Ponywallahs Facing A Loss Of Rs 2 Crore A Day In Pahalgam

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Tourism in Pahalgam, Kashmir, has plummeted after a terrorist attack, impacting local ponywallahs severely. With only 100 of 6,000 horses are working. The operators cumulatively face losses of Rs 2 crore a day. Pahalgam: The wheels of economy have come to a grinding halt in Kashmir's Pahalgam, since 25 tourists and a local man were shot down by terrorists in the scenic Baisaran Valley. But those who live - the locals - are now facing a massive crisis. The brunt of this is borne by ponywallahs, one of whom was killed by the terrorists when he tried to save the rider of his horse. Ever since the April 22 terror attack, tourists are cancelling bookings en masse. Of the 6.000 horses in Pahalgam, only 100 have work. According to an estimate, the pony tour operators and pony handlers are cumulatively facing a loss of Rs 2 crore every day in Pahalgam, found the NDTV team that visited the area. Rais, who is associated with one of the five local horse associations, said altogether, horse owners are facing a loss of Rs 2 crore every day. In summer, the area sees lakhs of tourists a day, who visit the nearby valleys and other scenic spots on horseback. But after the attack, bookings in the area have practically been wiped out. 6,000 horses, only 100 have work! Currently, there are about 6,000 horses in Pahalgam, of which only 1,900 have licenses. For the last few years, the licensing process by the government has been slow, due to which new licenses have not been given. During the season, horse owners earn Rs 3,000 per horse, but at this time, of the 6,000 horses, only a hundred have work. A horse costs Rs 1 lakh, food Rs 400 a day The cost of a horse is around Rs 1 lakh and sometimes horses are bought on EMI. Generally, a horse can work from the age of five years to 18 years. The minimum cost of food and water for a horse is Rs 400 per day. But as the age of the horse increases, the cost of its treatment increases. Sometimes this cost goes up to Rs 1,500 a day. There are five horse operators' associations in Pahalgam and each person is allowed to keep two horses. Cost of Hiring Horses in Pahalgam Horsemen charge Rs 1,300 to take tourists from Pahalgam to Baisaran Valley. The full package for visiting 4 locations in Pahalgam -- Pahalgam, Baisaran Valley, Kashmir Valley, Dabyain, Deno Valley -- is Rs 2,420 per person. The cost goes up if there are any detours. The charge for that is Rs 400 for each hour. About 1 lakh local people work with horses as handlers and operators, and it is the only source of income for their families. The tourist season is mainly in summer -- but when Amarnath Yatra begins, pilgrims start coming. Over the last few years, a fair number of people also came in December and January to enjoy the snow.

No Reports Of Abandoned MyKiosk Stalls In Melaka

GENERAL MELAKA, May 16 (Bernama) -- There have been no reports of abandoned or unused stalls under the MyKiosk@KPKT initiative in Melaka, despite claims made elsewhere. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said demand for MyKiosk units in Melaka remains strong, particularly in areas under the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB). 'I'm not sure why the MyKiosk initiative is said to be failing in other places, but here in Melaka, the situation is under control. A few units may not have opened yet, but this isn't a major issue,' he said. He estimated that only 10 to 15 per cent of the stalls have yet to be occupied and expected these to be taken up soon. He pointed to a recent MBMB interview session that drew 75 applicants for just 30 available units as evidence of demand. Rais, also the Paya Rumput state assemblyman, was speaking to reporters after officiating the Teacher's Day celebration at Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Rumput, where he presented the Alumni Teacher Recognition Award. He added that several units that appear closed are already allocated to traders who are still preparing to begin operations. The MyKiosk@KPKT initiative, led by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), has previously faced criticism, with some labelling it a 'white elephant' project. However, Rais dismissed that characterisation, highlighting the programme's aim to support the B40 income group and small businesses by offering low-rent, standardised kiosks that are safe and functional. As of last December, 7,243 MyKiosk units had been approved across 133 local authorities nationwide, benefiting over 7,000 families by helping them boost their incomes.

