FEMA assistance available for tornado victims

At a press conference Saturday afternoon, Laurel County Sheriff John Root shared that FEMA is now in the area to assist residents and business owners affected by the May 16 tornado. Saturday's press conference was led by Sheriff Root and Regional Emergency Management Director Jerry Rains. Donna Baker-McClure, Eastern Kentucky Field Representative for U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell; Dustin Heiser, Assistant Director of Operations with Kentucky Emergency Management; Laurel County Fiscal Court Magistrates Danny Smith and Jeff Book; Trooper Joseph Mallory with Kentucky State Police Post 11; and Jaimie Tomaw of Tomaw Law Office were also present. Tomaw is helping those impacted by guiding them through the legal process, such as obtaining and understanding documents. "FEMA is in town," Sheriff Root stated as he began the press conference. "All you have to do is ask for identification to make sure you're dealing with FEMA representatives. They will provide their identification." Sheriff Root shared that residents seeking assistance can apply online at through the FEMA app, or by calling 1-800-621-3362. In-person help is also available at several locations throughout the county. The Laurel County Public Library, located at 120 College Park Drive, is open for FEMA assistance Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. Additional Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) sites include: — The Walmart Supercenter located at 1851 KY-192, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — The former Food Fair building located at 1812 North Main Street, which is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — The London-Corbin Airport located at 405 Arrow Park Drive, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Wyan-Pine Elementary School located at 2330 Keavy Road, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. "You can also go there for assistance filling out your applications," Root said. Questions related to shelter or housing assistance should be directed to the Disaster Survivor Call Center at 502-607-6665, which operates daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. "If you have any questions, you have anything that you're skeptical about or need some guidance, we have call takers that are on duty manning the phones and we will answer those questions," said Rains. "If we can't answer it, we'll call you back and get you an answer." Volunteers and donations are also being welcomed. "You can do that at the London-Corbin Airport. You can also do that at the staging area, the Wyan-Pine School," Root said. "If you have resources you want to bring in — equipment, help, whatever — please direct those questions there." Rains added that anyone wanting to register as a volunteer or check on donation needs can visit the City of London or Laurel County Fiscal Court Facebook pages for sign-up links. The Emergency Operations Center can also be reached at 606-862-7904, operating daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. "Thank you Laurel County and the City of London for all the support and all the help that we've had up to this point, and we're now just moving down the road going on trying to get everybody back to normal," Rains said in closing.

Chic raincoats to keep you dry and stylish, from £50

It doesn't have to cost a fortune though – there are excellent finds on the high street at Muji, H&M and M&S (in the prettiest pale pink and the chain's own water-repellent Stormwear coating). Just beware garments that are style over substance, and lacking the critical element-fighting features. This kind of information can be found in product descriptions online, and garment tags in store. If it's not declared, it's probably not going to provide much protection. It should also have the kind of details that make it a pleasure to wear: 'Aside from the obvious functional points – taped or welded seams and a coated material to ensure waterproofing – small details take a raincoat from OK to your favourite essential,' says Johanne Dindler, head of design at hit Danish outerwear brand Rains. 'Think smartly placed ventilation to keep it breathable all year round, an adjustable drawstring hood, snap closures on the sleeves to seal out moisture, and a timeless and minimalist design that you actually want to wear.' The Rains Lohja bomber (above left) has a fleece lining for added warmth, or choose something roomy enough to layer a down gilet or jacket underneath, making it winter friendly too. After all, showers don't just happen in April.

Rains opens first Scottish store in Glasgow

Danish brand Rains has hit what it says is a 'milestone' in its retail expansion by strengthening its UK presence with its first Glasgow store. Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and one of its key shopping destinations. The contemporary outerwear lifestyle brand has opened a 100 sq m store there at 203 Ingram Street in the Merchant City neighbourhood. The new space reflects its 'neo-Scandinavian aesthetic [and] is designed to combine its heritage with the energy and vibrancy of the Glaswegian creative community'. Rains opened its first store in the British Isles in 2018 with a landing in London and now has three London locations plus a store in Ireland's capital city, Dublin. It also has longstanding partnerships with Selfridges, Harrods and Fenwick. But opening a standalone in Glasgow is clearly an important move for the brand that offers premium waterproof outerwear, bags and accessories. The debut there isn't only about its style credentials and strong tourist flows as it's 'one of the UK's rainiest cities'. As such, the Glasgow store highlights Rains' key silhouettes alongside fresh seasonal drops 'designed to equip urban explorers for the ever-changing demands of the local climate'. As for the location, it's a prime retail site with other tenants on Ingram Street including END., Polo Ralph Lauren, Cruise, Mulberry, Flannels, Boss, and Emporio Armani. 'It's exciting to launch in a city with such a strong cultural landscape, with world-renowned art and design schools, which is one of the reasons we chose Glasgow as the home to our first Scottish store,' said co-founder and CEO Daniel Brix Hesselager. 'Rains is, after all, a brand that Philip [Lotko] and I created while at design school in Denmark. The store itself showcases our minimalist approach to design; a simple environment ensures our rainwear, bags and accessories attract all the customer's attention.'
