Bono Rocks Cannes With 7-Minute Standing Ovation for ‘Stories of Surrender'

Bono was on hand at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday night for the world premiere of his new Apple documentary, 'Bono: Stories of Surrender,' where the U2 frontman received a 7-minute standing ovation following the screening. Bono grew emotional during the minutes-long ovation. As the applause began to wane, he opened his speech with a few words and a promise to speak fluent French next year. I'm an Irishman. I'm not even a self-made man,' Bono told the crowd. 'You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Paul] McGuinness wrote this story.' At one point, Bono saluted actor and director Sean Penn, who was in the audience, and said, 'If I was in the trenches, like real trenches, as opposed to ones on a movie set, I'd want to be with Sean Penn in those trenches. He was there for me. Thank you again.' The Andrew Dominik-directed film documents the U2 frontman's one-man show of the same name, which is based on his celebrated memoir 'Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story' and its accompanying tour. According to its logline, the doc 'pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends and faith that have challenged and sustained him, revealing personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist and rockstar. Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy.' Bono is no stranger to Cannes, having owned a residence in the south of France since the '90s. U2 also premiered the band's concert film, 'U2 3D,' during a midnight screening at the festival in 2007, before which they gave an iconic performance on the steps of the Palais. 'Bono: Stories of Surrender' hails from RadicalMedia and Plan B Entertainment, with RadicalMedia's Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick producing alongside Plan B's Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Bono also executive produces with Jennifer Pitcher and Kelly McNamara. ‘Bono: Stories Of Surrender' Draws 6½-Minute Ovation At Cannes Premiere

U2 frontman and rock legend Bono just rocked the Palais with documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender, receiving a 6½-minute ovation. At the five-minute mark, he jokingly started to unbutton his shirt to keep the applause going. After starting his speech with a little French for the hometown crowd, Bono said: 'I'm not a French man. I'm an Irish man. And I'm not a self-made man.' Pointing to his wife Ali and then his 45-year U2 bandmates, he added: 'You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Longtime band manager] Paul McGuinness wrote this story. We're still writing it, Paul. Still a work in progress.' A rep for director Andrew Dominik, however, said the filmmaker 'is unfortunately working right now and could not make it to Cannes.' Bono addresses the audience after the premiere of 'Bono: Stories of Surrender' #Cannes2025 — Deadline (@DEADLINE) May 16, 2025 Playing in the Special Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival, the Andrew Dominik-directed doc is culled from Bono's 2023 one-man show at New York's Beacon Theatre, weaving performances of his best-known songs into a tale of a boy suffering the shocking loss of his mother and trying in vain to get the needed acknowledgment from a grieving father. RELATED: Of the doc, the Dublin native and lifetime human rights activist recently told Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr., 'I had to dig quite deep and just go for a family story. All families are little operas, some bigger than others. There's always the soap opera, and there's suds here. There are tenors; there's the figure of my father, which kind of dominates. And the band. People wouldn't be turning up to hear my story if it wasn't for them. Overall, as excruciating as it's been — and I'm glad it's over — this is a great close to it.' Gérard Depardieu Found Guilty of Sexual Assault, Gets 18-Month Suspended Sentence

A Paris court on Tuesday found Gérard Depardieu guilty of sexual assault, giving him an 18-month suspended sentence. Depardieu was found guilty of sexually assaulting two women, a production designer and an assistant director, on the set of Jean Becker's French film The Green Shutters in 2021. The court also placed the French star of Green Card and Cyrano de Bergerac on the national sex offender registry. Depardieu did not appear in court for the sentencing. The ruling is being seen as a landmark in the #MeToo movement in France. The set dresser, referred to only as Amélie in court, said the actor grabbed her with his legs and started groping her, saying he was going to take his 'big parasol' and 'shove it up your pussy.' The third assistant director, referred to as Sarah, described Depardieu grabbing her buttocks and breasts on two separate occasions on set. Depardieu has repeatedly denied the charges against him, claiming that as an old man (he is 76) he was 'not into groping' and that his actions had been misinterpreted. In one instance, the actor claimed, he had grabbed Amélie's hips 'to keep from slipping.' His lawyer has said he will appeal. During this trial, Depardieu had some prominent defenders, including actress Fanny Ardant (8 Women), who testified that she had 'never witnessed an act that I would have found shocking' by Depardieu. But she acknowledged that 'the world has changed, society has changed, the benchmarks are no longer the same, there are things that we tolerated and that are no longer tolerable.' Depardieu could be back later this year to stand trial in a separate case, involving rape allegations made by actress Charlotte Arnould, dating back to 2018.
