Gujarat high court refers IIM-A student re-admission dispute to mediation
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Tuesday referred to mediation a dispute between the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and a student seeking re-admission to the its Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) course after his admission was cancelled two years ago.
The petitioner, R Shri Vignesh, had cracked the
Common Admission Test
(CAT) in Dec 2021 after completing his BTech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), and joined IIM-A in July 2022. His admission was conditional on producing his undergraduate marksheets and degree certificate by Dec 2022.
When IIT-M did not issue his documents on time, Vignesh sought more time. IIM-A extended the deadline to Sep 2023, but the documents still did not arrive.
On Sep 14, 2023, IIMA cancelled his admission.

A year later, in Sep 2024, Vignesh finally received the required papers from IIT-M and requested IIM-A to re-admit him so he could finish the remaining six trimesters. His plea was rejected. He approached the Gujarat high court, which in turn asked IIM-A to reconsider. On March 28, 2025, IIMA again refused.
This brought Vignesh back to the high court. After a preliminary hearing, Justice Nikhil Kariel stated, "It would prima facie appear to this court that both the sides may have been justified in their respective stands..."
The court said that the student has completed nearly 70% of the programme and his case should have been considered differently. On the other hand, IIM-A gave numerous extensions to the student for submission of documents.
Yet, the admission process was not completed by the petitioner.
The court further stated that the litigation is not of an adversarial nature, and by acceding to the student's request, the time invested by IIM-A in the student would be fruitful. "Therefore, at this stage, referring the present petition to the mediation committee attached to the high court may be the best course of action," the high court said, while directing the mediation committee to assign a senior mediator to resolve the dispute.
The high court has posted further hearing six weeks later after it receives the report from the mediator.
