PHEB awards RM70,200 to Indian SPM top scorers in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 167 high-achieving Indian students in Penang who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination received contributions amounting to RM70,200 from the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB).
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the students, who scored 7As and above across 37 schools, reflect the state government's continued commitment to educational development.
'I believe every young person in Penang has great potential to succeed, provided they remain committed and seize the opportunities for guidance and support available to them.
'The state government continues to prioritise human capital development as outlined in the Penang2030 Vision, with a key focus on enhancing access to quality education for all,' he said during the PHEB Education Carnival for SPM and STPM leavers and the 2024 SPM top scorer appreciation ceremony today.
Also present were PHEB chairman RSN Rayer and his deputy, A Lingeshwaran.
Meanwhile, Lingeshwaran said this marks the second consecutive year the board has recognised outstanding Indian students in Penang, with each of them receiving RM50 for every A obtained in the SPM examination.
He added that between 2023 and May 2025, PHEB has channelled a total of RM883,607 towards educational aid for students pursuing certificate, diploma and degree programmes, as well as welfare assistance.
'Last year, PHEB received an allocation of RM1.5 million from the state government. This year, the amount has increased to RM2 million.
'We hope these funds will continue to benefit the Indian community in Penang, especially our youth pursuing education,' he said.

Traffic congestion will be managed as big projects roll out, says Penang CM
Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said it was likely that the Penang South Islands project, the Mutiara Line LRT and the construction of the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway would cause traffic congestion but this would only be temporary. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Penang government will implement effective traffic management strategies to minimise disruptions during the construction of upcoming large-scale projects, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said today. Chow acknowledged that projects such as the Penang South Islands (PSI) development, the Mutiara Line LRT, and the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway might lead to temporary traffic congestion, but said this was an expected impact of the development, Bernama reported. 'Many years ago, when our team visited Gamuda in Kuala Lumpur, when they were implementing the LRT project, we were introduced to the various traffic management strategies and a programme that they managed at that time during the construction phase. 'I believe all contractors involved in these major projects in Penang will take traffic dispersal into account. 'The key consideration is to maintain the original number of lanes during construction. 'Even if parts of the road need to be closed to vehicles, additional space must be created to ensure that the same number of lanes remains available,' he said at the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Micci) Northern Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2025. With proper traffic management and patience from all road users, Chow was confident the state government would be able to mitigate the impact and make travelling more comfortable despite the congestion. He also confirmed that the Penang LRT project was expected to begin in the third quarter of this year, with completion projected within six to seven years, and that the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway was scheduled to commence by the end of the year. When tabling the 2025 budget last October, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced several projects in Penang, including the Juru–Sungai Dua Elevated Highway, the Mutiara Line LRT, the expansion of Penang International Airport (LTAPP), and the Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 project. The 29.5km Mutiara Line LRT will feature 21 stations and is designed to enhance connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland, reduce road congestion, and improve overall accessibility. Chow also noted that the state-led Penang South Islands (PSI) project was making progress, with 60.71ha of land already reclaimed over the past 18 months. He said the state government was awaiting 'good news' from the federal government regarding incentive packages for potential purchasers of the land for industrial development. PSI, or Silicon Island, covering a land area of 930.78ha, is a reclamation project owned by the Penang government.

AIM announces additional RM50mil allocation to Indian women entrepreneurs
KUALA LUMPUR: Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) has allocated an extra RM50mil to empower Indian women entrepreneurs through the second phase of the Prosperity Empowerment and A New Normal for Indian Women (PENN 2.0) programme. Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the additional allocation brings the total fund for the programme to RM100mil. He said PENN 2.0 was developed after the success of phase one of the PENN, which benefitted 6,247 Indian women with a total financing amount of RM42,725,640. "From the 6,247 recipients of this fund, a total of 1,062 were new entrepreneurs. Therefore, the announcement of the additional fund allocation of this RM50mil will give opportunities to more Indian women to involve themselves in business and at the same time improve their standard of living,' he said. Ramanan said this at the launching ceremony of PENN 2.0 Empowering Indian Women Entrepreneurs at the AIM headquarters here Tuesday (June 3). PENN, which was launched on April 14 last year, is a government initiative through AIM as the implementing agency to empower Indian women, especially in the field of entrepreneurship. Ramanan said AIM is targeting that over 10,000 Indian women entrepreneurs in the country would benefit from this additional fund. According to him, the target of this fund is not only for new participants but this effort will also strengthen support for existing participants to expand their small businesses in various sectors including food, tailoring, beauty and community services. "Entrepreneurs who have received PENN financing have generally succeeded in increasing their income by 20 to 30 per cent compared to before," he added. Since its establishment in 1987, AlM has disbursed over RM35.9bil to Malaysians (especially women), in its ongoing efforts to liberate the poor and low-income groups from poverty. - Bernama
