RTA launches 'bus pooling' service for daily commuters
Bus pooling is like car pooling, but RTA edition… Thousands of daily commuters in the UAE use car pooling services to make their journeys. Some do it to save cost on petrol, tolls and parking, some who don't drive do it for easy commuting, some do it for convenience and some do it to be eco-conscious. All these are great benefits of car pooling, and now RTA is offering a licensed version of this incredibly popular private service. The new RTA Bus Pooling service is offering daily commuters with fixed journeys a great option to move across Dubai. The service offers door-to-door service at affordable prices tailored to your daily routine, and delivered by fully licensed and RTA-regulated operators. The cost-effective service is also sustainable, reducing the number of cars on the roads used to transport individuals and curbing traffic and congestion, a ongoing source of distress for the Dubai workforce. It is available citywide, and is ideal for set, daily commutes to workplaces, universities, and other destinations across the city. Commuters can book the service conveniently through the DrivenBus, Fluxx Daily, or Citylink Dubai mobile applications, all operators licensed by RTA. Six new bus and taxi lanes in Dubai to cut travel time by 41 per cent
The latest road updates from RTA… Amid ongoing efforts to ease congestion in the city, reduce travel times and deal with the perennial problem of traffic, RTA has announced new measures to expand the road network in Dubai – six new dedicated bus and taxi lanes spanning 13km, bringing the total length of dedicated lanes to 20km. The new addition is expected to cut travel times by 41 per cent, thereby boosting passenger numbers by 10 per cent, enhance bus arrival times by 42 per cent, and significantly reduce congestion in key areas and routes. This comes as a welcome boost to public transport culture, seemingly the most sustainable and efficient answer to our traffic woes. Dubai's public bus network now covers 88 per cent of the city's urban areas with 188 million riders transported, which is a year-on-year increase of 8 per cent. The daily statistics are even more impressive. The fleet of 1,390 buses operates across 187 routes, and completes 11,000 trips daily, covering approximately 333,000 km and serving more than 500,000 riders every day. Previously in 2024, RTA introduced nine express bus routes, nine additional metro link services, and four new taxi routes targeting high-demand areas. More modifications to the public bus network include a new vehicle to the public transport network – the electric bus. A recent pilot operation launched by the authority involves a new electric bus on route F13, a feeder bus service between Al Quoz Bus Depot and the Dubai Mall Metro Bus Stop. This bus service starts at Al Quoz Bus Depot before going through key destinations including Burj Khalifa, The Palace Downtown Hotel, and Dubai Fountain, and terminates at the Dubai Mall Metro Bus Stop (South). The features of the electric bus include a majority of smart systems that will support the driver for a smoother, safer ride. A high-definition camera and screens that replace traditional mirrors, and a transparent display that projects essential driving information onto the front windscreen to support driver awareness, to name a few. The RTA is already taking big strides in attempts to expand and encourage the usage of public transport in the city, a way also to ease the perennial traffic problem of Dubai. Some of the new transport systems being announced or introduced, in addition to a massive expansion of the Metro network, include the Rail Bus, Bus-on-Demand, the Etihad Rail, Sky Pods and flying taxis. UAE: Six upcoming transport projects that will revolutionise travel in Dubai
Dubai: In the coming years, Dubai's public transport system is set to transform how people travel not just across the city, but throughout the UAE. From cutting-edge metro lines to next-gen mobility solutions, here's a look at the major projects that will redefine both daily commutes and long-distance journeys. 1. Dubai Metro Blue Line to Launch in 2029 Dubai Metro's much-anticipated Blue Line is set to open on September 9, 2029, adding 30km of new tracks and 14 stations to the city's growing rail network. According to Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) It will connect key locations like Dubai International Airport, Academic City, and Dubai Silicon Oasis. Once complete, the number of metro and tram stations will rise from 64 to 78. Travel times on the Blue Line will range from 10 to 25 minutes—perfect for commuters looking for speed and convenience 2. Rail Bus: A solar-powered ride for the future Unveiled at the World Government Summit, the futuristic Rail Bus blends the features of a bus and a train. It seats 40 passengers, travels up to 100km/h, and runs on a solar-powered bridge, making it both eco-friendly and cost-efficient. Developed in partnership with Rail Bus Inc, the vehicle offers a fresh take on urban mobility, combining speed with sustainability. 3. Trackless trams could soon glide through Dubai Dubai is exploring a bold new tram system without the tracks. These self-driving, electric-powered trams run on virtual tracks using cameras that follow painted lines on dedicated lanes. Designed for smoother, faster construction and lower costs, each tram will carry up to 300 passengers in three carriages. They will cruise at speeds of 25 to 60km/h, with the ability to travel 100km on a single charge. A feasibility study is underway to roll them out in eight key locations across the city. 4. Self-driving taxis hit the roads in 2026 Get ready to hail a ride without a driver. Dubai's self-driving taxis will begin pilot tests later this year, with a full launch planned for 2026. Initially, a safety driver will be on board during testing. The project is part of RTA's partnership with global autonomous tech giants like Uber, WeRide, and Baidu, and is operated under Apollo Go, RTA's autonomous mobility platform. 5. Air taxis could take off by end of 2025 Air taxis could start flying by December 2025, with a prototype already unveiled by Joby Aviation. These all-electric aircraft will support Dubai's goal of making 25% of all trips self-driving by 2030. Regulations and air corridors are currently being mapped out, laying the groundwork for both piloted and autonomous air mobility, including cargo drones.
