India police bust racket of fake life-saving drugs under label of top brands

Delhi Police have busted a medicine racket making counterfeit life-saving drugs using the names of big pharma companies such Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithKline. Six people, including the main accused, Rajesh Mishra, have been arrested, police said. During the raids, authorities reportedly seized around 150kg of loose tablets, 20kg of capsules, and thousands of counterfeit branded drugs, including 9,000 fake Ultracet tablets and 6,100 fake Augmentin 625 tablets. Two illicit manufacturing units at the heart of the operation were uncovered in Jind in Haryana, and Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, authorities said. According to police, the counterfeit drug ring operated through an extensive network spanning multiple Indian states, with hubs in Moradabad, Deoria, and Gorakhpur in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and in Panipat and Jind in Haryana, and Baddi and Solan in Himachal Pradesh. The gang used encrypted apps and fake bank accounts to run the business, police told the media. 'The syndicate used social media platforms to initiate contact with new suppliers and customers. Communications were carried out through encrypted messaging platforms, and payments were routed via hawala and fictitious accounts to avoid detection,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said, according to The Indian Express. Mr Mishra, the alleged kingpin, who had experience in the pharma industry, copied real packaging to make the fake medicines look genuine, police said. The breakthrough came after police received a tip-off from an informant about a major consignment of counterfeit medicines headed to Delhi. Police said that their team laid a trap at a petrol pump in Civil Lines in north Delhi on 30 July. DCP Indora said that experts from Johnson & Johnson and GSK, who were called in to inspect the seized stock, confirmed the medicines were counterfeit. Follow-up raids, triggered by information provided by the accused, exposed a vast and well-organised supply network spanning multiple states and involving several players, Mr Indora said. This is not the first time counterfeit drugs have been confiscated in India. Over the past few years, authorities across various states have repeatedly uncovered fake medicine rackets, many involving life-saving drugs. In July this year, police in Uttarakhand arrested Devi Dayal Gupta, owner of Dr Mittal Laboratories Pvt Ltd in Delhi, who was allegedly the mastermind behind a multi-million counterfeit drug racket operating across India for four years. His arrest followed the earlier detention of three accomplices and the seizure of fake packaging materials of reputed pharmaceutical brands, The New Indian Express reported. Mr Gupta's factory allegedly produced over 14.2m fake tablets and 2,00,000 capsules, including counterfeit versions of widely used medicines. Last year, another fake drug racket that operated from two flats at DLF Capital Greens in West Delhi's Moti Nagar was uncovered by Delhi Police Crime Branch and the Delhi government's drug control department. Seven individuals, including staff from hospitals in Delhi and Gurgaon, were arrested in connection with the racket. Authorities seized over 140 vials of counterfeit medication, worth nearly Rs40m in the open market, along with sealing machines, packaging material, labelled vials, printed inserts, and rubber seals. According to drug control officials, the accused 'used disposable syringes to fill innocuous substances into the vials, which were manually sealed and sold to unscrupulous dealers'.

