Hollywood icon sparks fundraising wave at HBCU graduation

Award-winning actress and Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph turned a heartfelt moment into a historic act of giving at Virginia-HBCU Norfolk State University's 2025 graduation commencement ceremony. Her powerful gesture lit a spark that quickly grew into a $25,000 fundraising wave. The excitement began after Senior Class President Zay'Kori Jones gave his final remarks. He shared that the Class of 2025 had raised $4,136 toward their $5,000 goal for the university. That's when Ralph stepped up to help close the gap. Without hesitation, she pledged $1,000-not only meeting but exceeding the amount needed. Her generosity didn't stop there. Moments later, NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston and Bishop Kim Brown, rector of the university's Board of Visitors, each pledged $1,000 as well. Their quick responses sparked something even greater. In just eight minutes, the audience came alive. One by one, hands shot up. Attendees shouted out pledges of $1,000 and even $2,000. By the end, more than $25,000 had been raised-right there in the auditorium. "I was at a loss for words," said Senior Class Vice President Nina Collymore. "I felt so proud, so loved." Jones shared his appreciation, too. "Thank you so much for being so inspirational," he told Ralph. All the money raised will go toward the Senior Class Gift through the Proud to Pay Legacy Book Scholarship Fund. This fund helps future Norfolk State students afford essential textbooks and supplies. "This moment shows how powerful generosity can be," said President Adams-Gaston, Ph.D. "I am thankful to Ms. Ralph and all those who gave from the heart." This unforgettable HBCU graduation moment serves as another example of the enduring influence of HBCU culture and community. Sheryl Lee Ralph's words and actions prove that when celebrity and purpose align, the results can be extraordinary. Norfolk State University and its newest graduates are sure to carry that legacy forward with pride and purpose. Food drones buzzing like 'lawnmowers' over Dubliners' heads could be 'harmful', says Councillor

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Food delivery drones buzzing like "lawnmowers or mopeds" over Dubliners' heads is "not acceptable", according to a Dublin City Councillor. Cabra-Glasnevin Cllr Gayle Ralph has called for an immediate review of how drone delivery trials "align with existing planning and aviation regulations" after Deliveroo announced a new drone delivery trial yesterday with Manna, an established global drone delivery operator. The takeaway app released footage of its first-ever drone delivery — a portion of fresh sushi and sashimi from popular Japanese restaurant Musashi. The service is currently based in Blanchardstown, and Deliveroo say they will use the initial weeks to assess how drones can help serve suburban and harder-to-reach locations. Over the coming days, people in a 3km radius of Blanchardstown will be able to order from selected restaurants including Musashi, WOWBurger, Boojum, and Elephant & Castle. Orders can be flown to customers in as little as three minutes, the food app has claimed. Manna is also looking to trial drone deliveries from a new base in Dublin Industrial Estate in Glasnevin, according to the Dublin Inquirer, with questions persisting over noise, privacy, safety concerns, and what planning permission is needed. Cllr Ralph said there have already been significant complaints from residents in Dublin 15 about drone noise, which has been likened to 'lawnmowers or mopeds,' with reported levels up to 65 decibels. The noise, the Fine Gael rep says, would be particularly disruptive in densely populated areas like Glasnevin. She added that nearby Drumcondra is Ireland's Autism Friendly Town for 2025, and introducing drones would be "simply incompatible with the needs of our neurodiverse community". She said: "The announcement of Deliveroo's partnership with Manna to begin drone deliveries raises a number of concerns for me as a public representative, particularly around safety, noise pollution, and privacy. "While I appreciate the potential innovation drones can bring to logistics and delivery services, we must not allow technological novelty to outpace the regulatory frameworks that protect our communities. Residents in Dublin 15 have already reported significant noise issues, likening the drone sounds to lawnmowers or mopeds. "That's not acceptable in a densely populated city. The presence of cameras on these drones, regardless of their stated purpose, continues to worry many constituents. "We need full transparency and independent verification regarding data protection, especially when such devices operate over residential areas. Drumcondra has proudly been named Ireland's Autism Friendly Town for 2025. "Introducing drones that generate noise levels of up to 65 decibels is simply incompatible with the needs of our neurodiverse community. For autistic residents, many of whom are sensitive to sound, this disruption is not just inconvenient, it is harmful." Cllr Ralph is calling for: A full environmental and community impact assessment before any further expansion of drone delivery trials Mandatory public consultation for all drone delivery operations in Dublin A clear, enforceable framework for drone flight paths, operational hours, noise thresholds, and privacy protections An immediate review of how these trials align with existing planning and aviation regulations. She added: "Innovation must go hand in hand with responsibility. The public is being left somewhat in the dark, with no clear process for feedback or safeguards against noise, safety, and disruption. "Until these concerns are properly addressed, I cannot support the widespread rollout of commercial drones over Dublin's skies." In their announcement of the partnership yesterday, Deliveroo said: "Drone deliveries can significantly cut wait times and reduce emissions, offering a faster and more sustainable alternative to traditional delivery methods, particularly suited to suburban locations where Deliveroo is looking to increase its presence." Chief Business Officer at Deliveroo Carlo Mocci added: 'Our mission is to bring local neighbourhood favourites to as many people's doors as possible, and constantly raise the bar on the experience and service we provide - so I'm thrilled to launch drone deliveries in Dublin today. We're excited to explore how drones can help us reach new customers, complementing our existing rider model and if successful, the prospect of expanding drone deliveries across Ireland and into other markets.' Geraldton Buccaneers look to bounce back at home when they face Joondalup on Saturday

