44 MLAs ready to form Manipur government: NDA group to governor

Photo/Agencies IMPHAL: A group of 10 MLAs led by BJP's Thokchom Radheshyam met Manipur governor Ajay Bhalla on Wednesday to convey their readiness to form a govt in the state which has been under President's Rule since Feb. The group claimed support of 44 NDA legislators. Independent MLA Sapam Nishikant Singh spoke in the same vein. The 44 MLAs mentioned by Radheyshyam include 30 of 37 BJP legislators, including former CM N Biren Singh; six NPP MLAs; all five NPF MLAs; the lone JD(U) MLA; and two of three Independents. The seven remaining BJP legislators, two Kuki People's Alliance members and one Independent, all belonging to the Kuki-Zo community, are not part of this group. The 60-member Manipur assembly currently has 59 MLAs, with one seat vacant due to the death N Kayisii, who represented Tadubi constituency. Opposition Congress has five members. While BJP refrained from commenting on the development, there were indications that the group of 10 could not have acted unilaterally. Radheshyam was vague on whether the initiative for the meeting with the governor had been sanctioned by the BJP brass. "The central leadership of BJP will take the decision," he quipped. Significantly, he revealed that Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh has "individually and jointly" sounded the 44 MLAs and that there is no one who opposes the formation of a new govt. "We are ready to stake a claim to form a govt," he added. "People have faced so my hardships. In the previous term, two years were lost due to Covid, and in this term, another two years have been lost due to the conflict," said Radheshyam, emphasising the need for the return of a political dispensation in Imphal. The development comes amid intense protests in the Imphal Valley over an order by security forces to conceal the state's name - Manipur - on the windshield of a govt bus. Meitei groups demanded an official apology from the governor over the incident that happened in Gwaltabi on May 20, and the resignation of the chief secretary, the DGP and the security adviser. More than 250 people have died since the ethnic strife broke out on May 3, 2023, in the state. Meitei groups maintain that the territorial integrity of the state is non-negotiable in any peace process, while the Kuki-Zos assert that the only solution to resolve the crisis is creating a separate administration for the hill districts where they live.

"44 MLAs Ready To Form Manipur Government": BJP MLA After Meeting Governor

In a big political development in Manipur, which is under President's Rule, BJP MLA and former minister Thokchom Radheshyam has said "all 44 MLAs" have agreed to form the government "as per the wishes of the people", but the final decision will be taken by the central leadership. Mr Radheshyam made the statement on Wednesday, after he and nine other MLAs met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. "All 44 MLAs have agreed to form a popular government as per the wishes of the people. MLAs are ready to form the government. We have conveyed this to the governor. We also discussed possible solutions for issues (plaguing the state). 10 MLAs visited the governor as representatives to explain our position... the final decision will be taken by the central leadership," the legislator from Heirok assembly constituency said. "The governor took note of what we said and assured us he will take whatever action is in the best interest of the people," he said. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. Mr Singh had been under fire for his handling of the violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which broke out in May 2023 and has claimed over 260 lives and left thousands displaced. The Manipur Assembly has a strength of 60, of which one seat is vacant. The BJP-led coalition consists of 44 MLAs, 37 of whom are from the party.

