Emmerdale icon returning to TV a whopping 26 years on from explosive exit and quitting showbiz to become a teacher

Former Emmerdale star Glenda McKay is making a return to acting - 26 years after her character was dramatically killed off and she walked away from showbiz to become a schoolteacher. The actress, now 54, famously played Rachel Hughes, the mother of Joe Tate, in the ITV soap for over a decade from 1988 to 1999. Glenda, who joined the cast at just 17 alongside her real-life brother Craig McKay, 52, stepped away from the spotlight shortly after her character's shocking death. But now, she's set to return to TV screens - this time swapping the Yorkshire Dales for the cobbles of Coronation Street. A source told The Sun: 'Glenda is making an acting comeback 13 years after she was last on TV. They continued: 'She'll be playing a social worker called Alison Hale who deals with Tim and Sally. 'Just as she arrives to tell them they're set to foster the Michealis children, a shocking incident happens that throws everything into chaos.' ITV confirmed to the Daily Mail that Glenda will make a guest appearance in one episode as a visiting artist. Glenda's Emmerdale exit remains one of the soap's most unforgettable moments. Her character Rachel was pushed off a cliff by her abusive partner, schoolteacher Graham Clark (played by Kevin Pallister), during a chilling confrontation. Reflecting on her departure at the time, Glenda said: 'I've been at Emmerdale for 11 years, so it is a big change, but there comes a time when you have to go. 'I have other strings to my bow, and now seems like the right time to put them to the test.' After stepping away from acting, Glenda retrained as a teacher and largely stayed out of the spotlight. More than a decade later, she returned to the Emmerdale set - not as a cast member, but as a visitor, bringing her class along for a behind-the-scenes tour. She told the Ilkley Gazette at the time: 'The children were delighted to meet Chris Chittell, who answered all their questions about what it is like to be famous and what is involved in being a soap actor. She continued: 'It really was quite a trip for the class and I was delighted that they all behaved well and represented their school with pride. 'They also all appreciated how fortunate they were and were genuinely bowled over by their experience.' Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1.

Seven Iranians appear in UK court on assault charges after embassy protest

LONDON — Seven Iranian men have appeared in court in the UK after being charged with assaulting a pro-government protestor outside Tehran's embassy in London last week. The men, aged between 30 and 50, were charged with grievous bodily harm after two people were allegedly attacked near the embassy on Friday morning. The defendants' lawyers told Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday that the seven men were opponents of Iran's government and had received threats before the incident, according to UK media reports. Prosecutor Rachel Hughes said the defendants had been taking part in a pro-royalist protest outside the Iranian embassy against the current government in Tehran. An Iranian flag was placed on the ground and one man "knelt and kissed that flag before running off with it", Hughes told the court. "All the defendants chased after the victim and participated in an attack over a six-minute period," she said. The victim suffered serious injuries including broken ribs, a broken ankle and a suspected bleed on the brain and remains in hospital, Hughes told the court. The defendants were refused bail ahead of their next court appearance at Southwark Crown Court on 21 July, media reported. The incident happened a week after Israel launched its surprise attack on Iran, which sparked a daily exchange of missile and drone fire between the two regional rivals. A truce in the 12-day conflict was announced early on Tuesday morning by US President Donald Trump after Tehran launched a limited missile attack on a US military base in Qatar on Monday in response to Washington's strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. However, the ceasefire reportedly faltered just hours later when Israel vowed to retaliate after saying that Iran launched missiles into its airspace in violation of the agreement. Iran's military denied firing on Israel, according to state media, but explosions and sirens sounded across northern Israel mid-morning on Tuesday. — Euronews

The seven men, aged between 30 and 50, are charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to one person outside the Iranian embassy on Friday. Their lawyers told Westminster Magistrates' Court that the seven defendants were opponents of the Iranian government and had been threatened before the incident. Prosecutor Rachel Hughes said: "The defendants were protesting outside of the Iranian embassy against the current Iranian regime as part of a pro-royalist protest, in which they had placed the Iranian flag on the ground. Hughes said the complainant remains in hospital with serious injuries including broken ribs, a broken ankle and a suspected bleed on the brain. Judge Daniel Sternberg denied the seven defendants bail ahead of their next court appearance at Southwark Crown Court on July 21. Monday's court hearing comes amid heightened conflict in the Middle East and after the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday. The last heir to the Iranian monarchy – whose father, the U.S.-backed shah, was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution – on Monday urged Western states to accept the collapse of the Iranian government was necessary to deliver peace and stability.
