What to watch for at the Tony Awards, Broadway's biggest night

Here are some key things to know as Broadway's biggest night approaches, including how to watch, who is poised to make history, what old favorite gets to take a victory lap and how you can see George Clooney on Broadway from the comfort of your couch. When are the Tony Awards? The Tonys will be broadcast to both coasts on Sunday, June 8, from 8 p.m. ET-11 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT to 8 p.m. PT., live from Radio City Music Hall. How can I watch them? On CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. Who's hosting the Tony Awards? Tony-, Emmy- and Grammy-winner and three-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, the 'Wicked' star, will be making her debut hosting the Tonys. She won the lead actress in a musical Tony in 2016 for 'The Color Purple' and will have just released her new album, 'I Forgive You.' A pre-show will be broadcast on Pluto TV from 6:40 p.m.-8:00 p.m. ET/3:40 p.m.-5:00 p.m. PT, where some Tonys will be handed out. Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry will host that telecast. Viewers can access it on their smart TV, streaming device, mobile app or online by going to Pluto TV and clicking on the 'Live Music' channel, found within the Entertainment category on the service. How many awards are there? A total of 26 competitive categories, from lead and featured actors to scenic, costume and lighting design. Some technical award handouts may be pre-taped and winners won't appear on the live show, only cut down into edited bits sandwiched into the telecast. What are the top nominees? There are three of them: 'Buena Vista Social Club,' which takes its inspiration from Wim Wenders' 1999 Oscar-nominated documentary; 'Death Becomes Her,' based on the 1992 cult classic film; and 'Maybe Happy Ending,' a rom-com musical about a pair of androids. 'I haven't seen one nominated show that I haven't been wowed by. Everything brings something,' says Lowe Cunningham, lead producer of 'Death Becomes Her' and also a Tony voter. 'How dare the Broadway community come together with such excellent work,' she jokes. 'I needed everything else to be much worse, and I don't appreciate it.' Can history be made? Audra McDonald, the most recognized performer in the theater awards' history, could possibly extending her Tony lead. Already the record holder for most acting wins with six Tonys, McDonald could add to that thanks to her leading turn in an acclaimed revival of 'Gypsy.' She will push the record for a performer to most wins with seven if she prevails on Tony night. And Kara Young — the first Black actress to be nominated for a Tony Award in four consecutive years — could become the first Black person to win two Tonys consecutively should she win for her role in the play 'Purpose.' Other possible firsts: — Daniel Dae Kim could becomes the first Asian winner in the category of best leading actor in a play for his work in a revival of 'Yellow Face.' And Marjan Neshat and her co-star Tala Ashe are vying to become the first female actors of Iranian descent to win a Tony. A special guest Normally, shows open for several years don't get any Tony telecast attention but 'Hamilton' is no normal show. The original cast will celebrate the show's 10th anniversary on Broadway with a performance featuring creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and actors Goldsberry, Ariana DeBose, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Javier Muñoz, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan and Phillipa Soo. What will producers hope to avoid? Any repeat of last year, when Jay-Z's electrifying reunion with Alicia Keys on what appeared to be a live duet of 'Empire State of Mind' was actually pre-taped hours before the live show. The appearance by the rapper in support of Keys' musical 'Hell's Kitchen' turned out to be a piece of Hollywood trickery, undercutting the Broadway community's full-throated embrace of live singing and dancing. Broadway's big season The health of Broadway — once very much in doubt during the pandemic lockdown — is now very good, at least in terms of box office. The 2024-2025 season took in $1.9 billion, the highest-grossing season in recorded history, overtaking the pre-pandemic previous high of $1.8 billion during the 2018-2019 season. In terms of attendance, Broadway welcomed nearly 14.7 million ticket buyers, the second best attended season on record, behind only 2018-2019. But sky-high ticket prices have led to fears that Broadway is getting financially out of touch. A revival of 'Othello' with Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal broke the record for top-grossing play in Broadway history with a gross of $2,818,297 for eight performances, fueled by some seats going for as high as $921. How can you get in the mood? Even if you haven't been able to get to Broadway this season, you can still see one of the shows. Inside Hugh Jackman's Breathtaking Real Estate Portfolio amid Divorce from Deborra-lee Furness
Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness's divorce comes with a bevy of impressive assets that will be divided up among the spouses of nearly three decades. Furness, 69, officially filed for divorce from Jackman, 56, on May 23, nearly two years after they first announced their split in 2023. As of Friday, May 30, the pair are awaiting a judge's signoff to finalize their nearly $400 million settlement. Throughout their marriage, the former couple occupied properties around the world, including in the U.S., U.K. and their native Australia. At present, their high-ticket homes include a two-story apartment in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood, a penthouse overlooking Bondi Beach in Sydney and a waterfront home in the Hamptons. Jackman and Furness purchased their impressive downtown Manhattan abode for about $21 million in 2022, just a year before announcing their split, according to Architectural Digest. The penthouse apartment comes in at nearly 5,000 square feet spread across two floors, plus another 3,700 square feet of outdoor space — the ultimate N.Y.C luxury. It's located near the Hudson River in a starchitect-designed building in an area that is