Heart Celebrates 50 Years Of Rock At New York City Show
Fifty years ago, the world was introduced to the music of Heart, led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, via their debut album Dreamboat Annie. That record, featuring such now-classic tracks as 'Magic Man," 'Crazy on You' and the title song, launched a legendary decades-long career built on heavy rock and powered by Ann's commanding voice and Nancy's aggressive guitar playing. Fast forward to the present amid more hit songs, albums and touring, Heart is marking that golden anniversary with the Royal Flush tour. It started last year but was later postponed after Ann Wilson announced she was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery. Thankfully, she has since recovered, and the tour resumed earlier this year. The band returned to New York City for an engagement this past Wednesday at Radio City Music Hall, the last date of the tour's recent leg (Heart was originally scheduled to play Madison Square Garden last year before the cancellation). Playing in front of a sold-out crowd, the Wilsons — along with guitarists Ryan Wariner, Ryan Waters and Paul Moak, bassist Tony Lucido and drummer Sean T. Lane — rocked the house with the classics and then some. Kicking off with 'Bebe Le Strange,' the title track from their 1980 album, the setlist verged between Heart's 1970s beloved hard rock staples (the aforementioned 'Magic Man' and 'Crazy on You') and mid- to late-1980s mainstream comeback hits ('Never' and 'These Dreams'). Some of their other well-known songs were reworked for the tour. For instance, the funky groove-driven 'Straight On' (from 1978's Dog and Butterfly album) seamlessly segued into David Bowie's 'Let's Dance." And Heart's dramatic power ballads from the '80s, 'Alone' and 'What About Love,' were turned into a medley. Heart has long been associated with electrifying arena rock, and that came to the fore for most of the Radio City appearance. But there were some tender moments, specifically during the 'acoustic' portion of the set with the performances of 'Dog and Butterfly' and 'Dreamboat Annie.' Also keeping up with that reflective vibe, Nancy Wilson performed an instrumental tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen with '4 Edward' from her 2021 solo record You and Me. The band, which has been a longtime admirer of Led Zeppelin, performed covers of the British rock icons' 'Going to California' and 'The Ocean.' The evening concluded in blistering fashion with the barnburning rocker 'Barracuda,' originally from the Little Queen album. It was poignant to see the Wilson sisters perform together again as Heart following a hiatus that saw each of them do their side projects. Even more special was witnessing Ann Wilson back onstage following her surgery: she performed in a wheelchair that she previously said was not due to her recent battle with cancer but from an injury suffered during a fall. That didn't diminish her vocal ability, which remained as vibrant as ever, alongside sister Nancy Wilson's urgent rhythm guitar playing. On this occasion of their debut album's milestone, Heart's recent performance felt like a full-circle moment. Opening for Heart's Radio City appearance was another music icon, Lucinda Williams. Like Heart, the Americana legend's set consisted of old favorites ('Joy,' 'Changed the Locks' and 'Drunken Angel'), somewhat recent tracks ("Rock n Roll Heart" and 'Stolen Moments,' written after Tom Petty's death) and renditions of other artists' songs (blues performer Memphis Minnie's 'You Can't Rule Me' and the Beatles' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'). She ended her show with a fiery cover of Neil Young's 'Rockin' in the Free World,' whose call-to-arms lyrics felt timely now as they did over 30 years ago. Heart Setlist: Bebe Le Strange Never Magic Man Love Alive Little Queen Straight On/Let's Dance These Dreams Crazy on You Dog & Butterfly Dreamboat Annie Going to California 4 Edward Alone/What About Love Sand The Ocean Barracuda Lucinda Williams Setlist Rock n Roll Heart Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings Stolen Moments Drunken Angel You Can't Rule Me Out of Touch While My Guitar Gently Weeps Changed the Locks Righteously Joy Rockin' in the Free World

'I won't be tuning in' says listeners after Leanne Campbell breakfast show axed
Listeners have said they 'won't be tuning in' to Hits Radio after Leanne Campbell's breakfast show is axed. Hits Radio, formerly Radio City, will stop broadcasting the show this summer as it is set to be replaced by a national programme. Leanne Campbell, who has co-hosted breakfast on Radio City and Hits Radio for more than 10 years, and her current presenting partner Joel Ross, will vanish from their current 6am-10am time slot. The show was the only one left on Hits Radio Liverpool that had a Merseyside link, after the Radio City breakfast show was combined with the one broadcast on Lancashire's Rock FM - which Joel hosted. The Liverpool station and 14 others across the country were rebranded to Hits Radio last April. That meant the end of the Radio City name. Just before Christmas last year, the station also closed in St. John's Beacon, where it had been based since 2000. READ MORE: Stephen Graham fans 'can't wait' as hit TV show announces second series READ MORE: Michelle Keegan shares new snap of baby daughter and says it's 'simply magic' Parent company Bauer Media revealed that it will scrap local and regional breakfast shows on all of its Hits Radio stations for the whole of England and Wales from June 9. Sharing her thoughts to Facebook page 'Ladies of Liverpool', Leanne Campbell said: "Our show will be replaced by a national show. "To every single one of you who has woken up with me in Liverpool for over 22 years, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It has been the greatest privilege to be part of your mornings, to share the laughter, the stories, our lives and all the moments that have made this job so special THANK YOU!" She continued: "Your support has always meant the world to me and without it we wouldn't have smashed those glass ceilings together. What a journey! The scouse 'travel girl' is forever grateful for what we achieved! X" Fans took to social media to express their 'shock', while some listeners said they would no longer be tuning in to Hits Radio. Alex Litwinski said: "Sorry to hear this. I won't be tuning in once Leanne gone! "Wishing her all the very best for the future, and thank you for all the laughs she's given Liverpool in the mornings. Won't be the same without Leanne and Joel." Sally Miller added: "Really hope Leanne goes on to bigger and better things, she will be so missed... a burst of friendly sunshine in the mornings. Hits Radio is going to lose a lot of morning listeners." Lynn Swift said she was 'absolutely gutted' after hearing the news of the show's axing, adding: "Leanne Campbell, you are the heart and soul of Liverpool. "You are down with the listeners and you are always game for a laugh. You are the reason I laugh along every morning, so thank you. "I really don't think I will listen to Hits Radio when you've gone, which is sad because I have been a Radio City listener for 50 years now. I remember it's launch very well! "Lee Butler is really missed too, another Scouser giving it loads for true Scousers in our region. Hearing this news is not nice news at all and will be a huge loss to many." Mark Leach said: "Such a shame to hear this. Listened to their breakfast show for years. Was literally the only thing that kept me listening to that station. Won't be listening anymore." Debi Boynton added: "I wish Leanne and Joel all the best for the future. I loved our local radio and no way will I be listening to any national radio program. Leanne feels like a good friend I will miss her. She makes me laugh so much." Simon Myciunka, CEO of Bauer Media Audio UK, said of the shift to fully networked programmes: 'We continually evolve to meet audience behaviours and advertiser needs and by launching one single national breakfast show across Hits Radio, we are supercharging our efforts to provide a more unified, engaging experience across the entire schedule while also retaining local news and information. 'I'd like to extend my thanks to our Hits Radio breakfast teams in England and Wales as they embark on their final run of shows. Their significant contribution has played a hugely important part of the Hits Radio story so far and we wish them well for the future.'
