"Assassin's Creed" Live-Action Series in Works

Yara Sameh The long-gestating 'Assassin's Creed' live-action series adaptation is moving forward at Netflix. The news comes nearly five years after it was first reported that the streaming giant was developing a series version of the global hit video game franchise under a deal with game publisher Ubisoft. The project has gone through multiple creative teams in that time, with Roberto Patino and David Wiener now set as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. In addition to Wiener and Patino, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill of Ubisoft Film & Television serve as executive producers, as does Matt O'Toole. The first 'Assassin's Creed' game debuted in 2007 and became an instant hit, with over 230 million copies of the various titles in the franchise having been sold to date. There have been 14 installments in the main franchise so far, with the most recent being 'Assassin's Creed: Shadows,' released in 2025. A film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016. The official logline for the show states that it is 'centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind's future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity's destiny.' The 'Assassin's Creed' games explore the war between the rival secret orders of the Assassins and the Templars as they use advanced machines to access the genetic memories of Assassins in different periods of the past to track down powerful artifacts called Pieces of Eden. This will be the first live-action series produced under the Netflix-Ubisoft deal. Previously, the two companies partnered on the animated show 'Rabbids Invasion' as well as 'Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.' Fans of nostalgic family dramas will also lose The Wonder Years (Seasons 1 to 2), which is being pulled as part of a broader Disney Television removal. These removals are largely due to expiring licensing deals and content rotations that happen behind the scenes. But there's more to it this time – with a brand new Netflix home screen redesign just around the corner. The streaming giant is launching its first major redesign for TVs in 12 years. Dubbed 'Eclipse' inside the company, the new interface promises a sleeker, simpler experience that encourages viewers to press play faster and discover content more easily. The layout will shift the main navigation bar to the top of the screen and reduce the number of visible titles at once, focusing instead on bigger images, more dynamic previews and video clips that auto-play after just a few seconds. 'The real goal of this is, how do we make it easier, how do we make it simpler, faster for you to make a great decision?' said Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix. One of the most notable features is 'responsive recommendations.' These will tailor suggestions almost instantly, based on what users are actively searching for. So if a viewer looks up thrillers or family films, their home screen will begin updating in real time to show more titles in that category – a big improvement from the previous system, which could take up to a day to refresh. Eunice Kim, the company's chief product officer, said the redesign is meant to serve both types of viewers: those who know exactly what they want, and those who don't. 'The way that the old home page is built, you kind of see box art, box art, box art, box art,' she said. 'It's kind of suboptimal, right?' The new layout aims to slow viewers down just enough to take notice of what's on offer, with titles now showing labels like 'highly rewatched,' '13 weeks in Top 10,' or 'Oscar nominee.' The changes also aim to make live content more prominent – like football games or special events – by showing live animation and movement directly on the home screen. July will also see the departure of several films, including The Equalizer 3 starring Denzel Washington, which is also leaving on July 1. Later in the month, the comedy Dumb Money will exit the platform as well. Overall, at least nine Netflix Originals are scheduled to depart in July, with more likely to follow throughout the year – joining the 250+ titles already gone. Netflix's redesign could have ripple effects across the industry. For years, rival streamers like Disney+, Prime Video, and Max have taken cues from Netflix's interface. With Netflix now breaking from the row-upon-row layout, others may soon follow suit.

Beloved kids' TV channel shuts down after 17 years on screens as gutted fans mourn the 'end of an era'

A beloved kids' TV channel shut down on Tuesday after 17 years on our screens. Gutted fans of Pop Max mourned the 'end of an era' after a final farewell from the broadcaster, which was created back in 2008 by CSC. The channel, which featured on Sky, Freeview and Freesat, first aired on May 19 and was actually called Kix. Kix was rebranded a number of times, including using the new name of Kix! and then in August 2017 it was renamed Pop Max. The target audience of the channel were young boys aged six to nine. And viewers enjoyed the likes of Rabbids Invasion, Beyblade, Dragon Ball Z and Trolls: The Beat Goes On. It comes after Pop Max was removed from Freeview back in 2024. But it's not all bad news as Pop Max's programmes will still be able to watch through the channel's app. Many rushed to social media to share their heartbreak over the news. 'One wrote on X: 'Yet another UK TV channel's about to be shut down for good soon, and this time it's Pop Max this coming Tuesday, which originally launched as Kix. I'm sure those who watched the channel a lot will miss it most.' 'Goodbye Pop Max, you lived a good life.' Another said on YouTube: 'Pop max 2018 (we will miss you).' 'As much as I want to geek out about this channel, I won't. I WILL say that Pop Max has been a remarkable part of my childhood, even way back when it was called KIX. I revisited it as well as the other two Pop channels throughout late 2020-2023 and have quickly become my favourites again. 'To see its downfall in late 2023 to the state we're at now with its upcoming closure is a huge shame, but who couldn't see this coming? All in all, the channel will be missed.' 'End of an era with Kix and Pop Max.' 'Can't say I'm surprised though. Taking it off Freeview back in December was the final nail in the coffin.' It doesn't stop there as Pop Plus and Pop HD are also going to be removed from Sky. Pop Max has a list of sister channels. Pop launched on 29 May 2003 and had a target audience of youngsters aged six to 10. While Tiny Pop - which was aimed at children aged seven and under - was a channel for 21 years after launching in September 2003. It was relaunched in August 2024. Then Pop Girl was created for young girls aged seven to 12, airing between 2007 and 2015. Tiny Pop and Pop+1 will still be able to be enjoyed on air, with Tiny Pop on channel 614, and Pop+1 on channel 618 on satellite.