The Geraldton Buccaneers head into round 10 of the NBL1 West this weekend coming off a split road trip, with hopes of bouncing back at home when they face the Joondalup Wolves on Saturday. The Buccs return home after a two-game road trip, which saw them pick up a win on Saturday against Lakeside Lightning before overtime heartbreak on Sunday against the Willetton Tigers. The 20-point win over Lakeside on Saturday night was headlined by Aaron Ralph breaking the all-time three-point record, with the star forward and Buccs' captain securing his record in the first half of the contest. The Buccs fell short on Sunday against Willetton in overtime by four points after injuries prevented the full strength team from being on the court. Buccs' big man Liam Hunt had an impressive weekend with back-to-back double-doubles along with Josh Keyes, who secured a double-double against Willetton, and Johny Narkle, who also drew up big numbers against Lakeside. Despite going down to Willetton in overtime, Hunt said the team was in good spirits after Ralph's record-breaking achievement. 'The spirit is pretty high after Ralphie broke that record and obviously the big win against Lakeside,' he said. 'To go down like that against Willetton is tough but they are a top four team. 'You know, it's heartbreaking, but we have just got to keep learning from our failures. 'We can't play perfect, its not possible, but we want to be perfect in everything we can control.' Hunt said having someone like Ralph at the helm as captain was invaluable to everyone in the group. 'He (Ralph) is just a class player and someone we really value in the group,' Hunt said. 'He knows when players need a rev up and a lift and he always provides it. 'Ralphie is just someone you can rely on to deliver in big moments. 'I don't see his record ever being touched.' Turning their attention to this weened, the Buccs host rivals Joondalup in what promises to be a high octane game with both sides sitting next to each other on the league ladder. The Wolves are coming off a win against the Eastern Suns in round nine in what was a low-scoring affair. The Wolves now face a hungry Buccs outfit as the home side looks to bounce back with a big win at home. Hunt said the squad was raring to get over the top of the Wolves in what always promises to be a thriller. 'Joondalup games are always big games,' he said. 'They always are fun games to play in and always seem to come right down to the wire. 'We have had a rivalry with Joondalup for the last six years, so we are looking forward to playing them at home.' The Buccs sit just under the Wolves on the NBL1 West league ladder in fifth, with the visitors holding down the fourth position, making Saturday's contest one to watch. Tip-off is at 7pm on Saturday, June 7, at Activewest Stadium.

Ralph De Leon, Shuvee Etrata, Klarisse de Guzman retain top 3 spots after duo formation task

Ralph De Leon, Shuvee Etrata, and Klarisse de Guzman retained their rankings for the final duo formation task in "Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition." On Wednesday's episode, the housemates began the challenge: they must memorize the order of the poles at the first station, arrange them in the second station, and balance them to reach the third station. The rankings that they decided earlier gave them a 20-second advantage over the next person. Meanwhile, the four housemates who won the Big Intensity Challenge (Ralph, Shuvee, Esnyr, and AZ Martinez) has the power to freeze the housemates for one minute. Ralph, Shuvee, and Klarisse were the first three to start the task and also the first three to finish, using their advantage to the fullest. Esnyr used his power to freeze, but Ralph was still able to complete the task ahead of everyone. A shakeup happened in the next three housemates to complete the task: Dustin Yu, originally ranked 10th, jumped to fourth place. He was followed by Will Ashley, the original fourth ranked, who slid down to fifth. Mika Salamanca, the original sixth, also retained her rank to complete the top half of the rankings. The results of the remaining housemates have yet to be revealed. "Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition" airs weeknights on GMA Network at 10:05 p.m. and weekends at 6:15 pm. —MGP, GMA Integrated News
