DENVER (KDVR) — While Independence Pass is opening at its earliest date in six years, Rocky Mountain National Park announced Thursday that Trail Ridge Road will likely not reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend. For many, a trip up into the high country and particularly on Trail Ridge Road, marks a successful visit to Colorado during Memorial Day. But having the road closed on the holiday is also far from unheard of: Last year, the roadway reopened after the winter on May 31. The year before, it was May 27. 'Wind has been the main challenge since last week, causing low visibility, snow drifting back over cleared areas, and a thick ice layer beneath drifted snow,' the Rocky Mountain National Park Service posted to Facebook. 'Snow and overnight freezing temperatures are forecast above 10,000 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park over the weekend.' The 11-mile road is located above 11,500 feet, making it the highest continuous paved road in the U.S., cresting at 12,183 feet above sea level, according to the park, with few guardrails and no shoulders. 'Trail Ridge Road historically opens in late May, weather permitting,' the park service says on the Rocky Mountain National Park website. According to the park website, RMNP staff will update the road's recorded phone line, 970-586-1222, when the road status changes. Rocky Mountain National Park will celebrate National Parks Week with free admission on Saturday and interactive activities through April 27 to connect visitors with the great outdoors. Why it matters: Despite ongoing staffing and budget struggles stemming from Trump administration cuts, RMNP is still serving up a full slate of programming, just about an hour's drive from Boulder County. State of play: All national park sites will waive entrance fees on Saturday. Some parks, including Rocky Mountain, will hold additional events throughout the week. This year's theme, National Park Playlist, celebrates "musical connections to national parks and the American story," per the site. Colorado national park to go fully cashless
DENVER (KDVR) — A Colorado national park is officially going cashless for all fee collection. On Monday, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park said it will transition to a fully cashless fee system effective immediately. All visitors must use mobile or electronic payments for entrance, camping and permit fees. 'Transition to electronic payment is safer, reduces transaction times, allows for reservations and prepayment and improves accountability,' said the National Park Service in a press release. All entrance and campground fees, as well as wilderness route permits, can be purchased online. Guests can use the Scan and Pay option on the mobile app by scanning the QR code at the campground spot and completing their payment. 'Cash handling costs include park rangers' time counting money, auditing collections, making bank deposits, storage of payment envelopes and files, and processing paperwork, most of which is remedied through cashless sales. The transition to cashless payments will allow the NPS to redirect cash-processing time and direct costs to other work that directly benefits park visitors,' said NPS. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is near Montrose on the Western Slope. The park is home to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America.
