Shoojit Sircar On Raanjhanaa's AI Altered Ending: ‘The Vision Has To Be Protected'

The re-release of Aanand L Rai's Raanjhanaa, starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, has sparked major controversy over its AI-altered climax. The filmmaker and Dhanush are reportedly considering legal action against the production for failing to obtain approval from the script's authorised owners before rewriting the ending using AI. Originally released in 2013, Raanjhanaa had become one of the most memorable love stories of its time. In the latest development, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar has shared his views on the interference of AI in art.
In an interview with Zoom, Shoojit Sircar remarked that artistes across various fields are struggling to safeguard their craft. Speaking about the controversy, he said, 'I haven't seen Raanjhanaa, but have heard what they've done to it. The fight has always been that every filmmaker in this country, every art and talent, has to be protected."
Shoojit Sircar On Threat Of AI In Film Industry
Shoojit Sircar added, 'Their vision has to be protected. All our lives go into protecting our art. Somebody is not critical about it, someone is not shattering it." He mentioned that while he cannot comment on what they have done to Raanjhanaa, but was sure that they are fighting to safeguard the artistic and free expression rights. 'If someone has a vision, everyone in the industry must safeguard it. The struggle is to protect it. Efforts should be taken towards that and not to dismantle it," he concluded.
Raanjhanaa Alternate Ending Explained
Raanjhanaa, starring Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhasker, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and others, was both a critical and commercial success. In the original climax, Dhanush's character, Kundan, dies after being betrayed by Zoya, played by Sonam. However, in the AI-altered version, Kundan regains consciousness after the betrayal.
Directed by Aanand L Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma, Raanjhanaa was released on June 21, 2013, followed a week later by its Tamil-dubbed version, Ambikapathy. A spiritual sequel titled Tere Ishk Mein is set to release on November 28 this year.
