Allegations fly thick and fast after Dharmasthala clashes: 7 FIRs filed against local residents, journalists

The Karnataka Police registered seven FIRs hours after clashes that took place over alleged partisan media coverage of the Dharmasthala secret burial case near the town and neighbouring Ujire in the Dakshina Kannada district Wednesday evening. While four FIRs are registered at the Dharmasthala police station in connection with the assault on YouTubers, three were registered at the Belthangady police station. The clashes took place amid inspections being carried out in Dharmasthala by a Special Investigation Team, formed after a whistleblower filed a police complaint claiming that he had been forced to bury several bodies of alleged sexual assault and murder victims in the temple town. The first of the seven FIRs was based on a complaint filed by Ajay Anchan of the Kudla Rampage YouTube channel. He told The Indian Express that he was covering the visit of a TV personality to the house of a teenage college student who was allegedly raped and murdered in 2012. 'TV personality Rajath had gone to her house, and we were there to meet him. He told us that he was getting late and would meet us midway. At Pangala Cross, we stopped and took his response. As soon as it was over, some people came there and complained that I was talking about (BJP MP and secretary of the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society) D Veerendra Heggade and Dharmasthala,' said Anchan. 'When I asked them to give details about the defamatory comments made by me, they turned irate. The members in the group said that their 'dhani' had asked them to break our hands and legs, and started assaulting me and others,' he added. Meanwhile, the police in a release said, 'Around 15-20 miscreants attacked the complainant, cameraman Suhas, Santosh of Sanchari Studio and Abhishek of United Media.' The police booked the accused under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt, among others. The second FIR was filed against residents of Dharmasthala for refusing to disperse from the spot despite directions from the police. The third was against the residents for staging a protest in front of the Dharmasthala police station without any prior permission from the authorities. Another FIR was for the alleged attack on one Pramod Kumar Shetty by a group of 30-40 people claiming to be 'supporters of Dharmasthala'. The first of the three FIRs registered at the Belthangady police station was for an alleged assault on the reporter of a Kannada news channel by supporters of a group formed to seek justice in the 2012 rape-murder case. Harish R, a reporter of Asianet Suvarna News, claimed that activists Girish Mattannavar and Mahesh Shetty, YouTuber Sameer MD, Jayanth T and several other unidentified people attacked him when he went to a hospital to cover the attack on YouTubers. The group allegedly assaulted the reporter after recognising the logo of his channel. They punched him in the face and shoved him around, according to the FIR. A counter FIR at the station alleged that the reporter had hurled abuse at the activists and supporters of the YouTubers who were allegedly assaulted near Dharmasthala. The FIR named Asianet Suvarna News anchor Ajit Hanumakkanavar, accusing him of broadcasting false news claiming that Shetty had attacked the reporter. The last FIR was against the group seeking justice for the college student group for unlawful assembly in front of the hospital at Ujire. Responding to the clashes, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara told reporters at Bengaluru that he has sought a report from the police regarding the cause of the incident Meanwhile, the police stepped up security at Ujire and Dharmasthala following the incident. The SIT probing allegations of secret burials in Dharmasthala Wednesday visited the grama panchayat office in the temple town, including those related to staff who worked there from 1998 to 2014, when the alleged murders and secret burials took place. Since July 29, SIT officials have dug up 12 of the 13 sites the whistleblower cited in his complaint. They found fragments of a skeleton on the third day of the inspection and portions of another skeleton on Monday. They were expected to inspect spot 13 Thursday.

Tension erupts in Dharmasthala as YouTubers, journalists attacked while covering mass burial case

MANGALURU: A group of men allegedly assaulted several YouTubers covering the ongoing Dharmasthala mass burial case on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near the residence of the late Sowjanya in Pangala, where a Bigg Boss contestant, Rajath, had visited the family. The YouTubers, including Ajay Anchan of 'Kudla Rampage', had arrived to seek reactions when a group confronted them, accusing them of spreading misleading reports about the investigation. A heated argument escalated into violence, with at least three YouTubers reportedly manhandled and their camera equipment damaged. Police intervened with a lathi charge to disperse the crowd, and the injured were taken to a hospital in Ujire. Meanwhile, supporters of the victims gathered outside the hospital, demanding justice. In a separate incident, a Kannada news channel reporter and cameraman were allegedly assaulted near the hospital, further intensifying tensions. Protests also erupted outside the Dharmasthala police station, with demonstrators condemning what they called "conspiracies" against Dharmasthala. Authorities have deployed additional police forces to maintain order as the situation remains volatile. A case has been registered at the Dharmasthala police station.