44 MLAs ready to form new government in Manipur, BJP MLA after meeting Governor

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Thounaojam Radheshyam on Wednesday said that 44 MLAs, excluding the five from the Congress party, are prepared to form a new government in Manipur. Speaking to media persons outside the Raj Bhavan in Imphal, Radheshyam said that 10 MLAs had met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to formally inform him of the support for a new government. 'We 44 MLAs are ready to form a new government, people have been suffering from two years due to Covid and another two years due to ongoing crisis. Formation of new government is in the hand of Centre but we are ready', he said after the meeting with governor. The Manipur Legislative Assembly has a total of 60 seats, including five held by the Congress. Among the remaining 50 lawmakers, ten MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community, including seven from the BJP, have been demanding a separate administration in the form of a Union Territory (UT). Former CM Singh also met Governor Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday evening. The ethnic violence in the state has since May 2023 claimed at least 260 lives and displaced around 60,000. It has forced Meiteis and Kukis to withdraw to their strongholds. The Meiteis, mostly Hindu, live largely in the plains of Imphal valley, and the Kukis, predominantly Christian, in the hills. Fortified buffer zones separate the Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas. Out of the 60 assembly seats, BJP has the majority with 32; followed by the National People's Party (NPP) with 7 seats, Janata Dal (United) (JDU) with 6 seats, Congress and Naga People's Front with 5 seats each, two for Kuki People's Alliance and three Independents. N Kayisii, the sitting NPP MLA from Manipur's Tadubi constituency, died in January this year, leaving the seat vacant as of now.

Radheshyam (28) was an animal rescuer from Dholia village in Pokhran, who was known for his efforts to save the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), the state bird of Rajasthan, considered India's most critically-endangered bird species. Jaipur, May 25 (PTI) The untimely deaths of three wildlife activists, including prominent conservationist Radheshyam Pemani Bishnoi, and a forest guard in a road accident in Jaisalmer have shocked wildlife lovers and locals. With the support of villagers, Radheyshyam created more than 100 watering holes for birds across Pokhran, a desert area, which were filled regularly using tankers. 'Radheshyam made wildlife conservation his life's mission. He worked on the ground. He started a great mission to provide water to birds and animals inhabiting this desert area. I urge the youth of the region to come forward and carry forward his mission,' Shivraj Bishnoi from the Akhil Bhartiya Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha said. He said the Sabha will erect a memorial in memory of the four wildlife lovers who lost their lives in the accident. Bengaluru teen develops app to aid cancer patient support, empower caregivers

A 16-year-old student from Bengaluru has developed a mobile app to help support a group often "forgotten" in the cancer care journey - the Radheshyam, a student of class XI at 10X International School, launched OncoCaregiver, an app designed to offer emotional, medical, and logistical support to those caring for cancer initiative stems from Avani's personal experience watching her family members struggle while looking after two loved ones diagnosed with stage 2 "Both my grandmother and aunt were diagnosed a few years ago. My parents were their primary caregivers, and I saw first-hand how hard it was, emotionally and practically. They were managing complex treatments, making difficult decisions, and providing round-the-clock support, all while trying to stay strong," she told from a family of oncologists, Avani was no stranger to the world of cancer care. However, she noticed that while there are many innovations being developed for patients, the people supporting them - called caregivers - often receive little or no help. Her understanding deepened during an internship at an oncology hospital in Bengaluru. There, she interviewed dozens of caregivers and conducted surveys across the findings revealed high levels of anxiety, depression, burnout, and confusion around treatment options. Many also reported feeling isolated and overwhelmed."It became clear to me that caregivers need support just as urgently as the patients do. A cancer diagnosis affects two lives - the patient's and the caregiver's. But only one gets help, especially in India," Avani bridge this gap, she created OncoCaregiver, a one-stop app offering a suite of tools tailored to caregivers' needs. These include access to psychologists specialising in caregiver burnout, a dedicated cancer coach to explain treatment plans, cancer-specific meal planning from medical nutritionists, and a peer-support chat app also provides online yoga and meditation sessions, emergency resources, and a verified directory of oncologists for second opinions. Crucially, it offers these services either free or at subsidised rates, with completely free access for rural and underprivileged users. OncoCaregiver app developer Avani Radheshyam with her parents. Since launching in October 2024, the app has supported over 50 caregivers, built over 1,000 members on Instagram, conducted workshops on palliative care and mindfulness, and onboarded student volunteers from across said that work is underway to expand access by translating the app and website into nine regional Indian languages."This app is meant to be a lifeline. Caregivers are the unsung heroes of the cancer fight. With this app, they are no longer left behind," Avani said.
