This Iconic Carolina Furniture Store Is Closing After 41 Years

After more than four decades in business, Carolina Furniture Direct is calling it quits. The Raleigh-based furniture retailer, located at 8401 Glenwood Ave., is going out of business after 41 years. The closure marks the end of an era for the 30,000-square-foot showroom that's been a fixture in the community since the early 1980s. WRAL reported that the massive liquidation sale begins May 22, with all merchandise marked down by up to 50%. Brands on offer include high-quality names like Bassett, Vaughan-Bassett, England, Leather Italia, Riverside, Coast to Coast, Hickorycraft, and even Tommy Bahama. Both custom and ready-made furnishings are part of the clearance. Ken Ciotti, a manager at the store, said the decision to close stems from the owner's upcoming retirement. He did not provide a specific final day for the store but emphasized that everything must go. Over the years, Carolina Furniture Direct built a reputation for offering a wide selection of home furnishings with a blend of upscale and affordable options. While national chains and online retailers chipped away at the brick-and-mortar furniture business, the Glenwood Avenue location remained a go-to for locals looking for personalized service and long-lasting pieces. Now, with the announcement of its closure, Carolina Furniture Direct joins a growing list of independent retailers shutting down amid shifting industry trends, supply chain changes, and leadership transitions. For Raleigh-area shoppers, this is a rare opportunity to score deep discounts on premium furniture before the doors close for good. But with no official end date announced, customers might not want to wait too long—once it's gone, it's gone.

‘Escape artist' dog is a ‘local celebrity' in NC. Now, Cannoli will need a home

A dog has a 'reputation as an escape artist' — and is a 'local celebrity' in North Carolina. Now, the daring pup will need a new owner who makes sure to close their doors. 'He just loves adventure and any opportunity for escape, he'll try and take it,' Martina Spain, his foster mom, told McClatchy News in a May 16 phone interview. 'So, we are extra secure on all of our locks.' The Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina expects Cannoli the dog to be available for adoption around May 21. He was rescued in April, after a woman found him roaming Chatham County roads and pulled over to help, according to Spain and an email from the rescue's marketing coordinator, Leann Tenbusch. 'Though sweet and friendly, Cannoli quickly earned a reputation as an escape artist — he sniffed out every weak spot in fences and managed to slip away from even the most watchful homes,' the Raleigh-area rescue wrote in a Facebook post. Eventually, Cannoli landed with his current foster mom, who lives in an apartment with a layout that makes escapes difficult. He's described as a roughly 2- to 4-year-old pup who 'greets every person like a friend.' 'Cannoli is a young, smart, and extra beagley beagle with a big personality and an even bigger heart,' rescuers wrote. 'He's incredibly vocal, especially on walks, and isn't shy about letting you (and the neighborhood) know what he wants. Luckily, his foster's community loves a good beagle bark, and Cannoli has become something of a local celebrity.' In addition to his barking, Cannoli reached celebrity status in his Durham neighborhood due to his friendliness and walks with his foster mom's well-known beagle, Luna Pearl. Spain said someone even recently recognized him across town. As of May 20, the rescue's website listed Cannoli as being available for adoption soon. Details about the rescue's adoption process can be found at 'Cannoli is adaptable, brave, and affectionate — a perfect mix of silly, snuggly, and smart,' the rescue wrote. 'With the right home that understands the beagle spirit (and a good escape-proof setup!), Cannoli will be the most loyal and loving companion.'
