Five killed as tree falls on bus in Barabanki

1 2 Lucknow: Five people, including two assistant development officers and a schoolteacher, were killed when a massive tree fell on a UP roadways bus near Rajabazar area of Barabanki on Friday, police said. The incident occurred at 10.40 am while the bus was en route from the district headquarters to Haidargarh with 60 passengers to officials, it took nearly one-and-a-half hours of intensive efforts to remove the heavy branches and retrieve the victims and rescue one injured woman. In a poignant scene, the injured woman, Rama Devi , trapped between seats could be heard pleading with bystanders. "This is a matter of life and death… instead of making videos, help us remove the branches so we can get out," she implored. Locals later scolded the person and joined the rescue effort, helping pull her out to safety. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each victim's family while the transport department provided an immediate relief of Rs 50,000 per family, with an additional Rs 7 lakh to be given from the Passenger Security Fund. Barabanki DM Shashank Tripathi, along with administrative, forest, and police officials, personally oversaw the relief operation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wild Vintage Photos Undo The deceased were identified as driver Santosh (40) of Shukulbazar, Amethi; ADO (women welfare) Meena Srivastava (45); ADO (statistics) Juhi Saxena (28) both of Harkh block; teacher Shiksha Mehrotra (53) of Junior High School, Kadipur; and passenger Rakeebul Nisha (50), who was returning from a visit to Haji Waris Ali Shah's shrine in Deva. Barabanki additional superintendent of police Vikas Tripathi said, "The tree fell suddenly crushing those seated in the front rows. Some passengers clawed their way out through broken windows even as rainwater poured into the vehicle. Rescue teams rushed to the site promptly and removed the massive trunk and freed those trapped inside using chainsaws and hydraulic cutters." Police said all injured passengers were shifted to nearby hospitals while the bodies were sent for postmortem. Traffic on Haidargarh Road remained disrupted for about 90 minutes. Following the tragedy, authorities pruned overhanging branches of trees along the route to prevent further accidents. A narrow escape Ehsan Abbas of Askari Hall thanked God for providential escape. He said he had given up his front seat for a group of women and moved to the back just 10 minutes before the accident. Following the accident, he attempted to open the emergency exit but was unsuccessful. He then broke the side windows and helped children escape before getting out himself. HYDERABAD: Association of Lady Entrepreneurs (ALEAP) President Rama Devi Kanneganti has been shortlisted for the prestigious United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize 2025. According to a press release issued on Thursday, this recognition has been given in appreciation of her commitment to empowering women through entrepreneurship. Under Rama Devi's leadership, ALEAP has grown to over 10,000 members and made significant strides in building an entrepreneurial ecosystem for women in India. Though the award is given to only a man and a woman globally every five years, being shortlisted among 330 nominees worldwide is a moment of great pride and global acknowledgement for ALEAP's impactful journey, the statement said.