well known for its eye-catching facades and famous tenants. Recently Jackman has been spending much of his time in New York, where he is currently juggling two gigs on stage, starring in an Off-Broadway show, Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, and a concert series at Radio City Music Hall, called From New York, With Love. Jackman and Furness have bought, sold and rented numerous apartments and homes around Sydney since they first met on the set of an Australian TV series in 1995 and married the following year. Their most recent acquisition appears to be an ultra-modern condo overlooking the city's famous Bondi Beach. They paid a reported $6 million for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom spread in 2016, per AD. Jackman is regularly spotted making the most of the property's stunning seaside setting. In December 2024, he was photographed after having taken a summer dip in the ocean wearing a pair of blue-and-white patterned drawstring board shorts. Long before buying their current house, Jackman, Furness and their two children, son Oscar and daughter Ava, were already regular visitors to the world-famous stretch of sand. The one home the former couple shared with the world is their modernist Hamptons hideaway, which was published in an AD feature in November 2021. Jackman and Furness purchased an empty 2.5-acre waterfront plot for $3.5 million in 2015 and spent the next six years building a custom Long Island retreat with three bedrooms, five bathrooms, a guest house and access to a private beach. Furness called the place her "dream home,' sharing, "It's like, bucket list, tick it off. I've done it, and I loved it.' Jackman also praised his then-wife's decorating prowess. 'Because of Deb's design, it brings us all together," he told the outlet. Still, in 2023, the same year they announced their separation, they chose to list the house for rent for the entire summer, rather than use it themselves. The asking price was $166,000 per month, the New York Post reported at the time. They reportedly picked up an impressive London pied-a-terre in 2021, according to the Post, though at the time the property was not even complete, and it's not known whether they moved in. Another N.Y.C. property's status is also currently unknown: the three-story West Village penthouse the couple purchased for a reported $21 million in 2008. Their primary family home for many years, the 11,000 square foot property had five bedrooms, including a full-floor primary suite at the top. Knicks and the City: Rhapsody in Blue and Orange
The roar can be heard for blocks, echoing off buildings and funneling through the streets of Manhattan. You may have heard it cascading up Seventh Avenue. Maybe you saw people decked out in orange and blue lining up outside Radio City Music Hall or crashed into them while trying to catch a late train at Penn Station. Knicks fans have taken over some of New York City's iconic venues to watch their team's deepest playoff run in 25 years, riding the waves of joy and pain together even if they cannot afford tickets for the games at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks have organized watch parties at the Oculus at the World Trade Center, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park and, of course, the Garden itself. Team watch parties are hardly new or exclusive to New York. The Knicks hosted watch parties during the team's away games during the N.B.A. finals in 1999, and the area outside the Garden has been a spot for impromptu celebrations after big wins for the last few years. If you can get one, a single ticket to a Knicks playoff game at home costs hundreds of dollars, and substantially more if you want to sit closer to the celebrities who line the court. But for the thousands of fans on the outside, the plaza in front of the Garden at West 33rd Street has been the main outdoor venue to watch the game on a large screen for free. During Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Boston Celtics, the defending champions, Hunter Berker wore his black-and-green Celtics jersey amid a human sea of blue and orange. After the Celtics surrendered a 20-point lead and lost the game, Knicks fans surrounded him, gloating and chanting, 'Knicks in four!' 'It's a little less cool than it was earlier,' said Berker, who lives in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. 'It's on edge now. But you can't just leave. You've got to represent.' For those without hundreds of dollars for a spot on the very top row of Madison Square Garden, a $10 pass to Radio City Music Hall was a great alternative for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Radio City Music Hall, the elegant home of the Rockettes, was festive and expectant — at least for about three and a half quarters. Then the Pacers staged a historic comeback, tied the game on a crazy, high-bouncing, buzzer-beating circus shot, and won in overtime. Stunned Knicks fans filed quietly out onto Sixth Avenue. It was not the rain that depressed Knicks fans watching Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals — it was the Pacers taking command of the series by winning their second game at Madison Square Garden. Many fans withstood the inclement conditions to watch together in Central Park. (During one rainy away game in the second round, the Garden allowed fans in for free for a watch party. The Garden usually hosts watch parties for $10 during away playoff games.) The game was in Indiana that night, but back in New York, the city and its fans remained positive and even exuberant, if a bit nervous. Things did not start out well. The Knicks fell behind, and worried fans at the Oculus at the World Trade Center stared blankly at the screen or hid their faces in their hands. But then the mood completely changed when the Knicks outscored Indiana by 16 points in the fourth quarter to win, 106-100. The team, like its fans, is nothing if not resilient. Still, the task remains daunting. The Knicks lost Game 4 in Indiana, putting them one loss away from elimination. Game 5 is Thursday night at the Garden. If you hear a lot of cheers flowing through the city's streets late at night, chances are it's the signal that there will be a Game 6, too.
