Man sentenced to 64 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 30,000 fine for assaulting minor relative
Thiruvananthapuram: A fast track special court on Wednesday sentenced a 45-year-old man to 64 years of rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old default of the payment, the accused shall undergo an additional jail term of eight more years, added Judge R Rekha in her incident happened in 2019 when the girl went to her uncle's house for his funeral. While the funeral ceremonies were taking place, the girl was sitting upstairs alone and the culprit, who is a relative, sexually assaulted her. He also threatened the girl not to disclose the incident to the girl only informed her grandmother that the culprit hugged her and did not reveal more details of the assault. Following this, the grandmother scolded the accused and slapped two years after that, the girl disclosed the incident during a counselling session at school. Soon the school authorities alerted the childline and police. Valiyathura police recorded the girl's statement and registered a court observed that the man does not deserve any mercy as such an act from a relative is unwelcoming and a lenient sentence will motivate such crimes in the behalf of the prosecution, special public prosecutor RS Vijay Mohan and advocate Nivya Robin appeared before the court. As many as 15 witnesses were deposed and 22 documents and four material objects were presented during the trial. Valiyathura station house officers T Girilal and R Prakash investigated the case.

Man sentenced to 47 years rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting minor with Down syndrome
Thiruvananthapuram: The fast-track court on Friday sentenced a 41-year-old man to 47 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl with Down syndrome . Judge R Rekha also imposed Rs 25,000 fine on the convict, who is also a close relative of the survivor. The judgment also stated that failure to pay the fine will result in an additional eight months of imprisonment. The incident happened on Sep 25, 2020, when the girl was alone at home. The girl's elder sister, who arrived there and witnessed the crime, hit the man with a stick lying nearby and chased him away. The survivor also sustained serious injuries in the assault. She later disclosed that she was assaulted by the man on two previous occasions as well. In her judgment, the judge also stated that the crime was particularly heinous as it targeted a child with disabilities and that the accused showed no mercy. "Such an act deserves no leniency," she observed while pronouncing the sentence.
