PHEB awards RM70,200 to Indian SPM top scorers in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 167 high-achieving Indian students in Penang who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination received contributions amounting to RM70,200 from the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB). Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the students, who scored 7As and above across 37 schools, reflect the state government's continued commitment to educational development. 'I believe every young person in Penang has great potential to succeed, provided they remain committed and seize the opportunities for guidance and support available to them. 'The state government continues to prioritise human capital development as outlined in the Penang2030 Vision, with a key focus on enhancing access to quality education for all,' he said during the PHEB Education Carnival for SPM and STPM leavers and the 2024 SPM top scorer appreciation ceremony today. Also present were PHEB chairman RSN Rayer and his deputy, A Lingeshwaran. Meanwhile, Lingeshwaran said this marks the second consecutive year the board has recognised outstanding Indian students in Penang, with each of them receiving RM50 for every A obtained in the SPM examination. He added that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB has channelled a total of RM883,607 towards educational aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance. 'Last year, PHEB received an allocation of RM1.5 million from the state government. This year, the amount has increased to RM2 million. 'We hope these funds will continue to benefit the Indian community in Penang, especially our youth pursuing education,' he said.

Penang woman pleads guilty to reduced charge of infanticide
The High Court ordered the prosecution to prepare a welfare report on M Santhiea, with sentencing fixed for June 30. GEORGE TOWN : A 23-year-old woman, who threw her newborn baby out the window of her apartment unit five years ago, has pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of infanticide at the High Court here. M Santhiea, who was 18 when the offence was committed, was initially charged with murder in 2020. The prosecution offered a reduced charge of infanticide today, citing her mental state following childbirth and the testimonies of several prosecution witnesses. The new charge was framed under Section 309A of the Penal Code, which states that a woman commits infanticide when she causes her newborn's death while suffering from a disturbed state of mind, having not fully recovered from childbirth. The offence is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine upon conviction. Santhiea's lawyer, RSN Rayer, asked for a welfare report on his client to be prepared before sentencing, citing her background as a young first-time offender from a low-income family. Rayer said her parents already faced social stigma while his client continued to endure public shame. 'She should not be sent to prison,' he said. Justice Rofiah Mohamad allowed the request and ordered the prosecution to prepare the welfare report. She set June 30 for sentencing. In 2020, Santhiea was charged with killing her newborn daughter at the Sri Ivory Apartment in Bandar Baru Air Itam at 8.25am on July 10 that year. She was charged at Penang Hospital's maternity ward, where she was receiving treatment for severe blood loss and postnatal complications. Santhiea had spent seven months in detention after being denied bail, before the Court of Appeal ruled that she should be allowed to post bail. The High Court, which presided over the murder trial, eventually set bail at RM90,000 with strict conditions, including a 12-hour home curfew and a ban on leaving the state. The five-day trial began in February with eight witnesses called.

Indian docs perform heart ops on 23 kids in Penang
A GROUP of doctors from India performed heart surgeries on 23 children in two weeks under the Miracle Baby Programme (Second Mission) in Penang, Makkal Osai reported. The doctors from the Sri Sathya Sanjeevani Hospitals group carried out life-saving procedures on the children aged from just a few months up to 12, with local doctors' help. Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) vice-chairman and former director of the Sungai Bakap Hospital, Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran, said the programme began in 2022. This year, it was done at Penang General Hospital with the collaboration of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, he said. PHEB chairman RSN Rayer, who is Jelutong MP, hosted a special event at the Waterfall Temple in Penang to honour the doctors who took part. It helped correct congenital heart diseases in the 23 children from all communities. > A groom walked out of his own wedding in New Delhi after a song reminded him of his ex-girlfriend, the daily also reported. The incident happened when the DJ began playing Channa Mereya from the Hindi film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai. The song, whose title means 'the moon in mine', apparently evoked memories of a previous love, prompting him to call off the wedding immediately. The wedding procession with the bride's family returned home minus the groom. In reaction to the story, which went viral later, the film's director Karan Johar posted an incredulous 'Huh?' on social media. Some commenters thanked the singer Arijit Singh for his emotional rendition of the song that stirred such feelings in the groom. Others, however, slammed the groom for his selfish act and even snidely remarked that he probably thought he was Ranbir. BUTTERWORTH: The Digital Ministry will continue to assist and support digitalisation initiatives at Hindu temples throughout the country. Its minister, Gobind Singh Deo said it was the government's commitment to ensure that digital technology reaches the grassroots, including in the context of religion and cultural heritage so that no one is left behind in the digital mainstream. 'Tonight, we witness another step forward by the Penang Hindu Endowments Board with the launch of the digitalisation system and kiosk that will bring temple management to a more modern and systematic level. 'Devotees and visitors can donate, check scheduled temple ceremonies or register for religious ceremonies easily and quickly, from home or at a kiosk at the temple,' he told reporters after the officiation ceremony of the digitalisation system at Sree Maha Mariamman Temple here today, where he approved RM20,000 in allocations to temple, in the presence of board chairman RSN Rayer. He added that with the digitalisation system, temples would be more transparent and improve their management efficiency and ensure temples would not only be a place of worship, but also a community centre managed well. 'Devotees' trust is important and this system helps to strengthen that. I would like to stress that with digitalisation, it doesn't mean we abandon tradition and values but strengthen them with new and relevant tools. 'Its important how we adapt technological advancement to enrich and conserve our cultural heritage in line with the Malaysia MADANI concept,' he said, and hoped that all Hindu temples in the country would use digitalisation systems.
