Exact cost of Rangers injury crisis revealed as payments to crocked stars double that of Celtic

A study has found that the Ibrox club paid over £1.4million to injured stars last season as Scottish Prmeiership clubs ranked A new study has found that Rangers paid the most money to injured players last season - more than double the amount of Celtic. Research carried out by Footy Accumulators analysed every Scottish Premiership player that missed matches through injury or illness last season to calculate how much they were paid whilst out of action. ‌ Using each player's salary (as per Capology and Salary Sport) to determine their daily income and then multiplied by number of days and games missed, the league total comes to a cool £3,561,957 – with the Ibrox side along contributing over £1.4million of that. ‌ Gers shelled out £1,434,160 to sidelined stars - comfortably most in the league.. It's perhaps not surprising that Celtic are second in the table given their comparatively massive wage bills in relation to the rest of the division. But the Hoops spent just over half of what their rivals did, their total coming in at £787,123. Hearts were next in just over £400,000 then Aberdeen at less than half that again. Dundee United got the most bang for their buck as the Tangerines paid less than £20k in wages while players were injured last term. Rabbi Matondo' s injury was the most costly to Rangers. The Welsh winger missed 92 days with a hamstring injury that cost the club £301, 458 in wages. ‌ Ridvan Yilmaz being out 166 days was another costly absence at £283,792 while Danilo's knee injury came in at £240,767 over 65 days. The winger is yet to make a consistent mark at international level - but says Craig Bellamy is the man to get the best out of him. Update: Date: 19:14 BST Title: 'There's no easy games these days' Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) Danny GabbidonFormer Wales defender on BBC Radio Wales Sometimes these 'lesser' teams can be difficult, most of these international teams now are at a minimum well organised and technically at a decent level. There's no easy games these days, it's all down to Wales and how they perform and getting the game plan right. Update: Date: 19:13 BST Title: Bellamy calls for patient Wales Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) This video can not be played Wales boss Craig Bellamy calls on his players to be patient in breaking down Liechtenstein Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has called on his players to be patient in breaking down Liechtenstein. Bellamy expects a similar test to the one posed by Kazakhstan in March where his side held a nervy 2-1 lead until Rabbi Matondo's first international goal in the 90th minute sealed three points. Update: Date: 19:11 BST Title: Post Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) Nathan BlakeFormer Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales I fully expect Wales to score at least three or four goals this evening and win quite comfortably. Craig said himself he expects to win, but saying and doing are two different things. Update: Date: 19:10 BST Title: How it stands in Group J Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) This is one of two games in World Cup qualifying Group J this evening, with top seeds Belgium belatedly starting their campaign with a trip to North Macedonia. Wales are currently second, behind North Macedonia on goal difference, with Kazakhstan in third courtesy of a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein, who are yet to get off the mark having also lost 3-0 at home to the North Macedonians in March. Wales, remember, won their group opener against Kazakhstan 3-1 on this ground before drawing in Skopje courtesy of that dramatic late goal by David Brooks. Update: Date: 19:09 BST Title: Wales have outside chance of winning group - Earnshaw Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) Robert Earnshaw believes Wales have a chance of beating Belgium to top spot in their World Cup qualifying group – but says victory tonight is essential if they are to make that happen. Wales go to Belgium on Monday for what is on paper their toughest fixture in Group J. Wales will travel with some confidence having gone eight games unbeaten under Craig Bellamy - but the first task is to overcome Liechtenstein this evening. 'It's a must-win because when you look at the group, North Macedonia, they're on four points as well and of course almost beat Wales in the last game,' Earnshaw told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. 'Belgium are now going to start their campaign and obviously they're the favourites to win it. 'But Wales I think will have that outside spot of really pushing this group. I think Wales can actually win it, but Belgium will be the favourites.' Update: Date: 19:07 BST Title: Pre-match numbers Content: Wales v Liechtenstein (19:45 BST) Like your pre-match stats? Max Goppel, Livio Meier, Ferhat Saglam and Fabio Luque Notaro come in for Felix Oberwald, Kenny Kindle, Villiam Pizzi and Dennis Salanovic. Liechtenstein: Buchel; Traber, Wieser, Hofer; Meier, Luchinger, Hasler, Sele, Goppel; Saglam, Luque Notaro. Subs: Lo Russo, Ospelt, Beck, Malin, Netzer, Schadler, Kindle, Wolfinger, Zund, Weissenhofer, Pizzi. Rangers ‘probably can't afford' to pay off forgotten £3m star – so he may have a future after all, says Kris Boyd

Will the new manager give him a chance? STAYING PUT? Rangers 'probably can't afford' to pay off forgotten £3m star – so he may have a future after all, says Kris Boyd Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT promises to be a summer of change at Ibrox with new owners, a new manager and new players. But could some stars remain at the club despite looking like they were on the road out? Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Rabbi Matondo scored his first international goal for Wales this year Credit: Reuters 2 But his future with Rangers remains uncertain Credit: Kenny Ramsay The current Rangers squad is in need of an overhaul and already several players have departed upon the expiration of their contracts. Cyriel Dessers has been linked with a move abroad and there could also be serious interest in Nicolas Raskin as the summer progresses. However, certain fringe players are on hefty deals and they could prove problematic to move on. That's the view of former Rangers star and SunSport columnist Kris Boyd. One such example is Rabbi Matondo. The Welsh winger spent the second half of last season on loan at Hannover. He has struggled to make a consistent impact in Scotland since his £3m arrival from Schakle in 2022. And despite an impressive start to life at Hannover his season petered out with a whimper. And Boyd thinks he could prove difficult to shift off the wage bill for Gers. He told Top Rated Bingo Sites: "The thing is you never know because he is under contract and it is easy to say their time is up and they have to move on but when you are under contract, the club probably can't afford to pay it off. Kris Boyd says Rangers players were in SHOCK that 'ghost goal' against Hibs wasn't given "I'm not just talking about Rabbi Matondo, but there's others in the same boat. "There'll be a new manager coming in, so you just never know what way they are going to play. "We've seen in other seasons that Rabbi Matondo can be a threat and cause teams problems. "He has struggled to do it on a consistent basis and that may be one of the reasons Rangers have been inconsistent because a lot of their players have been inconsistent. "Some of them have found levels for some weeks but then disappeared in other weeks. "Rabbi Matondo has been out on loan, and it hasn't worked for him." Boyd added: "I'm sure Rangers would have hoped for him to go out on loan and recoup some of the money they paid for him, but it is not to be. "We've seen it before when players go out on loan and think 'that's it, it's done and we are going to move on' but with everything changing at Ibrox in the summer, he might come back and produce the goods. "If he is going to do that then he will have to do a lot more than what he has produced in recent seasons." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
