Why Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) could mean a long weekend in Dubai

There's another UAE public holiday coming up next month, and it looks like it's going to be a big one. Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) is set to arrive in the first week of September and give us not only a day off work but a long weekend too. It is one of several UAE public holidays that rely on the Islamic Hijri calendar to be determined, with Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) falling on the 12th day of the month of Rabi Al Awwal every year. Islamic months are based on cycles of the moon and are not confirmed until closer to the date, but can be predicted in advance. Dates will shift around the calendar by between 10 and 12 days every year. Rabi Al Awwal is the third month in the Hijri calendar, and we will only know which date Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) will fall on once we know when the month of Safar has ended. (Credit: Canva) Current astronomical predictions indicate that the holiday should fall on Friday September 5, and, when combined with Saturday and Sunday, will mean a three-day long weekend for most UAE residents. And if Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) happens to fall a day early, then it's likely that Dubai residents will still enjoy a long weekend due to the UAE public holiday law. The law states that official public holidays, such as Islamic New Year, Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) and UAE National Day, can be moved to the beginning or the end of the week. Which means that if Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (PBUH) officially falls on Thursday September 4, then the public holiday will likely be moved to Friday September 5. The UAE's next long weekend might be closer than you think

News by Sarah Joseph July 3, 2025 Before the UAE National Holiday, another one-day holiday for residents can be closer than you think. One of the key dates in the 2025 UAE public holiday calendar is the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (PBUH), which falls on the 12th day of the Islamic month of Rabi' Al-Awwal. The birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will be the next public holiday in the UAE. Believed to be on Rabi Al Awwal 12, residents will get an extra one-day off, potentially leading to a long weekend in September. The next public holiday in the UAE is expected to be the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), likely falling on September 4 or 5, 2025. Thanks to a new law allowing holiday shifts, residents could enjoy a relaxing three-day weekend. When is Prophet Muhammad's Birthday in 2025? If Rabi' Al-Awwal begins on Monday August 25, then the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (PBUH) should fall on Friday September 5. This would give Dubai residents a three-day long weekend when combined with Saturday and Sunday. However, if Rabi' Al-Awwal begins on Sunday August 24, then Prophet Muhammad's birthday (PBUH) should fall on Thursday September 4. This would give Dubai residents an additional day off during the working week. When are the next holidays? This being said, more holidays are set to come later in the year, including Commemoration Day and National Day in early December. – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and Instagram Images: Supplied & Feature Image: Abu Dhabi Mosque

Next UAE public holiday: Residents likely enjoy a 3-day weekend soon

The birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will be the next public holiday in the UAE. Believed to be on Rabi Al Awwal 12, residents will get a one-day holiday for the occasion. Rabi' Al Awwal in 2025 is expected to begin on Sunday, August 24 and end on September 22, according to the Islamic calendar. If the month starts on August 24, then the Prophet Muhammad's birthday should fall on Thursday, September 4. If the month begins on Monday, August 25, then the Prophet Muhammad's birthday should fall on Friday, September 5. This would give UAE residents a three-day long weekend when combined with their weekends — Saturday and Sunday. The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is based on lunar sightings, meaning the phases of the moon determine its months. Each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. The Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the dates of Islamic months shift earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. Can holidays be moved? According to a resolution introduced in 2025, except for the Eid breaks, all other holidays can be moved to the beginning or end of the week if they fall on a weekend. This can be done only through a UAE Cabinet decision. The local government in each Emirate may also announce additional holidays as deemed necessary.