Bengaluru commuters slam ‘unscientific' traffic signals on Outer Ring Road, seek police fix

Daily traffic gridlocks along the city's Outer Ring Road (ORR) have become a frustrating routine for commuters, and now, a new concern has surfaced—poorly calibrated traffic signals adding to the chaos. A Bengaluru commuter claims that a few traffic lights on ORR are unscientific Also Read - 'What North Indians think…': Bengaluru woman's viral reel on language row gets laughs on social media. Watch Take a look at the post A commuter recently took to social media to call out what he described as 'unscientific signal lighting' at the 19th Main Road exit towards ORR, claiming it was worsening traffic snarls on an already congested stretch. The post triggered a wave of similar complaints from fellow road users, many of whom echoed the sentiment. In his widely-shared post on X (formerly Twitter), a user named Rajath wrote, 'Congratulations @blrcitytraffic and @hsrltrafficps—you've installed yet another completely unscientific set of traffic lights. The signal changes from green to red before any vehicle can even complete a turn. When it's green, the intersection is still clogged with leftover traffic. Earlier, your staff managed this manually, and it worked better. Now, two personnel operate the lights and two others are left requesting drivers to stop or go. What a mess! You've made us lose the will to live.' Rajath's post struck a chord with other Bengaluru residents who chimed in with similar experiences from across the city. 'This happens at a junction near Kendriya Vidyalaya between Lower Agara and Command Hospital,' another user wrote. 'The lights are too far from the junction, and they don't account for the actual stop line. It's completely misaligned.' Another frustrated commuter remarked that he has decided to avoid HSR Layout altogether, even if Google Maps suggests the route. Also Read - Bengaluru-based Instagram page under fire for filming women on streets without consent, admin arrested 'Once, I had to make a U-turn at 27th Main because police had blocked the right turn at ORR due to traffic jam. It's just not worth the hassle anymore.' A third user questioned the overall traffic signal logic across Bengaluru. 'Why do all major signals take multiple minutes to change? That just results in large clumps of vehicles moving together, which slows everything down. Shorter signal durations could allow smoother flow by moving smaller batches of vehicles.' While traffic congestion along the ORR, especially near Bellandur, HSR Layout, and Agara, has long been a headache, complaints like these add to concerns over signal automation and traffic planning. Despite repeated calls for improved traffic management and smarter signal systems, commuters say little has changed on the ground.

Potholes and unscientific speed breakers ruin fun: Highs and lows of owning supercar in Bengaluru

Image Credit: TOI/Mini Thomas Potholes and unscientific speed breakers ruin the fun of driving supercars in Bengaluru. BENGALURU: Vrooming in a supercar in Bengaluru could turn into an unpleasant experience within seconds. 'Potholes, oversized speedbreakers, and poorly designed dividers lacking reflectors present significant challenges. These become particularly problematic for supercars which typically have low ground clearance,' says Rajath KK, 23, who owns a BMW M6. Many Bengalureans today can afford high-performance supercars and have the passion to drive them, but the limitations are many. Night drives are safer, says Rajath, who lives in Abbigere in Jalahalli and runs an interior design company. Image Credit: TOI/Mini Thomas 'Navigating the city requires careful planning. I drive during early morning hours or late at night for several reasons – heavy traffic congestion in the city, local residents' reactions, and unpredictable lane changes by other motorists,' he says. Waterlogging is another big concern, especially during the monsoon season. 'We invest considerable resources in purchasing and modifying these vehicles, and any damage would result in substantial repair costs,' Rajath says. Zubair Ali Jung, who drives around Bengaluru in his Audi 8, notes that supercar owners pay premium road taxes, but have to settle for potholes and uneven surfaces that severely impact the driving experience. Rajath pleads that supercar and bike owners are a misunder stood lot. 'High-performance exhausts in our vehicles are not merely aesthetic additions but crucial components that enhance vehicle performance and functionality,' he says. The turn on For all their complaints, supercar owners also have their many moments of joy. 'The roar of my supercar's V-10 engine gives me a high, with the intake and exhaust notes turning me on,' says A R Shabbir, businessman and racer who owns a Lamborghini. Rajath looks forward to car enthusiast gatherings, which are gaining popularity. Team Clutches, a group founded by him, hosts meetups and car shows. He is a regular at events organized by 6th Gear and Htrz Modz too. The events, he says, foster a sense of community amongst fellow enthusiasts. Zubair also loves meeting new people. The 36-year-old, nicknamed Spiderman by his friends, says owning a supercar can broaden one's social connections. 'It feels great to be part of a community of enthusiasts. When we glide into these beauties and cruise together, it creates wonderful moments of happiness and camaraderie,' smiles Jung, who is part of groups like Team1 Racing and Team Clutches. At these gatherings, participants share knowledge and collaborate on shared objectives. The supercar market in India is unorganised. Interactions with other car enthusiasts helps one gain valuable insights on what needs to be sold or bought. Aditya Arora, founder of Boit Club and who has been a supercar owner for the last 14 years, says they regularly coordinate social gatherings and facilitate new vehicle unveiling ceremonies. A specialised 3D animation facility that he offers helps create detailed visualisations of supercar modifications prior to actual implementation.
