Published on: Saturday, August 09, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 09, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Charlayne (right) receives her prize from chairperson Tan Ai-Leen. Kota Kinabalu: Charlayne Chong finished third in the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open which ended on Thursday. Her one-under 218 total also missed the play-off by mere one shot from eventual winner Indonesian Bianca Naomi Laksono and Filipina Samantha Dizon. Advertisement The 23-year-old Sabahan, who just won the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Champion a week ago, continued her fine form on day one. She stunned the field with a 68 in the opening round to take the lead. However, she faltered the following day with a disastrous 80, but managed to make amends on the final day with a 69. Despite the below-par performance on day two, she said she never gave up. Advertisement 'It was a bit of a bummer that my performance dipped on the second day after starting the tournament strong. 'I think I felt a bit of pressure and I just couldn't find my rhythm. Still, I never lost hope. My main goal for this event was to apply what I learned from my previous tournament and to stay in control of my emotions and thoughts, lower my expectations, and take the pressure off. 'I'm proud to say I managed to achieve that goal and as a bonus, I managed to make a comeback and recover on the final day. I may have missed out by just one stroke, but I'm genuinely happy that I stayed calm and composed right up to the last hole. 'Although I was hoping to make the playoffs, I'll take the result proudly as being able to bounce back meant a lot to me,' she said. She also praised the organiser of the tournament and thanked her family, MGA (Malaysia Golf Association), sponsors and all those who have given her the support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Charlayne charges back for third at RSGC Ladies Amateur Open
KUALA LUMPUR: National amateur golfer Charlayne Chong came within a whisker of a playoff at the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open and finished with a commendable third-place finish. The 23-year-old closed with a three-under 70 on Thursday to finish on a one-under 218 total - just one shot shy of leaders Bianca Naomi Laksono of Indonesia and Samantha Dizon of the Philippines. Charlayne, competing in the tournament for the first time, had stormed into the lead with a brilliant opening 68 on Tuesday. However, a disastrous 80 in the second round saw her fall out of contention before she rallied again on the final day - capped by birdies on her last two holes. "The first day went really well, I came in pretty strong and I was really happy with my score," said Charlayne. "But on the second day, things didn't quite go as planned. I think I felt a bit of pressure from the people around me, and I just couldn't find my rhythm. Nothing seemed to work that day. "Thankfully, I managed to bounce back today. I started strong and finished strong - birdie-birdie on the last two holes. That really made up for yesterday's mistakes. "I was hoping to make the playoff, but I'll take this result proudly. Bouncing back today meant a lot." Charlayne admitted that the second round ultimately cost her a shot at something more. "It could have been a better round, no doubt. But that's golf — things don't always go your way." The Sabahan, currently ranked No. 351 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), third highest behind Jeneath Wong (No. 95) and Wang Xin Yao (No. 158), has enjoyed a rich vein of form of late — having won the Kelantan Amateur Open last month and finished runner-up at the Negri Sembilan Amateur Open in June. Meanwhile, it was a case of third time's the charm for Bianca after claiming her first international win by edging Samantha on the second extra hole of a sudden-death playoff, following a tie at two-under 217. Bianca, who led by two heading into the final round, carded a 74 while Samantha returned a 72 to force extra holes. The Indonesian clinched the title by parring the replayed 18th hole against Samantha's bogey. "I'm very excited and happy with the result," said Bianca. "This course is really tough, so this win feels especially sweet for me. "This is my third time playing here, and it's definitely my best achievement. I've won several tournaments back home, but this being my first win outside Indonesia, it feels way bigger. I'll remember this for a long time."

The tournament is set to attract a strong international field, featuring rising talents from across Asia and Asean including Japan, India, Guam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and host country Malaysia. Tournament chairperson Ai-Leen Tan said the championship has earned a reputation as a launching pad for future golf stars, having produced standout names such as Mirabel Ting, the 2023 champion, and Winnie Ng, a two-time winner. "Each year, the tournament showcases players of increasingly higher calibre. "Many have since turned professional, and we're proud to provide a platform that helps them take that next step," she said at a press conference to announce the event. While the full list of Malaysian contenders has yet to be confirmed, Ai-Leen noted that players will be selected through the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA). To ensure a highly competitive field, this year's edition will require participants to have a WHS Handicap Index of 13.4 or lower. "By tightening the handicap requirement, we aim to raise the overall quality of the competition. Top players want to compete with the best, and this change reflects that ambition," she added. The tournament will feature four categories, including the Tuanku Bahiyah Cup (gross individual champion) and the Datin Azian Trophy (gross team champion). Open to female amateur golfers aged 12 and above, entries must be submitted by July 26.
