Tata Motors begins delivery of 148 EVs to BMTC

Bengaluru: Tata Motors has commenced the delivery of 148 advanced Tata Starbus electric buses to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). This latest induction adds to the city's growing fleet of 921 Tata electric buses already in operation, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable urban mobility. The new buses were flagged off by Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and BMTC Managing Director Ramachandran R., IAS, alongside senior government and BMTC officials. 'These e-buses have consistently demonstrated high uptime, reliability and comfort. The new additions will help us expand our network and offer safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel options to the public,' said Ramachandran. The fleet will be operated and maintained by TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd., a Tata Motors subsidiary, under a 12-year contract. Tata Motors stated that the buses have collectively clocked over six crore kilometres across the city, reflecting strong operational efficiency. Anand S., Vice President at Tata Motors, said, 'We are proud to support BMTC's sustainability goals with on-time delivery, advanced technology, and consistent service performance. Our Starbus EVs are designed for high-performance intra-city transit and ensure a citizen-first experience.' The low-floor, 35-seater Starbus EVs feature modern electric drivetrains, electronic stability and brake distribution systems, and integrated transport connectivity tools. With zero tailpipe emissions, the electric buses are expected to further improve Bengaluru's air quality while showcasing a replicable model for green public transport in Indian cities.

BMTC to restart bus priority lane between Marathahalli and Silk Board junction in January 2026

Starting January 2026, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will resume the bus priority lane between Marathahalli and Silk Board junction, announced Ramachandran R., Managing Director, BMTC, on Thursday. The bus priority lane was originally launched in 2019 with great fanfare between K.R. Puram and the Silk Board junction. However, it was discontinued after BMRCL removed the bollards that marked the dedicated bus lane to make way for metro pillar construction. 'Due to metro construction, we had to pause the bus priority lane. We will restart it in January,' said Mr. Ramachandran. He was speaking at Enroute: Mobility-as-a-Service Challenge, organised by World Resources Institute, discussing how BMTC plans to collaborate with BMRCL to offer seamless commuting options in the city. While he confirmed the lane's reinstatement, he did not specify whether the entire stretch would be reopened. The bus priority lane had gained significant popularity among daily commuters and faced considerable backlash when it was shut down. Mr. Ramachandran also spoke about several new initiatives that BMTC is implementing, highlighting the organisation's shift toward a data-driven approach to enhance the commuting experience in the city. He said that BMTC is developing a digital transport infrastructure, introducing smart cards that will be compatible with electronic ticketing machines, along with smart Shakti cards.'We are planning to install automatic passenger counting systems along with automatic fare collection systems to enable conductorless transit in the city,' Mr. Ramachandran said. He noted that a major challenge over the next five years is managing the city's transport and traffic. 'BMTC serves over 45 lakh passengers, and BMRCL sees around 8.5 lakh commuters daily, totalling approximately 55 lakh public transport users every day. The city's total population is about 1.5 crore,' he said. Drawing a comparison with Delhi, he noted that Delhi benefits from multiple transport options, including two corporations that run a total of 10,000 buses, in addition to metro and suburban transit routes. Bengaluru, in contrast, largely depends on BMTC and BMRCL, with BMTC operating a fleet of around 6,888 buses. Mr. Ramachandran acknowledged that Bengaluru needs a larger fleet to meet the rising demand. To address these gaps, BMTC has adopted a data-driven strategy. The goal is to use data to build a digital stack for transport and integrate all modes of transport to improve the overall commuting experience, he said.

Officials told to expedite survey of SCs; Mandya lags

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation Managing Director and the in-charge Secretary of Mandya district, Ramachandran R., on Thursday told officials to expedite the comprehensive survey of Scheduled Castes being conducted by the one-man commission headed by the retired judge, Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das, and ensure that the set targets are achieved. Speaking at a progress review meeting of the survey at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mandya, he emphasised that the survey must be conducted fairly and that enumerators should behave patiently with the public. Such surveys are essential to ensure the provision of facilities and services and must be carried out with accuracy and responsibility. He instructed officials to verify whether all enumerators in the district had received proper training. For those who were absent on the scheduled training day, it should be confirmed that they have received follow-up training. Nodal officers must ensure that all enumerators are trained appropriately. It was pointed out during the meeting that compared to other taluks, the survey progress in Mandya city is lagging. Out of 11,357 Scheduled Caste households, surveys have been conducted in only 7,389, just 65.1%. The official instructed the municipal commissioner, tahsildar, and the sub-divisional officers to take special measures to complete the remaining survey within two days. Deputy Commissioner Kumar informed the meeting that Mandya district currently ranks 4th in the ongoing survey. There are 1,823 polling stations in the district, with 2,036 enumerators deployed. A total of 179 supervisors have been appointed. Dedicated WhatsApp groups have been created for enumerators, supervisors, and nodal officers, where they are instructed to upload pictures of their participation. Daily progress reports are being reviewed and discussed with officials, he told the meeting.
