30 years on, another attempt in works to save Upper Lake now mocked by weeds

Bhopal: Nearly three decades after the Japan-funded Bhoj Wetland Project brought Rs 2,100 crore worth of conservation efforts to Bhopal's lakes, the city is preparing a new rejuvenation plan for Upper Lake—at roughly one-third the cost. This marks the first integrated restoration initiative for Bada Talab in 30 years. Led by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) in collaboration with EPCO, the plan is being shaped by experts from SPA Bhopal and MANIT. Environmental Planning and Coordination Organisation (EPCO) established in 1981 and which functions as an advisory body on ecological and sustainability issues, to integrate environmental planning into Madhya Pradesh's development process. Bada Talab, the manmade lake built by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century, remains India's only artificial water body still capable of supplying potable water. Over the years, it has suffered from unchecked weed growth, siltation, and pollution. De-weeding, particularly along the Bhopal–Sehore stretch, is a priority, as the Kolans River—one of the lake's main feeders—has become choked with nutrient-rich sediment. BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan said a preliminary plan has been submitted to EPCO, which is serving as the nodal agency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo "Experts from MANIT and SPA are formalizing the integrated development plan. It will be submitted to the union govt for funding approval as part of the national initiative to preserve UNESCO Ramsar sites," he said. The plan includes lake and river restoration, water treatment, catchment protection, and infrastructure upgrades around sensitive zones. Officials hope the project will not only restore Bada Talab's ecological balance but also reinforce its Ramsar site status and viability as a drinking water source. From AI to Ganga: New NCERT hindi book blends space, spirituality, storytelling

By Vishu Adhana New Delhi [India], July 15 (ANI): The new Class 5 NCERT Hindi textbook is taking students on a journey like never before from the world of Artificial Intelligence and space missions to the flowing story of the Ganga, its sacred journey across India, and the cultural life along its banks. Recently released by the NCERT for the 2025-26 academic year, the textbook titled 'Veena' has been developed in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to connect students with both India's scientific future and its civilisational roots. One of the standout chapters, 'Ganga ki Kahani,' captures the river's journey from Gomukh to Gangasagar, taking readers through places like Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Kolkata. It offers more than just geography, narrating tales of ashrams, sadhus, and the grandeur of the Kumbh Mela, while also introducing cities like Patna and Kanpur, blending cultural, spiritual, and economic perspectives. In sharp contrast, but equally engaging, the chapter titled 'AI' introduces students to the basics of Artificial Intelligence, how machines are trained to think, learn, and problem-solve like humans. It's designed to spark curiosity and scientific thinking among middle schoolers. The 'Gaganyaan' chapter, written in a conversational style, brings India's human spaceflight mission to life. It explains ISRO's ambitions, introduces students to the humanoid robot Vyommitra, and discusses the future of Indian space exploration. Moral reasoning and civic learning also find space. 'Nyay Ki Kursi' uses historical figures like Raja Bhoj and Vikramaditya to explain justice and fairness. 'Haathi aur Cheenti' teaches children about road safety and helmet use through a clever animal story. Other chapters spotlight Kaziranga National Park, Ajanta and Ellora, natural colour making, and Paralympic champion Murlikant Petkar, encouraging empathy, creativity, and national pride. NCERT has begun rolling out newly updated textbooks for several classes as part of its curriculum revision. While some books have already been released, the remaining ones are expected to be launched by the end of the year. (ANI)

CM lays stone for ‘Bhoj-Narmada Dwar', inaugurates 10MW solar plant in Neemuch

Bhopal : CM Mohan Yadav on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the ' Bhoj-Narmada Dwar ' at Samardha on Narmadapuram Road in Bhopal, calling it a step towards reconnecting today's youth with the state's rich cultural legacy. Yadav said his govt was committed to shaping a bright future by drawing from the glories of the past. "The glorious legacy of Raja Bhoj and other eminent figures has been included in school curricula," he said at a public gathering on the occasion of the foundation laying ceremony for the "Bhoj-Narmada Dwar" at Samardha on the Narmadapuram Road. During the event, he also virtually inaugurated the 10-megawatt solar power plant established by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Neemuch. The CM noted that as the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal would serve as an expression of the region's diverse culture and history. "The nine grand gateways to be built on Bhopal's major entry roads will depict significant historical and cultural references, including key pilgrimage sites along the banks of the river Narmada." He cited the 'Mahamrityunjay Dwar' in Ujjain, which artistically presents the city's rich history and milestones across different eras. Besides, Yadav highlighted the intellect, valour, and achievements of Raja Bhoj. Referring to India's victory in Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, the CM praised PM Narendra Modi's leadership and the bravery of the armed forces. He applauded Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh for powerfully representing women's strength through their roles in the operation. Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said under the leadership of Yadav, the state was not only striving for self-reliance as a state but also aiming to make municipal corporations and councils self-sufficient. "The establishment of a solar power plant by Bhopal Municipal Corporation in Neemuch is a strong step in that direction." Bhopal mayor Malti Rai said the "Bhoj-Narmada Dwar" would be constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore. Besides, she said electricity generated from the solar panels installed in Neemuch would be utilised for operating Bhopal's water supply system.
