AKU in Pakistan celebrates class of 2024
With Princess Zahra Aga Khan in attendance, 473 students graduated from the Aga Khan University (AKU) on Wednesday, as the university paid tributes to its late founder and first chancellor Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. The AKU also welcomed Prince Rahim Aga Khan V as its new Chancellor, and Princess Zahra as its Pro-Chancellor. Students earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in 16 different fields, including nursing, medicine and education. More than 70% of the graduates were women. To date, the AKU has awarded nearly 16,000 degrees, diplomas and postgraduate certificates in Pakistan. "Our founding chancellor once said that the cornerstone of his vision was opportunity – the opportunity to build a better life for oneself and one's family," President Sulaiman Shahabuddin said. "In Pakistan, His Highness created opportunities for millions of people through the AKU and the AKDN. Looking out at the Class of 2024 today, I see women and men who are, without question, ready to play their part in creating a world that is rich in opportunity." The longest-serving member of the AKU's Board of Trustees, Princess Zahra was appointed by Prince Rahim Aga Khan V to serve as the university's Pro-Chancellor and act on his behalf. Her appointment was announced by Chair of the Board of Trustees Zakir Mahmood. "Princess Zahra's appointment shows the strong commitment of His Highness to build on and advance the legacy of our founding Chancellor and his conviction in the mission and vision of the University," Mahmood said. He cited Princess Zahra's deep understanding of the AKU's plans, programmes and vision, and her close involvement in its growth and evolution over two decades. "It brings me much happiness that my brother, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan, in accordance with my father's wishes and the founding Charter of AKU, has become Chancellor," Princess Zahra said. "I am deeply honoured that His Highness has appointed me Pro-Chancellor of AKU, so that, togetherin our respective roleswe may continue to sustain and strengthen this remarkable institution, remaining true to our father's vision for the university," she added. "His Highness the Aga Khan's vision of pluralism as vital to our existence reminds us of the diverse community we have built here and the inclusive world we aim to shape," Valedictorian Mustafa Saiyoum said. "As graduates of AKU, we are charged with the responsibility to carry this vision forwardto bridge gaps, create solutions and be agents of positive change." On the occasion, Saira Parveen received the School of Nursing and Midwifery's Outstanding Graduate Award, and Shahnoor Ahmed received the Medical College's Best Graduate Award. Associate Professor Shabina Ariff and Professor Sarah Saleem received the Award of Excellence in Research, Dean Adil Haider received the Award of Distinction and Professor Muhammad Rizwan Khan received the Award of Excellence in Teaching.

Aga Khan IV laid to rest in Aswan
KARACHI: Prince Karim Aga Khan IV was laid to rest in Aswan, Egypt, on Sunday at a private burial ceremony attended by Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, family members, and leaders of the global Ismaili community, said a press release issued by the Diwan of Ismaili Imamat. It said that Aswan Governor Maj-Gen Dr Ismail Kamal joined the procession from the city to the banks of the Nile River, where the casket of the late prince was transferred by boat in a ceremonial crossing to the private domain, where Villa Nour El Salam and the mausoleum of Aga Khan III were situated. The casket, draped in a white cloth with his personal standard embroidered in gold, was carried by hand to his resting place. Prince Karim was laid to rest in the mausoleum of the late Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III, atop of the hill overlooking the Nile. Prince Karim al-Husseini, 88, passed away in Lisbon on Tuesday. His funeral prayers were offered in Lisbon on Saturday. The funeral was attended by over 300 guests, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and former Spanish king Juan Carlos. Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb represented Pakistan at the funeral. He also met with Prince Rahim Aga Khan V and expressed heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of late Prince Karim Aga Khan on behalf of the president, the prime minister and the people of Pakistan. Meanwhile. President Asif Zardari on Sunday left for Lisbon, to meet Prince Rahim Agha Khan to extend his condolences on the passing of the late Prince Karim. According to the President House, Zardari will also meet President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The late Aga Khan was the 49th Imam of the global Ismaili community. His ancestors had governed Egypt – the centre of the Fatimid Caliphate – during the 10th and 11th centuries. Aswan was the final resting place of Sir the Aga Khan III, and his wife, Mata Salamat. They both enjoyed warm relations with the people of Aswan, which have been sustained by the late Prince Karim and his family, through the work of the Om Habibeh Foundation and the Aga Khan Foundation.

Prince Rahim to grant audience on Feb 11
KARACHI: Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, will grant an audience to senior leaders of the Jamat on Tuesday, February 11, in Lisbon, a statement from the Diwan of The Ismaili Imamat said on Thursday. "At a special Homage ceremony in Lisbon on Tuesday 11 February, Mawlana Hazar Imam will grant an audience to senior leaders of the Jamat, who will pledge their allegiance to the 50th Imam of the Ismailis on behalf of the global Jamat," the statement read. Prince Rahim Aga Khan V is the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, as designated by his late father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, in accordance with historical Shia Imami Ismaili tradition, another statement from the Diwan of The Ismaili Imamat, said. Born on 12 October 1971, Prince Rahim is the eldest son of the late Prince Karim Aga Khan and his first wife, Princess Salimah, the statement added. Prince Rahim was educated at Phillips Academy Andover and graduated in 1995 from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature. Prince Rahim has two sons from his former wife, Princess Salwa: Prince Irfan (b. 2015) and Prince Sinan (b. 2017). He serves on the boards of many agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network, and has closely followed the work of The Institute of Ismaili Studies and the Ismaili community's social governance institutions. Prince Rahim has been particularly concerned with the AKDN's drive to protect the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change, serving as Chairman of its Environment and Climate Committee, the statement said. He has also given sustained attention to the work of AKDN and the Ismaili community institutions in addressing the needs of those living in the greatest poverty and supporting the improvement of their livelihoods through education, training and enterprise.
