Consul General of Russia in Chennai pays courtesy visit to Telangana CM
Hyderabad [Telangana], May 20 (ANI): The Consul General of Russia in Chennai, Valerii Khodzhaev, paid a courtesy visit to Telangana Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy. J Snehaja, Regional Passport Officer, Hyderabad was also present at the occasion. In a post on X, the Chief Minister's Office stated, 'The Consul General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, HE Mr. Valerii Khodzhaev, paid a courtesy visit to the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Shri Revanth Reddy, at his residence in Jubilee Hills. Smt. J. Snehaja, Regional Passport Officer, Hyderabad was also present on the occasion.' The meeting came as Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, claimed that the West was allegedly trying to fracture India-Russia-China relations, RT India stated on May 16. 'Western policy in the region is an attempt to create a 'clash' between 'our great friends and neighbours India and China,' he said, RT India reported. 'What is happening right now in the Asia-Pacific region, the West has begun to call it the Indo-Pacific region in order to give its policy a clear anti-Chinese direction, hoping to thereby additionally gain the opportunity to pit our great friends and neighbours India and China against each other. Recently, President Putin recalled that it's simply a divide-and-rule policy,' he said. Ever since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russia and China are fostering closer ties, as Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 8 told Russian leader Vladimir Putin that his country will stand with Moscow against 'unilateralism and hegemonic bullying' during a visit to the country to commemorate the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, Al Jazeera reported. Xi hailed the 'deeper' trust developing between the two countries, appearing to take a swipe at Western critics of Russia's continuing offensive in Ukraine, which Putin has characterised as a war against latter-day Nazis, as per Al Jazeera. Meanwhile, ever since Trump took office, Russia-US ties have improved significantly. On March 18, US President Donald Trump held a crucial phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to secure a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. The Trump administration is pushing for an immediate halt to hostilities after Ukraine agreed to a temporary cessation of fighting, provided Russia does the same, ABC News reported. (ANI)

X restores RT India account after brief suspension
Social media platform X has reinstated the English-language account belonging to RT's India branch, days after it was suspended for 'impersonating' RT – a claim the channel has denied. The suspension notice sent to RT India on Tuesday stated that the account had allegedly violated the platform's rules. The channel questioned the move in a post on X, suggesting that RT India was 'not impersonating anyone' as it is a legitimate part of RT. The channel then expressed hope that the situation was 'a simple misunderstanding.' In another post, RT asked the platform's owner, Elon Musk, to intervene. After its account was restored on Friday, RT India, along with thousands of its followers, thanked Musk. 'Freedom of speech, perhaps, really does exist!' the channel said in a post. ⚡️🇮🇳🇷🇺 RT India is Back, Baby!Freedom of speech, perhaps, really does exist! Thanks to @X & @elonmusk for restoring our account. And a massive thank you to everyone following our the fun continue. 😎 — RT_India (@RT_India_news) February 14, 2025 The incident comes months after the US imposed harsh sanctions against RT, its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, and several network executives, branding the channel a tool of Russian government propaganda. READ MORE: Why the world's largest democracy isn't buying 'freedom of speech' US-style The US State Department has accused RT of playing a major role in eroding support for Ukraine around the world. Following the sanctions, Meta – which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – banned RT and several other Russian outlets from its platforms globally, including in India. Following the sanctions, the US State Department announced a 'joint diplomatic campaign' to be implemented in concert with Canada and the UK 'to rally allies and partners around the world to join us in addressing the threat posed by RT and other machinery of Russian disinformation and covert influence.' Reports in the Indian media then suggested that Washington had reached out to New Delhi regarding imposing a block on RT in India; however, the Indian government was reluctant to back Washington's efforts. 'When non-Western countries place curbs on their own media or suppress dissent, the US is quick to condemn this as a breach of democracy. Even in situations of breaches of law and order, rioting, and violence, when curbs are temporarily placed on social media and the internet, the US is quick to denounce them,' Kanwal Sibal, a former Indian foreign secretary and RT columnist, claimed at the time.

Social media platform X has suspended the English-language account belonging to RT's India branch. The suspension notice sent to RT India on Tuesday stated that the account had allegedly violated the platform's rules. According to a statement posted on RT's main X account, RT India has been accused of unlawfully 'impersonating' RT, a claim the channel has denied. The post was accompanied by a screenshot of the suspension notice, in which X accused RT India of 'violating X rules against inauthentic accounts' and informed the branch that it 'may not misappropriate the identity of individuals, groups, or organizations or use a fake identity to deceive others.' In a later post, RT announced that 'sadly, we have not yet got a response to rectify this obviously unjust situation with RT India' from X moderators and asked the platform's owner, Elon Musk, to intervene. READ MORE: RT begins broadcasting in Serbian RT has faced pressure from the West for years. Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, many major Western broadcasters stopped airing RT channels. The EU placed a comprehensive ban on the channel and imposed sanctions on ANO TV-Novosti, RT's parent organization. The UK, France, and Germany froze the accounts of RT's branches in their countries and closed their bureaus. RT's online presence also suffered, with Google blocking RT sites from recommended services, YouTube removing RT accounts, and TikTok and Telegram blocking them across the EU, US, and Canada. The pressure on the channel intensified further last year, when the US imposed sweeping sanctions against RT, its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, and several top executives, branding the channel a tool of Russian government propaganda. The US State Department has accused RT of playing a major role in eroding support for Ukraine around the world. Following sanctions, Meta – which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – banned RT and other Russian state-linked media outlets from its apps globally over what the company called 'foreign interference activity.' RT has taken the crackdown in its stride, and editor-in-chief Simonyan has pledged that the channel will 'find ways to bypass' sanctions and bans. The outlet recently launched its new RT Balkan TV Channel, which started broadcasting from Belgrade in December last year.
