Demolition justice in Jalandhar village where anti-drug activist was murdered 2 years ago

Punjab Police's bulldozer justice against people involved in the drug trade on Sunday reached a village in Jalandhar district where an anti-drug campaigner was killed two years ago — an indication of the village's notoriety. Jalandhar commissioner of police Dhanpreet Kaur said Lakhanpal village had long been infamous for rampant drug sale and supply. "It had been under close surveillance," she said. "A joint team from the panchayat department and police razed unauthorized structures built on govt land by known drug peddlers," she added. The commissioner also said police removed a structure which was helping peddlers escape police action during raids. The commissioner said the structure had been built on rooftops to escape the police. "By removing these illegal structures, we curtailed their escape routes. We intend to intensify our raids further and clean the village of its bad name once and for all," she asserted. A prominent anti-drug campaigner, Lakhanpal village numberdar Ram Gopal, was murdered by peddlers in the village on the night of Jan 28, 2023. The commissioner of police said the said the primary accused who encroached on govt land, Hardeep Singh alias Deepa, had nine cases registered against him, including seven under NDPS Act. His father, Sarbjit Singh, and brother Sandeep alias Sonu also faced two criminal cases each. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! In addition to the arrests, police identified two properties for freezing under the NDPS Act. After Ram Gopal's murder, his son Vansh and other villagers alleged that he had caught several drug addicts who would come to the village and recorded their videos in which they named the peddlers from whom they were getting the supplies. "He was regularly supplying information to the police about drug peddling. Nakas by villagers blocked drug addicts from entering the village and squeezed the business of peddlers. In desperation, they murdered him after repeatedly threatening him," Vansh had alleged at the time. Six accused, all from the same village, including the former sarpanch of the village who was the husband of the then sarpanch, were named in the FIR. During a protest in the village, blocking the Phagwara-Nakodar road on January 29, 2023, villagers alleged that the deceased repeatedly said in his speeches and in the presence of police officials that he was receiving threats from the accused. He was the most vocal among the villagers in naming the peddlers.
