GOF seizes RM317k worth of smuggled frozen chicken feet in Padang Besar

KANGAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) intercepted a smuggling operation involving frozen chicken feet worth RM317,520 near the Padang Besar Duty-Free Complex. The seizure occurred last Friday along Jalan Baru Sadao, where officers discovered 2,646 cartons of the illicit goods. Northern Brigade GOF Commander SAC Shahrum Hashim confirmed the operation was conducted by the 18th Battalion under 'Op Taring Wawasan Kedah/Perlis' following a tip-off. Authorities observed a Volvo container lorry transferring cargo to two Thailand-registered pickup trucks before uncovering the frozen poultry products. 'The seized items were believed to be destined for a neighbouring country,' said Shahrum. The confiscation included the lorry and both pickup trucks, raising the total seizure value to RM1.42 million. A 48-year-old local man, identified as the lorry driver, was arrested to assist in investigations. All seized items and the suspect were handed over to the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) for further action. - Bernama

PADANG BESAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) thwarted an attempt to smuggle frozen chicken feet worth RM317,520 into Thailand during an operation near the Jalan Baru Sadao duty-free complex here yesterday. The operation led to the seizure of a Volvo container lorry, two Thai-registered pickup trucks, and the arrest of a man caught transferring the items at the location. GOF Northern Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said a total of 2,646 cartons of frozen chicken feet were found stored in the vehicles. "A 48-year-old man from Penaga, Penang, who was the lorry driver, was arrested during the operation," he said in a statement today. He added that investigations are ongoing to trace the remaining members of the smuggling syndicate believed to be active along the Padang Besar border. The suspect and all seized items have been handed over to MAQIS for further action. The case is being investigated under Section 15(1) of the MAQIS Act 2011. If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to RM100,000, a jail term of up to six years, or both.
