Seychelles and Sweden satisfied with level of cooperation and ready to elevate bilateral relations to greater heights

H.E. Caroline Vicini, outgoing Ambassador of Sweden to Seychelles, paid a farewell visit to Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy, on Monday 5th May 2025. During their meeting, Minister Radegonde expressed gratitude for Sweden' support to improve regional maritime security through its participation in EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA, a mission that continues to play a critical role in countering piracy in the Indian Ocean. The Minister highlighted the importance of the United Nation's adoption of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) in 2024, an important development to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to gain access to more affordable financing. Ambassador Vicini informed that her Government is ready to share expertise on sustainable port development with Seychelles, an area where Sweden has made significant progress. Additionally, both diplomats expressed interest in finalising a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement to strengthen cooperation in addressing transnational crimes. As a farewell gesture, Ambassador Vicini announced that she will donate a collection of children's books to the Seychelles National Library. Minister Radegonde expressed his appreciation for Ambassador Vicini's contributions during her tenure and conveyed his best wishes in her future endeavours. Seychelles and Egypt heighten diplomatic ties through official visit in Cairo by Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism

Seychelles and Egypt signed a Visa Waiver Agreement for diplomatic and Official passport holders during the weekend in Cairo, Egypt. This was on the margin of a two-day official visit of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, H. E Badr Abdelatty, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Affairs from 5th to 6th April 2025. During a bilateral meeting, the two parties discussed the possibility of also extending the visa waiver to ordinary passport holders. They also held discussions on several areas of mutual interest such as climate change, maritime security. The Egyptian minister has reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to continue to support Seychelles in its capacity building efforts. Minister Radegonde also held discussions with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar. Their discussions centred on cooperation in the health sector, including training, the recruitment of medical practitioners and the procurement of pharmaceutical products from Egypt. Minister Radegonde has also had discussions with the Minister for Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Ahmed Issa. Both Ministers have expressed their interest in exploring new opportunities for collaboration in the field of training and hospitality staff exchanges, During the visit, Minister Radegonde also visited the three Seychellois presently incarcerated in Egypt and held discussions with the Assistant Minister of Interior for Community Protection, Major General Hazen Ezzel-Arab. Minister Radegonde was accompanied on this visit by Ambassador Conrad Mederic and senior officials from the Foreign Affairs Department. Minister Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism led the Seychelles delegation at the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, taking place from 12th to 13th February in Addis Ababa at the African Union Headquarters. In his intervention on the Permanent Representatives Committee Report, Minister Radegonde expressed Seychelles' sincere appreciation for the donation of USD 200,000 towards the country's recovery efforts following the disasters of December 2023. The Minister touched on the importance of the blue economy for Seychelles, stating that it is more than a concept– it is a conduit for innovation and diversification, while ensuring the preservation of our rich marine environment. He also recognised that the Continent is a distance from achieving the targets set out in Agenda 2063 and that all parties need to collectively work together to maximise the impact of continental projects. Minister Radegonde also cast Seychelles' votes during the election of four Commissioners of the African Union Commission. Representatives from the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Republic of South Africa, Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Republic of Ghana were elected. On the margins of the Executive Council Meeting, Minister Radegonde met with H.E. Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriate Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The two Ministers discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations in key areas of cooperation, notably tourism, healthcare, investment, and trade. They agreed to pursue these endeavours through knowledge-sharing practices, capacity building and exchange of experts between the two countries. Minister Radegonde reiterated Seychelles' strong interest in concluding the visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders. He also stressed the need to conclude the negotiations for ordinary passport holders to further cement the people-to-people relations between the Seychelles and Egypt. The Egyptian Minister also took the opportunity to present, once again, Dr. Hanan Morsy, the Egyptian candidate for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for the elections to be held during the Assembly of the Union on 15th February 2025. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr Sylvestre Radegonde, received a delegation from the SADC Electoral Advisory Council on Thursday 6th February 2025 at Maison Queau de Quinssy. The head of delegation, Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Electoral Advisory Council, Mrs Jennifer Chiriga, informed Minister Radegonde that the mission aimed to review the status of the implementation of SADC Electoral Observation Missions (SEOM) recommendations for the past three elections (2015, 2016, 2020) held in Seychelles. She noted that it is routine for the SEAC post-election review missions to engage with the Electoral Management Body and key stakeholders in Member States to assess the rate of and challenges to the implementation of recommendations made over the previous elections. Minister Radegonde conveyed the Government's appreciation for the SEAC's continued support and guidance as work is being done to strengthen Seychelles' electoral framework and gave assurances that the Government remains committed to implementing the necessary reforms to ensure that elections are conducted in line with the best practices.
