Pete Carroll: Ashton Jeanty and Raheem Mostert could split time as "Thunder and Lightning"
The Raiders didn't draft running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth overall pick to keep him on the draft, but coach Pete Carroll says Jeanty's presence doesn't rule out a committee approach at running back for the Raiders. After saying that Jeanty had an excellent minicamp, Carroll talked up Raheem Mostert, who signed a one-year contract with the Raiders at the start of free agency, as a player who could compete for a big role in the offense. Advertisement "They're gonna show us that when they get the chance to compete," Carroll said. "I love having multiple guys play. I'm not relying on one guy. Thunder and Lightning back in the day, whatever it takes to get it done. We're going to let the guys play for their play time. Raheem, I love having him. He's an experienced guy, he's been a great speedster for years. We've defended him for years and he's been a nightmare for us." Carroll also mentioned running backs Zamir White and Sincere McCormick as having something to offer in the offense, although he acknowledged that all eyes are on Jeanty. "Ashton is every bit what we hoped he would look like," Carroll said. "He's caught the ball well, done good stuff, taken everything seriously, terrific effort throughout. We made it a really big deal to him: Everyone's watching you. He's embraced that." Still, Carroll said every running back on the roster is competing with Jeanty for carries. "When we go to camp it'll be game on," Carroll said. "We'll see what happens."

Raiders top 5 biggest need positions heading into 2025 NFL Draft
Raiders top 5 biggest need positions heading into 2025 NFL Draft Hard to believe it, but we are approaching two weeks until the start of the 2025 NFL Draft. With that in mind, let's take a look at the most pressing needs the Raiders should be looking to address in the draft. 1. Running back They added Raheem Mostert, but he is not a workhorse back. He is more of a change-of-pace back. Sincere McCormick proved he could be a nice piece out of the backfield, but a bonafide starting running back would really help to get the running game where Pete Carroll wants it to be. They very well could address this position in the first two rounds, but should they wait longer, it would be only due to the depth at the position. 2. Wide receiver No Davante Adams replacement has been signed to the team. They could still add one of the remaining free agent wide receivers, but that will be a temporary fix. What they need is a number one, preferably an X receiver, but they could also use a slot target. So, yeah, needing help at two receiver spots makes this a position they also need to address with one of their top two picks. 3. Cornerback Nate Hobbs is gone and they have no one to replace him at nickel. They are also parting ways with Jack Jones and replacing his starting job with Eric Stokes, who comes over on a one-year deal. So, basically they have Stokes and Jakorian Bennett on each side and that's it. That means they need a starting nickel, depth, and a long term answer at the position. And being that cornerback is a premium position, getting one high in this draft could be in the cards, depending on who is on the board when. 4. Offensive line This doesn't differentiate between interior or tackle because overall depth and competition is needed at guard and tackle. Ideally they would be able to get a versatile tackle/guard, preferably in the mid-rounds. That aforementioned running plans is gonna need all the big maulers it can get. 5. Linebacker Gone are Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo. Replacing them are veterans Elandon Roberts and Devin White. Both are on one-year deals. And neither currently has any expected competition for their jobs. Pete Carroll likes young competition. White's play these days in particular is a long way from his Pro Bowl season of 2021. So, while he has John Spytek in his corner from their Bucs days, he will still have to prove he deserves to keep that job. Adding a mid-round linebacker to push for it would be ideal.

Raheem Mostert joins Raiders, excited to work with Geno Smith and revitalize team's rushing attack
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Raheem Mostert was on a call with Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and running backs coach Deland McCullough when he got a text from an unfamiliar number. 'Hey, this is Geno, I'm super excited to have you, man. We're super excited to have you. Let's get wins. Let's get ready to work,' new Raiders quarterback Geno Smith wrote. Smith's text reassured Mostert he made the right decision to relocate his family and become a part of the storied franchise. 'That just tells you the type of player that he is and wants to be," Mostert said Wednesday after signing a one-year contract with Las Vegas. 'That right there in itself, for a guy that can reach out to so many other people ... to reach out to me the way he did in that moment, I hadn't even officially signed, makes it reassuring that he's definitely on track to be something great and also this team.' The 10-year veteran joins an offense he believes will be tailored to what he can bring to a backfield, as first-year coach Pete Carroll and Kelly try to revitalize a unit that ranked last with just 1,357 yards rushing in 2024. 'My role is whatever I can create it to be,' said Mostert who spent the last three seasons with Miami and is joining his seventh NFL team. 'Obviously, there's opportunity there. I'm going to come in the building ready to work.' Though Mostert was plagued with injuries at the start of his career, the 32-year-old stayed healthy for the better part of his three years in Miami. Mostert has played in 103 games with 39 starts and rushed for 3,791 yards on 759 carries, with 34 touchdowns. He's also caught 111 passes for 899 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season was 2023, when he had 1,012 yards rushing and a league-leading 18 touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl. Over the last three seasons, Mostert's 28 offensive touchdowns are tied for the ninth most in the league among running backs, while his career average of 5.0 yards per rush is tied for the fourth-highest among running backs during the Super Bowl era. But it's more than numbers with Mostert. He'll be looked upon to lead a group of running backs that currently includes five others, none of whom has more than three years of experience. Las Vegas might add to that in the NFL draft, with some analysts predicting the Raiders will select Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty of Boise State with the sixth overall pick. Mostert could become a mentor to the franchise's running back of the future. 'I kind of take that with pride,' Mostert said. 'One thing that I truly try to implement within the running back room is, 'Hey, look, you help me feed my family, I'll help you feed yours.' ... We all work together.' ___ AP NFL:

Reports: Raiders signing veteran RB Raheem Mostert
March 13 - The Las Vegas Raiders are signing veteran running back Raheem Mostert to a one-year, $1.2 million contract, according to multiple reports on Thursday. The free agent is reunited with the Raiders' new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was the head coach in San Francisco in 2016 when Mostert played for the 49ers. Kelly also was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles when Mostert was briefly on the practice squad in 2015. Playing behind second-year back De'Von Achane in 2024, Mostert split backup duties with rookie Jaylen Wright and rushed for 278 yards and two TDs in 13 games (one start). Undrafted in 2015, Mostert has rushed for 3,791 yards and 34 touchdowns in 103 games (39 starts) for the Dolphins (2015, 2022-24), Baltimore Ravens (2015), Cleveland Browns (2015), Chicago Bears (2016) and San Francisco (2016-21). The Raiders' top rushers last season, Alexander Mattison (420 yards, four touchdowns) and Ameer Abdullah (311, two), are unrestricted free agents.
