Bihar CM Nitish Kumar unveils projects worth ₹574 crore in Muzaffarpur

Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (July 31, 2025) laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth ₹574.16 crore in Muzaffarpur district. The project includes construction work of Railway Over Bridge (ROB)-cum-approach road between Ramdayalu Nagar and Muzaffarpur railway station at a cost of ₹167.68 crore and construction work of a road from Muzaffarpur-Pusa Road to Chandwara bridge approach road at a cost of ₹120.93 crore. Mr. Kumar laid the foundation stone for widening and upgradation work of the road portion from Chandni Chowk to Ramdayalu Nagar at a cost of ₹44.76 crore and widening and strengthening work spanning 7 km of Chandni Chowk to Bakhri road at a cost of ₹89.77 crore. The Chief Minister laid widening and strengthening work of many other roads. After laying the foundation for the various works, Mr. Kumar interacted with social security pensioners at Teacher Training College, Patahi in which the beneficiaries thanked him for increasing the pension amount from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month. He also provided tricycles to persons with disabilities apart from handing over a cheque of ₹1 lakh each to the beneficiaries under Inter-Caste Marriage Promotion Scheme. On the announcement of making 125 units of electricity free per month to every domestic consumer under the Chief Minister's Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme, the domestic consumers present there also thanked Mr. Kumar for the decision. The ASHA workers present there too thanked the Chief Minister for increasing the incentive amount threefold from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. While interacting with the members of self-help groups (SHGs) also known as Jeevika members, Mr. Kumar said when his government was formed in Bihar, the number of SHGs were negligible. 'In the year 2006, we took a loan from the World Bank and started increasing the number of self-help groups. The Jeevika sisters are doing a very good job. We named the self-help group as Jeevika and all of you are called Jeevika sisters,' Mr. Kumar said. 'Inspired by our work, the Central government of that time implemented this scheme in the whole country under the name of Aajeevika. All of you stay strong and move forward. The government will help you in every possible way,' he added. Accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and others, he also inspected the under-construction ROB of Muzaffarpur-Bypass, which is being constructed in a total length of 16.87 km at a cost of ₹250 crore. Except the ROB, the construction work of the remaining road has been completed. During the inspection, Mr. Kumar instructed officials to complete the remaining work as soon as possible. With its completion, traffic in Muzaffarpur city is expected to become more smooth. During the Pragati Yatra on January 5 this year, Mr. Kumar had reviewed the development work of Muzaffarpur district and promised several developmental schemes would be launched soon.

Tilakwadi residents appeal to PM to halt ROB construction

Pic: Second railway gate in Belagavi, where the Railway Over Bridge (ROB) is planned. Belagavi: In a strong show of public opposition, hundreds of residents and shopkeepers from Tilakwadi, Belagavi wrote letters to PM Narendra Modi urging him to intervene and halt the construction of a proposed railway overbridge (ROB) at the 2nd Railway Gate. Instead, they are advocating for an elevated railway track on viaducts as a more sustainable and less disruptive alternative. Residents, particularly from Buda A scheme No. 8 colony, requested the PM to direct authorities to maintain the status quo of level crossing LC-382. Last month, the group met Union minister of state for railways V Somanna to voice their concerns. Disappointed by the lack of a concrete response, the residents escalated the issue to the PMO. According to the residents, the proposed ROB will significantly impact daily life by cutting off access to vital amenities such as schools, hospitals, and markets. The area hosts seven schools and ten nurseries, with nearly 6,000 students relying on the existing road network. They argue that the proposed narrow ROB design is unsafe for students, cyclists, and elderly residents. Locals also pointed out that the ROB is unscientifically planned, noting that four overbridges are already proposed within a 2-kilometre radius. Small businesses in the vicinity fear shutdown, resulting in job loss and an economic downturn. Further, the plan involves demolition of a century-old Ganesh temple, which has triggered cultural and religious concerns. As an alternative, the residents proposed raising the railway track on elevated viaducts. They argue that elevated rail lines would not only reduce ground-level disruption but also enhance safety by eliminating level crossing, improve train speed, and support long-term urban planning. Railways awards Rs 32.4 crore The ROB project was approved by the railway dept in 2018, and the contract was awarded on Feb 21, 2025, at an estimated cost of Rs 32.4 crore. However, resistance began when soil testing was attempted at the site, with locals preventing the agency from conducting preliminary investigations. In a letter dated July 16, the deputy chief engineer (construction), Hubballi division of railways, informed the Belagavi DC that the dept intends to proceed with the approved straight alignment. The letter states that alternative T-type alignments would violate Indian Roads Congress (IRC) design codes. The required land acquisition of 220.20 square metres was sanctioned on Feb 6. The railways requested the DC's intervention, noting that delays could affect the scheduled commissioning of the project by Dec 2026.

