India's July palm oil imports drop as soyoil shipments surge, dealers say
MUMBAI: India's palm oil imports fell in July because of cancellations in import contracts, while soyoil shipments surged to a 3-year high due to competitive prices and the delivery of delayed shipments from June, according to five dealers. Lower palm oil imports by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could lead to a stock buildup in top producers Indonesia and Malaysia and weigh on benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures. In July, palm oil imports declined by 10% to 858,000 metric tons, down from June's 11-month high, according to estimates from dealers. Soyoil imports in July surged 38% month-on-month to 495,000 tons, the highest level in three years. The increase was a result of vessels finally discharging their cargo in July after being delayed by congestion at Gujarat's Kandla port in June, they said. Sunflower oil imports fell 7% to 201,000 tons, dealers estimated. Higher imports of soyoil lifted India's total edible oil imports in July by 1.5% to 1.53 million tons from a month earlier, the highest level since November, according to dealers' estimates. Palm oil slips over concerns of rising output, stocks The import numbers exclude duty-free shipments that arrived via land borders from Nepal, they said. After buying less edible oil than usual in the first half of 2025, India is now increasing imports to meet rising demand ahead of the upcoming festive season, said Aashish Acharya, vice president at Patanjali Foods Ltd, a leading importer of edible oils. In India, edible oil demand, particularly for palm oil, typically rises during the festival season due to increased consumption of sweets and fried foods. Even in the coming months, imports will remain robust as refiners try to replenish their inventories, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader. India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. Nepal's edible oil imports were 83,000 tons in July, up from 75,000 tons in June, GGN Research estimated.

Surat's smooth-coated otters set to make Delhi Zoo their new home
Surat: Soon, Delhi Zoo will welcome a pair of smooth-coated otters from Sarthana Zoo, while the Diamond City's zoo will receive five Sangai deer — popularly known as Manipur deer — and a pair of macaws in return. Preparations for the exchange are in full swing, with zoo officials timing the transfer for the monsoon season, which offers safe and comfortable conditions for the animals during their road journey. "We are making arrangements to transport the otters and to receive the deer from Delhi Zoo. Transportation will be done by road, and we already have the basic infrastructure in place," said Rajesh Patel, zoo superintendent. The zoo will receive three female and two male Sangai deer, which will be transported in specially designed cages to ensure their safety. Patel added that the exchange had been under discussion for months, but the zoo waited for the moderate weather of monsoon, as animals face health risks during the intense summer heat. Currently, Sarthana Zoo houses 54 species, including 490 mammals, birds, and reptiles. It holds a unique distinction as the only zoo in India with a successful smooth-coated otter breeding program. Since breeding began in 2008, the zoo has seen 41 otter pups born, and 19 otters exchanged with other zoos, bringing 31 different species to the city's collection. In total, Sarthana Zoo has received 79 animals and birds in exchange for otters, a testament to the value of its breeding program. In another upcoming exchange, the zoo will send a six-year-old female hippopotamus, born at the zoo, to Indore Zoo in exchange for a four-year-old male Royal Bengal tiger. Currently, the zoo has one 14-year-old male tiger, and the addition of new tigers from Indore and Bhubaneshwar zoos is expected to pave the way for a tiger breeding program in Surat. India's June palm oil imports jump 60% to hit 11-month high
MUMBAI: India's palm oil imports jumped to an 11-month high in June as refiners ramped up purchases due to a price discount compared to rival soyoil and sunflower oil, and to replenish depleted inventories, an industry body said on Monday. Higher palm oil imports by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, will help bring down stocks in top producers Indonesia and Malaysia and support benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures. Palm oil imports in June rose more than 60% from May to 955,683 metric tons, the highest since July 2024, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said. Imports of soyoil decreased 9.8% to 359,504 tons and sunflower oil imports rose 17.8% to 216,141 tons, the industry body said. Domestic vegetable oil stocks rose for the first time in seven months to 1.568 million tons on July 1, up from last month's 1.33 million tons, which was the lowest level in nearly five years, it said. India's May palm oil imports jump 87% to six-month high, dealers say Palm oil imports are likely to remain above 900,000 tons for the second straight month in July as the oil is available at a discount to rival oils, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader. Soyoil imports would likely increase to approximately 450,000 tons in July, as vessels that were unable to unload at Kandla port in the western state of Gujarat during June were expected to discharge their cargo this month, Patel said. India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. In May, India halved the basic import tax on crude edible oils to 10% in a bid to reduce food prices and help the domestic refining industry.