PM Anwar says Tatarstan has enormous potential, ready to develop ties with it

KAZAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Republic of Tatarstan has enormous potential and that Malaysia is ready to discuss trade and economic issues with it, such as Islamic banking and the halal industry in Kazan, the capital of the republic. As of 2022, the population of Tatarstan stood at 3.9 million people, comprising more than 70 ethnic groups, with more than 50 per cent of the population being Muslim. The prime minister said Malaysia is ready to work and develop ties with the republic, which is part of the Russian Federation. 'I believe that Tatarstan has enormous potential, (there is) a large number of proposals. We are ready to work and develop our ties,' Anwar said during a meeting with the Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. The meeting was held in the Kazan Kremlin and was attended by the Prime Minister of Tatarstan Alexey Pesoshin, the Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Roman Marshavin, representatives of ministries and departments and heads of major machine-building enterprises. Anwar led a delegation that comprises Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Li Kang; Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir; and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani as well as Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. Meanwhile, Rustam, in a media statement, said that Anwar's visit to Kazan was a significant event. 'We are very glad to see you. Your visit encourages us to work even more actively. Our contacts should be more intensive,' he said, thanking Anwar for visiting Tatarstan and his participation in the Kazan Forum 2025. 'It is gratifying that a solid delegation of business circles is participating in the forum with you. The Kazan Forum has been held with federal status for three years now and is the main platform for establishing cooperation between Russia and the countries of the Muslim world. 'It is also a great honour for us that you participate in the meeting of the strategic vision group of the Russia-Islamic World (of the forum)', said Rustam. The Rais also thanked Anwar for the support provided by Malaysia, and emphasised that Tatarstan attaches great importance to the development of cooperation with Malaysia within the framework of friendly Russian-Malaysian relations. There is an increase in mutual trade turnover, ties are developing in agriculture, oil and gas and petrochemical sectors, IT technologies and in several other areas, he added. 'Our republic is a pilot region for the implementation of the principles of Islamic (partnership) banking and financing in Russia. We are also doing a lot of work in terms of developing the halal industry. These are also promising areas for our cooperation. Our colleagues from Malaysia provide us with great support. We learn from you, adopt the best practices,' said the Rais. Earlier, the Rais also presented the Malaysian Prime Minister with an English-language collection of poems by the classic poet of Tatar literature, Gabdulla Tukai. Anwar's official visit to Russia started in Moscow on May 13 and will end tomorrow. The Republic of Tatarstan is located on the eastern frontier of Europe at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers, with a distance from Moscow of 797 km. It covers a territory of 68,000 km², which is roughly the size of countries such as Ireland, Lithuania or Sri Lanka. The Volga River is one of Russia's most prominent watercourses, whose meandering presence through Tatarstan not only enhances the region's natural splendour but also holds significant economic importance. Tatarstan is also famous for a UNESCO site, the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex, which was once the capital of Volga Bulgaria and now serves as a pilgrimage site for Muslims and a treasure trove for history lovers. The region's main source of wealth is oil, with a strong petrochemical industry. -- BERNAMA TAGS: Anwar Ibrahim, Tatarstan, Rais of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Kazan Forum, Islamic banking, halal industry.

Melaka urges ministry to act on long-delayed waste project

MELAKA: The Melaka government has urged the Housing and Local Government Ministry to expedite approvals for the long-delayed waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Sungai Udang, which has been stalled for over three years. State housing, local government, drainage, climate change and disaster management committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said all state-level matters, including land issues and coordination with local authorities, have already been resolved. However, he said, the project remains delayed at the federal level due to pending decisions on budget allocation and tender processes. 'We're still waiting for a clear sign from the ministry, such as a ground-breaking date. I will continue pushing to get this project moving,' he told reporters at the Sungai Udang constituency's Hari Raya open house yesterday. Rais said the WTE plant, located at the Sungai Udang Sanitary Solid Waste Landfill, is expected to begin construction by June 2024 and reach completion by 2028, as previously stated by the ministry. On Friday, Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam urged both the state and federal governments to act swiftly, warning that further delays could exacerbate conditions at the landfill and heighten public concern. In addition to the WTE project, Rais said a new landfill cell is being planned at the site to support future solid waste management needs, Bernama reported. The project received federal funding and is undergoing an environmental impact assessment, he added. The Sungai Udang state assembly coordinator also said that the plans to develop a dedicated disposal site at the same location for construction, commercial, industrial and institutional waste. 'These initiatives aim to extend the lifespan of Melaka's sole solid waste facility,' he noted. Earlier, Rais said the constituency's Raya open house at the Sungai Udang Agricultural Technology Complex drew around 10,000 visitors.
