RM165m in healthcare projects for Penang as Seberang Jaya Hospital begins new chapter in cardiac care
BUTTERWORTH, May 2 — Seberang Jaya Hospital has been named the northern region's primary referral centre for cardiology and paediatric cardiothoracic services, a move aimed at easing pressure on Penang General Hospital and improving access to specialist care. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the upgrade follows the completion of a nine-storey extension at the hospital, significantly expanding its capacity and medical capabilities. 'This will play an important role in decongesting other hospitals in the region,' Dzulkefly said, adding that the enhanced facilities would allow for faster access to complex medical treatment for residents. He was speaking to reporters after the project's handover ceremony today, which Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi also attended. With the new block, Seberang Jaya Hospital now houses 729 beds and 11 operating theatres. The facility is expected to begin operations in stages on May 5. Beyond cardiology and cardiothoracic services, the hospital will host subspecialty departments, including otorhinolaryngology (ENT), paediatric cardiology and rehabilitative medicine, he said. The RM371 million extension project was first commissioned in 2016 under a design-and-build contract managed by the Public Works Department (JKR). Dr Dzulkefly also announced that 17 new projects valued at RM9.42 million will be launched under the federal government's Rolling Plan 5 (RP5) within the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12). A further 19 ongoing projects under RMK10, RMK11 and RP4 of RMK12, with a combined value of RM155 million, are also in progress. Altogether, 36 healthcare projects worth RM165 million are slated for implementation in the state. On another note, the minister flagged delays in several Health Clinic (KK) projects. Among them is the KK3 Bandar Tasek Mutiara, which has been stalled for nearly a year but is now back on track. Another, KK3 Mak Mandin, approved in 2023, has yet to break ground. He also called for faster progress on the RM72 million KK2 Bayan Lepas clinic, which received special funding approval from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. — Bernama

Health Ministry getting 66 new construction projects worth RM2.4b, says Works Minister
BUTTERWORTH, May 2 — The Public Works Department (JKR) is implementing 66 new construction projects for the Ministry of Health (MOH) under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with a total cost of RM2.4 billion. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said JKR, through its Health Works Branch, has also been entrusted with 170 healthcare facility projects nationwide, valued at RM16.47 billion. 'These include 62 projects in the pre-construction (planning) phase estimated at RM4.05 billion, 64 projects in the construction phase worth RM7.88 billion, and 44 completed projects in the post-construction phase involving RM4.54 billion,' he said. He was speaking at the handover ceremony of the Multi-Storey Block Construction Project at Seberang Jaya Hospital here today. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was also present. Nanta added that from 9MP to 12MP, 12 projects worth RM1.31 billion have been implemented in Penang under the Works Ministry. He said for the Penang projects, the pre-construction phase involves five projects estimated at RM139 million, the construction phase includes five projects worth RM781 million, and the post-construction phase covers two projects costing RM396 million. On the Seberang Jaya Hospital project, he said JKR was tasked with it in 2016 under a RM371 million design-and-build contract. The nine-storey block includes a 77 per cent increase in bed capacity — from 413 to 729 — as well as new roads and parking facilities built on the hospital's existing field, measuring 1.32 hectares. He said the project faced delays due to challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. 'The construction adheres to Treasury Circular guidelines and uses the Industrialised Building System (IBS), achieving an IBS score of over 70 per cent,' he added. — Bernama

Pahang gets RM858m for roads, clinics, conservation under 12MP, says state exco
KUANTAN, April 24 — The federal government has allocated more than RM858 million under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for Pahang to implement road infrastructure projects. State Public Works, Transport and Health Committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim said the funds were channelled through the Ministry of Works to implement two road upgrading projects involving allocations of RM100 million and RM124.82 million. He added that RM320 million was also channelled through the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development for five other projects, including the upgrading of Jalan Pos Sinderut in Lipis. 'All these projects are at the Public Works Department design stage,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang here yesterday. On healthcare, Razali said RM28.98 million has been allocated for 40 dilapidated clinics in the state, involving 12 demolish-and-rebuild projects and 28 repair and upgrade works, all of which are underway and expected to be completed by November. In response to complaints that the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh only has six Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, he said the claim was unfounded, adding that the hospital provides critical care services with 18 ICU beds for adults and 31 Neonatal ICU beds for infants. Meanwhile, state Welfare, Women and Family Development Committee chairman Datuk Sabariah Saidan said that, as of March, the Social Welfare Department (JKM) has provided monthly financial aid to 30,456 recipients in Pahang. She said the temporary financial assistance initiative involved an expenditure of over RM14 million and aimed to help individuals or families in need to have a better quality of life. State Local Government, Housing, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff said the state government planned to establish another Seladang Conservation Centre at Jalan Bukit Rengit, Lanchang. 'The Wildlife Department is in the process of applying for funding under the 13MP for the project. If approved, there will be two seladang conservation centres in Pahang, strengthening ex-situ conservation efforts,' he said. He added that the state government would also continue with phase 6 of the Pahang People's Housing programme this year, with a total of 470 housing units to be developed at a value of RM36 million. The sitting resumes today. — Bernama
