowess could make him a valuable asset for Frank, who is expected to adopt the same counter-attacking system he used at Brentford. Kudus may have some fences to mend when he arrives in the Spurs dressing room. He received a five-match ban and a £60,000 fine for violent conduct after sparking a heated altercation between players during West Ham's game against Spurs last October. - REUTERS

Sarawak eyes 1,500MW solar energy production by 2030

File photo for illustration purposes SIBU (July 1): Sarawak aims to achieve a solar energy production capacity of 1,500 megawatts (MW) by 2030, said Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. He disclosed that the Murum and Bakun dams have been identified as potential sites for future floating solar projects, and added that several keen investors had also been identified. 'The floating solar project at the Batang Ai Dam, with a 50MW capacity, has been operational since December 2024. 'The success of this project has opened up opportunities for the development of other Large Scale Solar (LSS) projects, including floating solar at the Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum dams,' he said. He said this when met by reporters after a ceremony to hand over the accreditation certificate to University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) as the certified Training and Examination Centre for Solar Photovoltaic System Design, here yesterday. In this regard, Julaihi said active participation from the private sector and the public is strongly encouraged to ensure that this target is achieved, thereby strengthening collective efforts toward a clean, safe, and competitive energy future. Additionally, he said the Sarawak government is targeting an electricity generation capacity of 10,000MW by 2030. 'As of now, the total energy we are generating stands at 5,898MW compared to the current demand of 4,897MW.' In his speech earlier, he mentioned that with a generation mix consisting of at least 60 per cent from renewable energy sources like hydro, solar, and biomass, this goal is part of the efforts to achieve Sarawak's aspiration of becoming the 'Battery of Asean'. Julaihi also shared about the Additional and Late Applicant Fund (Alaf) projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan, where the Sarawak government had set aside RM315 million for its implementation. He said from Phase 1 to Phase 4, which is still ongoing, Alaf has benefitted over 21,000 households. 'The Sarawak government has approved RM550 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan to continue implementing Alaf projects, which are expected to benefit over 30,000 rural households,' he added. He also touched on how the amendment to the Electricity Ordinance 2023 has appointed Sarawak Energy as the Single Buyer. 'This amendment aims to facilitate the development and private sector investment in energy generation through renewable sources such as LSS, including floating solar at the Batang Ai Dam.' floating solar project julaihi narawi lead solar energy

Sarawak to continue ALAF project in phases to extend electricity supply to underserved communities

Julaihi speaks to reporters after the handover ceremony for Phase 8 of the LJK Project at Kampung Merdang Lumut in Kota Samarahan. KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 28): The Additional or Late Applicant (ALAF) project will continue to be implemented in phases by the Sarawak government as part of its efforts to extend electricity supply to underserved communities, said State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. He said the initiative has received a total allocation of RM315 million for Phases 1 to 4, which are currently being carried out progressively. 'Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Sarawak government has also approved an allocation of RM550 million to continue implementing the ALAF programme in rural areas across the state in phases,' he told a press conference after the handover ceremony for Phase 8 of the Village Street Lighting (LJK) Project at Kampung Merdang Lumut here today. He explained that the implementation of ALAF is conducted on a rotational basis to ensure equitable distribution, especially for longhouses and villages located in remote and hard-to-reach areas. 'Sarawak is vast, and one of the main challenges lies in its topography, distance, terrain, and various other constraints which require coordination across multiple agencies,' he said. Julaihi also sought to clarify misconceptions held by certain quarters that Sarawak prioritises electricity exports, particularly to Kalimantan, over the needs of its own rural communities. 'Let us not be misled. Electricity exports to Kalimantan have been ongoing since 2016 and are not provided free of charge. Instead, they are sold at tariffs significantly higher than local rates. 'We support our neighbours, but our own people will always remain the priority. That is why ALAF is still ongoing and will continue to be implemented,' he stressed. He further disclosed that Sarawak will supply 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Sabah through a power exchange agreement, with the potential to increase the supply to 50MW or even 80MW, depending on grid stability. 'In addition, we have approved the allocation of no less than 1,000MW of electricity to Singapore via undersea cable, along with another approved supply allocation to Peninsular Malaysia, also not exceeding 1,000MW,' he added. He also revealed that there are plans to supply electricity to Brunei in the future. However, he assured that this will not compromise domestic demand. 'At present, Sarawak is capable of generating up to 5.8 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, compared to current demand of approximately 4.8GW. This leaves us with a sufficient energy reserve margin. 'This clearly shows that we have more than enough to meet our local needs. Rural electrification remains a top priority through ALAF,' he said. ALAF electricity supply julaihi narawi
