Sabah sports minister Ellron Angin denies role in mining graft scandal
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied receiving a RM530,000 bribe in the alleged mining scandal in the state. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Sabah youth and sports minister Ellron Alfred Angin has denied a news report alleging that he accepted a bribe of RM530,000 in connection with the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Ellron said the accusations in the report by Malaysiakini are 'baseless slander driven by immature political motives to tarnish my reputation and integrity as an elected representative'. 'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 'Think 99 times!': M'sian badminton icon warns buyers after losing RM285k on luxury dream car
FORMER world No. 1 badminton player Tan Boon Heong has issued a heartfelt warning to fellow car enthusiasts after revealing he lost a staggering RM285,000 on a luxury SUV purchase — his dream car, a 2018 Range Rover Sport. In a candid social media post that quickly gained traction online, Tan opened up about the financial reality behind his RM530,000 splurge, urging others to be cautious before following in his footsteps. ALSO READ: M'sian badminton star Ong Yew Sin proposes to Japan's Aya Ohori in dreamy surprise, wins hearts online 'After driving it for a year, I noticed the car's value wasn't holding up well, so I decided to sell it. But by then, the Land Rover hype had already cooled off. Hoping to recover some of his investment, Tan initially listed the vehicle at RM450,000 — already an RM80,000 drop. He said a few friends expressed interest in buying it, claiming they'd go for it 'even if it's slightly overpriced.' 'One friend said he wanted to buy it — even said he'd pay a bit more. But in the end, he ghosted me. Honestly, just all talk. 'I kept lowering the price — RM375k, RM350k, RM345k — still no buyer,' he recounted. 'Then a follower came along, acted all confident about buying it, and even paid a deposit. I was over the moon... but the loan got rejected because he hadn't been repaying the bank on time. 'Now someone has offered RM245k and paid a deposit. Fingers crossed that the loan gets approved. If not, or if the buyer backs out, I might just keep the car as a vintage collection piece. 'To anyone who's thinking of buying a Land Rover — please think 99 times. You'll lose a lot of money. I'm not joking,' he wrote. 'Even after selling it, I still owe the bank RM140k. But at least I'll be free... and hey, I did fulfil my dream. 'Just... paid a heavy price for it in the end,' his post read. His post sparked a wave of responses online, ranging from criticism to financial advice. Some users accused him of poor money management, while others mocked his choices. In a follow-up post on June 28, Tan fired back with a pointed message. 'Lost money buying a car and people say I can't manage finances. You're so good at managing money — are you rich yet?' he wrote. 'Life is all about experiences. Lose money? Just earn it back. 'Why be so hung up over it?' he asked. 'You can't take your money with you when you're gone anyway. 'To sum it up: You only live once — if you don't enjoy life, what's the point? He wrapped it up with a sharp mic drop: 'You laugh at me for being a fool, I laugh at you for never having driven a Range Rover.

Former World No.1 Malaysian Badminton Star Loses RM285K On Range Rover In One Year
Subscribe to our FREE Remember The guy who dominated badminton courts worldwide and, when partnering with Koo Kien Keat, hit World No.1 in men's doubles? The Malaysian legend who won the Asian Games and the All England Championships? Well, turns out being a champion on the court doesn't make you immune to getting schooled by a car purchase. The Dream That Became a Money Pit You know how some people dream of luxury cars? Tan always wanted a Range Rover. You know, those big fancy SUVs that scream 'I've made it!' And honestly, after conquering the badminton world, the guy deserved to treat himself. So when he had the cash, he went for it – dropped RM530,000 on a 2018 Range Rover Sport. That's more than half a million ringgit, folks. Friends Who Weren't Really Friends After driving around for just one year feeling like the champion he is, Tan noticed his fancy ride was The car market basically said 'nah' to Range Rovers, and suddenly his dream car became a financial nightmare. So, the former World No. 1 tried to sell. Started asking for RM450,000 – already a RM80,000 loss, but hey, cut your losses, right? Even his friends said they'd buy it, maybe pay extra because they're buddies with a badminton legend. Then they disappeared. Completely ghosted him. Still Waiting for a Miracle Things got desperate. Tan kept dropping the price – from RM450K to RM345K. Still no takers. Then, a fan showed up, seemed serious, and even paid a deposit. Tan probably thought, 'finally!' But nope – the guy's loan got rejected because his credit was trash. Now? Malaysia's former badminton king has someone willing to pay RM245,000. Do the math – he paid RM530,000, but sold it for RM245,000. That's a loss of RM285,000 in just over a year. Almost 300 grand down the drain. And he's still praying this buyer's loan goes through. If not? He jokes about keeping it as a 'vintage decoration' in his garage. Defiant Response to Criticism But when Tan shared his story publicly, the internet had opinions – and not all of them were sympathetic. Following the viral spread of his Range Rover selling saga, Tan posted a response, addressing critics who questioned his financial management skills. In his latest post on 28 June, Tan wrote: 'Lost money buying a car and people say I can't manage finances. You're so good at managing money, are you rich yet? Actually, most men like to show off – like houses, red wine, etc.' Rather than maintaining his earlier cautionary tone, Tan has now embraced a 'live life to the fullest' philosophy. Life is about experiencing things. If you lose money, just earn it back. Why be so hung up about it? Money can't be taken with you when you die. He concluded with a bold challenge to his critics: 'You laugh at me for being foolish, I laugh at you for never driving a Range Rover.'
