FM concludes 4-day Meghalaya sojourn with visit to Sohra RKM

Sitharaman paid floral tributes at the statues of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda. The monks took the finance minister around the mission's vocational training facilities, where around 100 women are being trained in weaving free of cost. Swami Anuragananda, secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, Sohra, shared that the minister had long been familiar with the institution's work. "Being one of the oldest centres in the northeast, she was eager to learn about the history, growth and current challenges of the mission, as well as the various activities it undertakes. She expressed a keen interest in meeting the women entrepreneurs and was deeply moved by the empowerment initiatives on the campus," he said. "We also gave her an overview of our work in healthcare, education, community relief among other activities," Swami Anuragananda added. Sitharaman also inquired about the many distinguished alumni of the institution. The Ramakrishna Mission School, Sohra, has recently completed 100 years of dedicated service in the region and Sitharaman planted a sapling on the campus towards the end of her visit. Also present were former teachers and staff, including Kong Lolin Lyndem, one of the school's oldest alumni at age 90 who had served both as a student and a teacher. The school community, including students and faculty and other dignitaries, were also present.

Every part of North-east will get Central support to become developed: FM
New Delhi: The government will ensure every part of the North-eastern region gets legislative and policy support to achieve their development vision, which will contribute to India's goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said. Sitharaman said at a function in Meghalaya that every village has to contribute to achieving Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma's ambition to take the state economy to $30 billion by 2030, showed an official social media post by the minister's office/ on Sunday. Sitharaman on Sunday concluded - four-day visit to Meghalaya with a visit to Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School in Sohra, a separate official statement said. 'In order to reach the $30 billion economy for Meghalaya by 2030, we need every village to contribute to this ambition of the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma,' the minister said. That fits into the larger vision of India becoming a developed economy by 2047, the minister said at an event in the state addressing women's self-help groups. The minister also said that each state, with its own development vision will contribute to India's development journey. Sitharaman said the Union government will ensure that every part of the North-east gets 'legislative and policy support, which is required,' so that the region can move ahead in achieving its aspirations. 'We shall work together with the government of Meghalaya to ensure the aspirations are understood and we take that vision forward. The Prime Minister gives a great emphasis on North East,' Sitharaman said. The minister said that since 2014, a concerted push has been made to support women's collectives by improving access to credit, training, branding support, and market linkages. The minister underscored the significance of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which aims to ensure that at least five women in every village earn a sustainable income of ₹ 1 lakh annually.

FM Sitharaman interacts with students, staff of Ramakrishna Mission Ashram school in Meghalaya
New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday visited the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School in Sohra, Meghalaya, and interacted warmly with the students, teachers and staff members, highlighting the government's continued engagement with educational and livelihood initiatives in the North Eastern region. During her visit, FM Sitharaman explored various facilities at the school, including the Tailoring and Weaving Centre that operates under the Swavalamban Alternative Livelihood Unit for the East (SALUTE) initiative. She appreciated the efforts being made to provide skill-based training and alternative livelihood opportunities through such centres. The Finance Minister was accompanied by Swami Anuragananda, Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission. Together, they toured the campus and spoke to the school community, acknowledging the positive role of the institution in the region's development. One of the most touching moments of the visit was her interaction with 90-year-old Kong Lolin Lyndem, who had both studied and taught at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School. FM Sitharaman shared a few words with her, appreciating her long association and contribution to the school. Meanwhile, Meghalaya marked a significant milestone in its development journey on Friday as Union Finance Minister Sitharaman inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple key projects worth Rs 1,087.81 crore in the state. Speaking at the Integrated Public Programme held at LARITI – International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture earlier this week, FM Sitharaman praised Meghalaya's steady progress and visionary leadership under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Highlighting the Centre's support, the Finance Minister said that Meghalaya has been allocated a total of Rs 5,400 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Commending the effective use of funds, she remarked, "I am happy that the government has used the amount effectively for capital assets. I want to place on record my appreciation for Meghalaya's efforts. The funds are being fully utilised. Some states have struggled to use their entire share, but Meghalaya has made the most of its allocation."
