Tiger mauls calf near Bittangala in Virajpet
Madikeri: A tiger killed a calf that was left to graze at Nangala village near Bittangala in Virajpet taluk on Saturday morning.
Rajendra Kamath, a lawyer from Virajpet, had left a two-year-old native breed of Kankrej calf in his field.
At 9.30am, the tiger attacked and killed the calf. Later, the big cat partially fed on the victim and fled from the spot.
The incident came to light when Kamath's workers went to the spot, after which the foresters were informed. Ever since the attack, the villagers are living in fear. The villagers said the movement of the tiger was seen frequently in this area for the past few days.
Forest officials have appealed to people in and around Nangala, especially school- and college-going children, to be careful.
There have been incidents of tigers camping in coffee plantations in the area and attacking/ killing livestock.