CM Bhagwant Mann: Some BJP leaders jeopardising projects; ‘war on drugs producing results, big fish in Nabha Jail'

Dhuri: Slamming BJP leaders for creating unnecessary obstacles in developmental projects, chief minister Bhagwant Mann on a Sunday asked them to refrain from such cheap tactics. Giving an example while addressing a gathering in Dhuri, the CM said the ministry of railways had approved a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) for the city, the payment for which was to be made by the state govt. However, he said a senior leader of the BJP from the state visited the city, and issued a statement to scuttle the project for his vested political interests. Mann said such theatrics would not be tolerated and the wise people of Punjab would teach a lesson to such political leaders. He announced that the work for this ROB would commence soon, as he would personally take up the matter with the railway minister. He also announced that the state govt would construct an ultra-modern sports stadium at Dhuri. Likewise, Mann said work on the construction of a medical college at Sangrur would commence soon, thereby acting as a catalyst for imparting quality health services to the people. "For youth empowerment, we are setting up eight UPSC coaching centres across Punjab. One such centre will be set up in Dhuri. These centres will be equipped with libraries, hostels, and other essential facilities to provide quality training for national-level competitive exams," he said. TNN

After Bhopal's 90-Degree Flyover, Z-Shaped Railway Overbridge In Indore

After the controversial 90-degree bridge in Bhopal's Aishbagh, a new Railway Over Bridge (ROB) under construction in Indore has triggered a debate and become a matter of concern. The Public Works Department (PWD) is building a Z-shaped bridge near Polo Ground, surprising residents and experts alike with its sharp, 90-degree turns at two points. The ROB, designed to connect Laxmibai Nagar to Polo Ground via Bhagirathpura and MR-4, features a 90-degree angle on the arm from Laxmibai Nagar and another sharp turn towards MR-4. Local truck drivers and industrial representatives fear these turns could become accident hotspots once operational. A truck driver near the railway goods warehouse told NDTV that maneuvering fully loaded vehicles through these sharp turns would prove to be extremely difficult and dangerous. "If an accident happens, we will not be responsible. The government will have to answer," the driver warned, not seeking to be named. Indore MP Shankar Lalwani, who reviewed the bridge map during a government meeting in June, said he has written to the state's Public Works Minister and asked him to change the design. "I have asked the officials to rectify this dangerous turn to prevent potential accidents and traffic chaos," Lalwani said. Amid growing criticism, PWD officials have promised to reassess the design. Executive Engineer Gurmeet Kaur Bhatia said, "We are re-examining the design following concerns raised in the media. Necessary improvements will be made if required." Leaders from the Polo Ground Industrialists Welfare Association have also objected to the construction. President Dhananjay Chinchalkar pointed out the steep slope and sharp turns, emphasising that "accidents are certain" if the current design is implemented. The matter has also taken a politician turn. Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma took a jibe at the state government, saying, "The city's minister must be asleep, or the PWD minister is out of his senses. It looks like Indore engineers are trying to outdo Bhopal's blunder by adding not one but two 90-degree turns." PWD Minister Rakesh Singh, however, clarified that the bridge's design incorporates a turning radius of 20 meters, which, according to him, meets engineering standards. He said: "There is superelevation, and the design speed is set at 20 kmph. Sometimes, we have to adjust to available space." The controversy echoes the fiasco in Bhopal, where the 90-degree Aishbagh ROB attracted public ridicule and led to the suspension of seven engineers, including two chief engineers. As construction continues, Indore's Z-shaped ROB stands as a sharp reminder - both literally and figuratively - of the balance that must be struck between urban planning and public safety.