Delhi Police busts major fake medicine racket; 6 arrested including kingpin

The Anti-Gang Squad of the Crime Branch of Delhi Police has busted a major interstate racket involved in the manufacturing, selling, and supplying of counterfeit lifesaving medicines. In this significant operation, six people have been arrested, including the kingpin Rajesh Mishra. The racket had a wide network operating across several states, including Moradabad, Deoria, and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh; Panipat and Jind in Haryana; and Baddi and Solan in Himachal Pradesh. Two illegal manufacturing and packaging factories were busted in Jind, Haryana and in Baddi, Himachal fake medicines were being sold under the names of reputed pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson, GSK, and Alkem. The accused operated in a discreet and organised manner, communicating through encrypted apps and managing money transactions via fictitious accounts and hawala channels. The breakthrough came when Head Constable Jitendra received a tip-off from an informer about a large consignment of fake medicines arriving in Delhi. Acting swiftly on this input, a trap was laid at a petrol pump in Civil Lines on July 30. A WagonR car with a UP registration was intercepted, leading to the arrest of Mohammad Alam and Mohammad Salim, both residents of Moradabad. A large quantity of fake Ultracet and Augmentin tablets was recovered from the vehicle. Representatives from Johnson & Johnson and GSK, who were present at the spot, confirmed the packaging and stamping were counterfeit, which was later validated through lab revealed that the accused had initially made contact through social media platforms like Facebook. The packaging boxes for fake medicines were sourced from different locations, while foil and blister packing materials were ordered from Baddi. The counterfeit drugs were manufactured in factories located in Jind and Baddi, and distributed by road and rail across various regions. Money from the operations was received through fake bank accounts and hawala transactions. Mohammad Alam was primarily responsible for supplying the fake medicines in the NCR region, assisted by his brother Mohammad Salim in transportation and logistics. Another accused, Mohammad Zubair from Moradabad, was identified as a key supplier, with his involvement confirmed through WhatsApp conversations and financial records. Prem Shankar Prajapati from Deoria handled the movement of drugs from the manufacturing units to the distributors, while Rajesh Mishra from Gorakhpur was identified as the mastermind behind the entire operation, overseeing the production and network management. Parmanand from Jind ran a unit named 'Laxmi Maa Pharma,' where fake Ultracet tablets were being manufactured. - EndsTrending Reel

Ludhiana BJP councillors' protest continues as MC officials get irritated by noise.

Ludhiana: A political standoff at municipal corporation's Zone D office entered its sixth day on Wednesday, with BJP councillors staging ongoing protests and officials expressing frustration over disrupted civic functioning. Despite whispers of a possible thaw in relations between the BJP councillors and mayor Inderjit Kaur, no breakthrough has been made. The mayor has not visited the Zone D office since Aug 1, adding to speculation over her role in resolving the deadlock. Meanwhile, deputy mayor Prince Johar made an appearance late on Tuesday and reportedly held discussions with the other side to defuse tensions. Sources said AAP MLAs and the mayor had convened a closed-door meeting in Zone A to address the issue, but no official statement has emerged from that meeting. Municipal staffers, strained increasingly by the noise and chaos, say the daily protests have paralysed office work. "We're struggling to function. Loudspeakers drown everything out. Something needs to change," said one senior official. On Wednesday, BJP leaders extended the protest to various wards, including a fresh demonstration in Ward 34 led by Rajesh Mishra, and others by Pallavi Vipan Vinayak (Ward 3), Suman Verma (Ward 70), and Sunil Modgil (Ward 62). Protesters accused the AAP-led civic body of neglect and misleading development claims. Rajesh Mishra highlighted the acute shortage of sanitation and sewerage workers, which has led to piles of garbage, choked drains, and damaged roads across several neighbourhoods including Gurmeet Nagar and Gagan Nagar. "Dirty water flows in the streets. Complaints fall on deaf ears. People are furious," he said. Councillor Suman Verma added that roads dug up a month ago remained unrepaired. "Why did they tear up main roads just before the monsoon? Now we've got craters instead of streets. People are falling and getting injured, and officials are nowhere," she said. With public services stalling and no resolution in sight, the civic impasse continues to raise concerns about governance and basic infrastructure delivery in Ludhiana. MSID:: 123143967 413 |

Chandrasekhar Azads pistol BamtooL Bukhara displayed in Allahabad Museum

Last Updated: Prayagraj, Jul 23 (PTI) On the 119th birth anniversary of legendary freedom fighter Chandrasekhar Azad, his pistol — Bamtul Bukhara — was displayed for the public at the Allahabad Museum on Wednesday. Allahabad Museum Director Dr. Rajesh Mishra said that the original pistol was exhibited for the public after nearly 22 months. Due to the lack of proper security arrangements, a replica of the pistol is usually placed in the 'Azad Gallery' of the museum. 'The original pistol requires Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) protection. A request has already been sent to the Ministry in this regard," Mishra said, adding that the pistol is currently kept in a secure location within the museum. Floral tributes were also offered at the statue of Chandrasekhar Azad as part of the observance. On the occasion, historian Professor Yogeshwar Tiwari highlighted Azad's significant role in India's freedom struggle. PTI RAJ KIS NB NB Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
